Georgia and Simon (GA)

Simon is still in the blues this morning so I am really happy. I hope this means he will stay there or even go a little lower today (do I dare to hope?). I am going to ask the vet to send me Simon's results from his bloodwork so i can post them here. I really want some advice about what the numbers mean and if there is anything on it that I should be worried about. Today he is getting his last dose of bupe but I am continuing the Pepcid because it seems to be helping. I had discontinued his ear drops -- the vet wanted to see if going back to how Simon was before taking the drops might drop his numbers back. I am going to start back on the ear drops (the non-steroid ones) probably tomorrow. Simon is good this morning -- purring, eating, and some lb action.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Re: 3/10 Simon AMPS 165

Good morning! Simon, you look great today and you made your bean so happy! Good boy!

I hope all your bloodwork comes back OK, and that taking him off the steroid ear drops helps his numbers. Paws crossed!

Re: 3/10 Simon AMPS 165

YES!!!!!!! We have BLUE!!! That is fantastic - it is so great to see these numbers coming down. Good luck with the other test results. I too have posted labs here to get feedback - as it is sometimes such a foreign language to me. Good luck to with the new drops - I hope they help Simon.

Have a great day guys!

How nice it is to see Simon coming back down and having a nice, flat blue surf!! I hope the new ear drops work and his BG numbers come down to where we are used to seeing them.

Re: 3/10 Simon AMPS 165 +5.5 164 question about test results

My vet's office faxed over all of Simon's tests but I can't figure out what it says. It looks like they sent all the tests he has had lately (urinalysis, bloodwork and fpl., although I don't know what results go with what test) I can't figure out what the numbers mean. What exactly should I be looking for on these tests? Sorry to be so vague.

Re: 3/10 Simon PMPS 177 test results + slight UTI

After getting the lab results faxed to me and not understanding anything on it, my vet called me to let me know that Simon has a slight UTI. The urine culture came back slightly elevated for beta hemolytic strep. The vet said that it is very unusual to see that in the urine with cats. Even though it is not that significant, he would like to put Simon on some antibiotics because of his risk due to diabetes. Has anyone heard of this strep before? My vet said that his number was minimally elevated at a little over 1000. Significant numbers are about 10,000 in cats (not sure what these numbers mean).

I think after looking at his results closely, the spec fPL is 2.1. Does that mean anything?

Thanks for your help and advice. I can give more detailed information on the test results if needed.

Do antibiotics cause the bg to become elevated?

Re: 3/10 Simon PMPS 177 test results + slight UTI

what is the range given on the fPLI?

ECID....Simon may react to having high BG with the abs or not...but if he does...don't fret over it..i know easier said than done...you need the UTI to clear before you can worry about the BGs...if that makes sense....

UTI trumps diabetes as you have insulin to work with...but you really don't want the UTI getting out of hand....so the sooner you start him on abs the better...my opinion...hope others can chime in

Re: 3/10 Simon PMPS 177 test results + slight UTI

From what it looks like, if the fPL is less than 3.5, it is normal and not likely pancreatitis. Is that right? Simon's number was 2.1.

Re: 3/10 Simon PMPS 177 test results + slight UTI

No clue on the UTI either. I've never looked that one up before or dealt with it.

I'm so glad Simon is back into blues. What a relief that must be. Why is antibiotics bad with FD?

Re: 3/10 Simon PMPS 177 test results + slight UTI

A value below 3.5 on a spec fPLI is below threshold for diagnosing pancreatitis -- in other words, Simon's in the normal range.

I would suggest posting about the strep and the vet's suggestion on the Health board. I know Dr. Lisa has posted about the unnecessary use of antibiotics. From what the vet told you, I haven't a clue if the culture is considered positive or negative. Maybe one of the vet techs on Health can help out.

Best of luck with getting it all straightened out, Georgia. In the meantime, nice numbers for Simon!!

Kazi's numbers always seem to be BETTER on antibiotics. We always just struggle with finding something that agrees with her - she tends to quit eating on me when she is on abs.
