If it were me, I'd shoot. As long as you are comfortable giving a shot, go for it but get another test first. Let's see where the #s are going.

Here we go! could these low numbers mean his panc is healing and maybe there is a chance he can go OTJ at some point. If you look at his SS he had such high numbers at 1.5u and now he seems to be so much lower.

for today, how often should I test and at what point do you start to give HC?

It could mean that Java's pancreas is kicking in. I'm a big fan of taking each day one at a time. Numbers can fluctuate and I don't personally like the rollercoaster of becoming elated over Gabby's numbers only to see more pink. But that's me!

When you feed HC really depends on your cat and when in the cycle you see lower numbers. A 55 at +2 is different than a 55 at +7, kwim? Definitely feed the 40s with HC. If you're unsure, always ask. Also, take a look at this post on handling low numbers.

Sienne, I looked at Gabby's SS and it seems like when you are dealing with low numbers you check about once an hour. Can I start with that or should I do every half hour?

I check Gabby hourly at the beginning of the cycle because she's a notorious drama queen and likes to plummet (not drop) early. That said, it can be helpful for your peace of mind to know how Java responds. Given that this is the lowest you've shot, always get a +1 and +2. If you see a drop at +1, then you may want to test at +1.5. A lot of this process is learning about your cat. One of the truisms here is that every cat is different (ECID).

So here's the scoop... Unless Java's numbers come down and prove me wrong, there's a good chance that he dropped low over night. What you may be seeing is the beginning of a bounce. This is why it's important to get at least one spot check during the PM cycle.

I would get a +3 or +4, since you are not sure whether he is bouncing yet or not. I agree with Sienne....he likely went low overnight. The bedtime spot check would have given you an idea where this came from.

I feel so bad I didn't get a night check. I couldn't keep my eyes open and I fell asleep, it has been an exhausting week with midterms. I just feel terrible...

Great numbers today!! A string of blue numbers usually lead to Green sometime today :mrgreen:

it seems like a flat blue. Should I keep testing every hour or can I give his ears a rest?

Don't feel terrible!! For the future, maybe set an alarm if you know you can't stay up and when you see a lower number. At least so far, it looks like Java proved me wrong and is surfing beautifully. I like it when I'm proved wrong this way!!

I didn't even think about testing again when I saw the 271. I should remember the cliff-diving he did in February. The funny thing is I am mostly an insomniac and up until 1 or 2 in the morning. Figures the night I need to be up is when my body and brain say "enough". thats a good idea about the alarm
 
Ok I am getting a night shot. Cross your fingers that Java has stable numbers tomorrow, I want to go to the Capitol for the big Protest! Solidarity! On Wisconsin!
