Recap of yesterday's BGs:

AMPS - 392, gave 0.10 units Lantus (15th cycle)
+3 - 352
+6 - 297
+9 - 281
PMPS - 283, gave 0.10 units Lantus (16th cycle)
+2 - 369

This morning's AMPS was 327 and I upped Cini's Lantus dose to 0.20 units. So far so good with a +3 of 269 :-D

Cini is doing a little better today with the leg issue, not too sore but still can't do cat yoga yet :lol:

I spoke to the Vet and she agreed the Metacam injection was a one time only thing. She'd like to put Cini on some Buprenex (I think I'm spelling that correctly?) for the next few weeks until the Cosequin builds up in his system (I'm going to start that today).

What's the consensus on Buprenex for short term use?

I know others have experience with it, but I don't. We use gabapentin. Good luck with the new dose. He's liking it!

Cathy, I use bupe on an *as needed* basis, for Checkers' spinal problem. It works very well for occasional pain.


In my case it is supplied in *one dose* syringes, and needs to be applied directly to the gums, or second choice, under tongue.


Checks is quiet for a few hours, but not lethargic. I like that he isn't immediately "drugged", therefore jumping and playing and not resting the painful area.
Next day, he feels great and is playful again.

I have not yet talked to the doc about longer term meds, because he doesn't seem to be in pain constantly, just occasionally, so far.

I repeat, this is what works for Checkers occasional back pain.

punkin had a week of bupe around 10/1 and we just started it on him again day before yesterday.

couple of things - don't know if you saw punkin plummeting yesterday - but that happened last time i started him on bupe as well. pain can drive up numbers and pain relief can bring them down. so be prepared. i knew it was a possibility, but the first dose didn't cause any change - the second dose nearly had me desperate, in tears and worried for his life.

so . . . you've got advance warning.

our intent is to keep using it long-term but it was pointed out to me that it is a narcotic, addictive (think withdrawal) and possibly something that builds up a tolerance.

i wouldn't worry about using it for a few days in your situation, but i would hesitate to use it for too long.

it works pretty well and there are few painkillers for cats. it doesn't taste bad, it's easy to give it to them.

we use the cosequin and have been very happy with it. the other thing i've done for arthritis is to have acupuncture and give him chinese herbs Di Gu Pi from the vet acupuncturist. i can definitely tell the acupuncture helps. it made a difference by the second visit. now he's going every 2 weeks for a while. our person is a vet who has become trained, licensed and certified as an acupuncturist as well. i would choose carefully. our vet recommended this person and he practices one day a week in their veterinary clinic. our vet takes her own cats to him as well. i think that's a great option for mobility improvement and pain related to the arthritis. no side effects to worry about, either.

I, too, use Bupe on an as-needed basis for Mookie if his pancreatitis flares up. It's an opioid so it's excellent for pain management. I always have some pre-filled oral syringes on hand that I buy from our vet. The effect on Mookie is that it reduces the pain and makes him sleepy, so he usually naps for 2-3 hours. After that his appetite is back and he wants to eat. He's not had any side effects that I've noticed, like nausea.

I also used it to manage Henry's pain post surgery when he had a pin put in his leg. He was on a higher dose because his pain was intense, and the dose was gradually reduced as he recovered. We couldn't have gotten though that ordeal without it. Now Henry gets Cosequin for the occasional stiffness in that leg.

i should add that with the acupuncture, punkin started jumping up on tables again - something i hadn't seen in a couple of years.

Bupe, while a narcotic, is pretty safe. It can be given as an oral med (it goes in the cheek pouch or under the tongue) or as an subcutaneous injection (like insulin). Lots of us have used it for post-dental pain management.

We are ones who have used it long- term for chronic pain mgmt in Gussie who has severe arthritis. He gets a low maintenance dose bid and it seems to keep him comfortable but alert....he sleeps but not more than any oth er cat..so about 22 hours a day :lol: :lol: just kiddingnonthe 22 hours. We also tried tramadol a d gabapentin first. The tramadol made him hyper and the gab just didn't work.

Bupe is great, but some cats may get 'loopy' on it.

Shadoe had a long history of pancreatitis and abdomen pains; bupe was very good for her. It helped her relax, and eased her touchy tender sides.

Oliver, while he's a very big boy, was quite 'loopy', like a drunken sailor, on even the tiniest amount of bupe. I don't know why but it was just too strong for him. Oh sure, it got rid of his pains, but he looked like he had a silly grin on his face, glassy eyes, and tongue lolling out the side of his mouth.... the boy was feeling no pain whatsoever!

He was fine on Tramadol daily, but you can't give bupe with it, and there were lots of other drug interactions.

I started both on daily gabapentin, orally, for their chronic pains, and if Shadoe had the odd flair, I could still give her some bupe as needed.

When you give a pain med, you may well see BG dropping because the pain and stress of the pain has been treated with the bupe.

OK, I have the Bupe now and the directions say to give 0.10ml every 12 hours as needed for pain.

The syringe the Vet gave me is a tuberculin syringe and 0.10mls looks like a lot! I'm sure it's because I'm so used to an insulin syringe.

Does 0.10ml seem right? Is that what you guys give your cats?

punkin gets .2ml on it - so .1 is probably fine. punkin weighs about 12-13 lbs right now.

i squirt it a bit at a time under his lips, along the gums. it needs to be absorbed by the mucous membranes, not swallowed. you can also get it under the tongue (let me know how that goes, hahahahaha) according to my vet.

Gus weighs 9.5 lbs now and gets .1 ml q 12 hours. Bupe has a pretty good allowable variation. For I,nstance, Gus can get up to .25ml q 12 hours and still be safe.

Just be sure you are looking at .1 ml and not 1 ml. I use the small syringes and it's not that much.

I gave Cini the 0.10ml and I think I got it in his cheek pouch. He kinda jerked when I squirted it in so I may have gotten some directly in his mouth. nailbite_smile
