No condo yesterday.

Tipper is consistent today --pink all pink :!:

Possible fur shot this AM

I attempted to use my new syringes, the Walmart Relion ones with the 1/2 unit marking but I could not get rid of
a huge air bubble..it was on the bottom and took up approx. .25 u of insulin.
I tossed it and went back to the BD 30 gauge 1/2 in ones (no 1/2u mark). The gauge of the Relion syringes is larger.
Is it more painful to inject?? I like the feel of the 1/2in needle so I don"t want to use the shorter one. Any suggestions for
syringes??

The scruff of Tippers neck seems to be a little tougher - Is this because of shooting in the same area all the time?

Does anyone vary the shooting sites?
My vet suggested the flank. She left message with DH and I'm not even sure where the flank is. Any pictures of this?

Thanks,
Patty

I've used Relion, Walgreens, GNP, BD...but Monoject in my opinion is far superior to all of those.
I got them from Hocks with 1/2 unit markings and i...like you...prefer the half inch needle.

binks doesnt seem to notice the gauge differences...too busy pigging out when i shoot him...

The higher the gauge, the smaller the diameter of the needle...so 31 gauge is smaller than 30 gauge. The 31 gauge does not come in long needles...too thin. I use Relion, 31 gauge short needle personally, I gave too many fur shots with the long needle, but others have had the opposite experience. I also have used the GNP brand from Hocks, they are both fine (for me). Many people have commented that BDs have inconsistent markings, so dosing may not be consistent.

For bubbles, maybe Ella will post her instructions...but in the meantime, here's my version. Remove the cap from the plunger and the needle tip, move the plunger back and forth several times (spreads the lubricant), then fully depress the plunger and keep pressure on it while you insert the needle into your insulin container. Draw more insulin than the dose (extra 0.5-1.0u), wait for the insulin to fill the syringe...the needle is small so it takes time to equalize pressure! Then remove the needle, put the insulin back in the fridge. Holding the syringe vertically with the needle up, tap or flick the syringe with your finger sharply to loosen any bubbles that are clinging to the sides or plunger...they should move to the top (close to the needle) then you can pull the plunger down slightly to allow the bubbles to all merge at the highest point. Then twist the plunger as you push on it to push the air out. Twist/push out the excess insulin the same way. (Twisting allows you to have much better control of how much the plunger moves.)

Yes, you should vary the injection site, don't shoot in the same spot all the time...it will thicken the skin. I shoot in the side of the chest. Pic for injections sites: http://www.bd.com/us/diabetes/page.aspx ... 01&id=7001

Edit: I can't get the link to post correctly. When you get on the BD site, click on Caring for a pet with diabetes on the left side of the page, then diabetes in cats, then how to inject a cat, then site selection.
