2nd day in the 300s / What to Do?

Hello-

I just got another high number (355) for Maxi's glucose level. Yesterday he was in the 300s all day, actually had 2 readings in the 400s.

So if Maxi's numbers are still in the 300s through today and tomorrow morning, pre-shot, should I increase his insulin tomorrow morning? By how much?

I'm being driven crazy by not being able to see exactly how much insulin I'm giving him because of the dumb syringes. I've gotten 3 kinds of syringes; I was told each time they were right (1/2 unit marked), but they weren't. I'm waiting for some that I ordered online to arrive. But I worry that because of the minuscule amounts, I still won't be able to be sure.
Also, it looks like there's air in the syringe no matter how much I try to tap it out.
Insights/ advice?

Thank you

Until the proper syringes arrive one thing you can try is to draw a colored liquid (weak tea works) into a syringe in the amount of your current 0.5u dose and keep that syringe to use as a guide. It doesn’t matter so much if your guide is not exactly 0.5u - it’s your 0.5u. Consistency matters more.

Which dosing method are you following- SLGS or TR?

Here is the link to yesterday's post: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/urgent-question.225137/ We start each new post with a link to the previous post, so we can see what happened previously.

As you said in that post yesterday, you said you thought you did a fur shot in the morning. Any fur shot or reduced dose is going to deplete the Lantus depot, which is going to raise the numbers. It may take as long as six cycles, so it's time for patience.

Do you have a Walmart near you? Their Relion syringes have half unit markings. If not, the sample syringe Sandy mentioned is a good technique.

One favour to ask, could you put "SLGS" in your signature, so we can stop asking which dosing method you are following. There are enough kitties here that it's hard to keep track of what method each person is using. Thank you!

I wasn't sure if I gave a fur shot or not. I thought it was possible because he moved and later his numbers were so high. There wasn't any insulin in his fur as far as I could tell; it would be hard to tell with just the drop that 0.5 is. However, subsequently people told me insulin has a distinctive smell, and this leads me to believe it was not a fur shot because I didn't smell anything, and that's why I'm so worried that this 0.5 unit is just wasting time. Alas, I will remain patient. But I could use more reassurance that it's ok for him to go day after day with such high numbers.

Don't you need a prescription to get syringes? By the time I get another prescription from the vet, the ones I've ordered will arrive. At least I HOPE so.

SLGS has been added.

Thank you.
