Good Morning, Lantus Land!

First off, here's the link to yesterday's condo, the early blue numbers of which are stress-related due to a run-in with a neighbour's tomcat and a minor laceration that Karre sustained, and the later purrfect green numbers of which speak of the high degree to which His Majesty's pancreas must have healed: Karre's 28th July Condo

And the overview:
28th July AMPS 6.2/112 --- Shot 0.1u --- Stress spike due to altercation with "foreign" cat.
(+2) 7.9/142
(+2.5) 7.8/140
(+3) 7.3/131 --- Yay, Mr. P showed up.
(+4) 6.3/113 --- And pitched in purrfectly.
(+6) 4.4/79 --- Love it.
(+10) 4.5/81
(+11) 4.5/81
PMPS 5.3/95 --- Shot 0.1u

29th July AMPS 4.6/83 --- Shot 0.1u

I got to thinking about feline first aid yesterday. Irrigating the wound with sterile saline solution seems to have benefited Karre in that it rinsed out any dirt etc., but I kept thinking that if it was *me* who had sustained a cut, in order to stave off any infection I would have irrigated with sterile saline *and* cleaned the wound with an alcohol wipe or swabbed it with alcohol. After BG tests, we wipe the test spot on Karre's ear with alcohol swabs of course. But that puncture is so minute that any sting caused by the alcohol has never once elicited any sort of reaction from Karre. Had alcohol in any form come in contact with the small laceration on his flank, though, it would probably have stung quite a bit, even with a 10% alcohol & sterile saline solution, which is what I would have considered using on Karre, had I had any data or experience to know it was safe and acceptable. Have any of you had experience in treating minor cuts/scratches in your own cats?

WCR couldn't be better. The small laceration on Karre's left flank is healing well, there is no wetness, no bleeding, no smell, and no residual tenderness or sensitivity to touch. He's had a spot of breakfast, but I've noticed - thanks for making me pay attention, Camille! - that he normally likes to come and eat when he most likely feels the Lantus nudge him towards nadir (from about +1 to +3, usually). He likes to nap from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, so about 3 out of 4 days he won't pay a visit to the kitty buffet during those hours, but rather has his snackus after sleepus (ca. around +9). His appetite is perfect. Outside of nap-time, he is active and alert and becomes very playful when we go for catwalks through the garden. All 5 Ps present.

We'd like to see a couple of all-green cycles before revisiting the topic of You-Know-Where, just for good measure. Maybe His Majesty will oblige today

Happy cycling, everyone! Enjoy your Sunday!
Jane

Hi Jane,

I was doing one last update before shutting down for the night, It's still Saturday in my mind. but saw your post and wanted to reply first. My GA ex-feral Midnight was always getting in fights so yes, I have quite a bit of experience in patching him up. In fact he had some nasty abscesses when I took him in. I always cleaned him well with a mild soap & hot water, then use a flush like the vets use for surgery if the skin was broken. I would mix water with hydrogen peroxide and pour some of that over it to make sure I got all the germs and finish it off with some neosporin unless it was too big for it because neo isn't an internal med. I've seen too many abscesses from cat scratches and bites to not want to err on the side of caution with injuries. Poor Karre. The last thing she needs is an infection! I'm glad she recovered so nicely. I'd keep an eye on it for a few days to make sure nothing develops.

The best flush is Chlorohexiderm but lately it's hard to find. I had to buy a new one last time that did a good job but was expensive & may have screwed up Racci's PH or enzymes. It gave her gray ketones on the ketostix! I had to take her to the vet and it had us both stumped but after researching the gray reading, the vet found that it could be caused by messed up ph, etc. Strange, huh?

Have a good one. I'm calling it a night.

Melanie & Racci

Thanks very much for all that info, Melanie, that's really helpful. I didn't know one could even use hydrogen peroxide to treat cats. I suppose a 10% alcohol & sterile saline solution would have been alright then. Still, even though we didn't use anything other than saline to clean the laceration yesterday, it looks great today. It's closing up nicely. We'll definitely keep a very close eye on it for the next few days, to be sure. What a brave boy our Emperor is!

And what a green one, too:

Setting up for a very pleasing cycle again

Morning Jane,I'm up checking Maggie, too, and caught your condo. Very educational condo here with first aid on lacerations. I have no experience with lacerations, but I remember a stray kitty that I was trying to rescue some time ago had a limp all of a sudden. I took her to the Vet, and after shaving her leg, the Vet saw a laceration that had gotten infected. It took some time for it to clear up as I remember, and I had to keep the kitty indoors for 10 days and take care of the wound. It wasn't visible to the naked eye, so that was a gut feeling with the Vet to have her leg. With you doing the first aid, sounds like Karre is very lucky and recovered nicely. Great recovery with her numbers, too. Have a great day.

Morning, Ann! Thanks for stopping in  We just came back from a catwalk in the sunshine! Very fitting for a Sunday
Here are some photos from our little excursion, and the relaxing, sunshiney morning we've had so far:

HIS (yes, that's HIS - Karre is a TOMCAT, remember, guys?) Majesty Karre the Emperor! You can see a bit of his nekkid tummy from when they shaved it last time for the cystocentesis. Still, isn't he just so very very handsome! Lounging on the sun-drenched lawn. His favourite Sunday morning pastime - which also serves to demonstrate his favourite BG colour

King Henry, Deep In Thought

Always love the pictures, Jane. The one of the kittys lounging, makes me want to go btb. They look so cool, and happy.

Hope His Majesty has an all green day.

I'm glad to hear Karre's wound is healing nicely. Nice greens this morning. He looks so content in the picture where he is laying in the grass. Henry is a beautiful kitty too. I love the white streak down his nose.

Well, that was quite a catwalk! Our second one of the day. Everyone was happy to saunter slowly along the northern slope towards the upper lawn. Arriving there, a little break was taken, a few flowers were carefully sniffed, a couple of pounces were planned bwtween Luca and Maggie, and extended into chases across the grass... Until suddenly, Karre decided he could pounce and chase with the best of them, ducked down, and raced towards Maggie, chasing her at full speed all the way back down the slope and into the herb garden! And quite a turn of speed he had, too, our Emperor! I haven't seen him run like that in a very, very long time! So if there had been any doubt that Karre is feeling fighting fit - well, there isn't anymore

And on that note, the Midday Update, complete with extra-green numbers to commemorate the moment of green garden glory:
29th July AMPS 4.6/83 --- Shot 0.1u
(+3) 4.9/88
(+6) 4.5/81

We're thinking, barring any further incident or reason to re-think, it might be nice to try His Majesty's second *anitjinxantijinx* You-Know-Where Trial on Wednesday - a new trial for a new month, as it were. He seems ready. If he keeps gradually dropping his BG average from the 90s to the 80s and so on, the way he has been (excepting yesterday's blues), I think there can be no doubt that he's good to go with the trial... This is *verra* exciting

Hope everyone's having a great Sunday! DH Jack is in dire need of carbonara fusilli and a tomato, rocket and cipollini salad, so I am off to earn the positive version of my acronym (Darling, rather than Darn, Wife :-D).
Back for condo rounds afterwards!

Jane

P.S. Thanks for visiting, Carla and Dyana! His Majesty is very pleased to see you ladies stopping by his condo! And no worries, Ann - Karre doesn't mind at all, he has a thing for charming ladies such a yourself who take an interest in him, and so he graciously overlooks little faux-pas like that :-D

Oh Jane, I'm so sorry for referring to Karre in my post as "her"! I know Karre is a Tomcat, but I have a bad habit of mixing up the gender in my typing when I know better. Please apologize to Karre for me! :-D Karre is gorgeous; I would like to say beautiful, too! Love all the pics of your kitties!

WEll look at the Majesty!
He truely is!!
I am so glad to see that his numbers are back down to his normal range!
and that his laceration is healing nicely
Wishing you guys a wonderful day with wonderful numbers!

Great photos of your crew and wonderful description of Karre reclaiming some 'catitude.'

I think Wed. sounds like a good day for a you know what. Only two of those stress-related blues were outside of a normal range.

BTW, I think I remember someone on Health noting that peroxide can breakdown skin tissue. It might we worth checking with your vet for what the best products to use are if this should happen again.

Hi Jane,

I'm glad the info helped. I'm sure your solution did a similar job of cleaning Karre's wound too but I never used alcohol. I have used saline though. The reason I like peroxide is for the bubbling. It makes me feel good. I feel like the bubbles are helping to clean it and when they stop it's clean. Probably mind over matter. What I do is keep a pre-mixed cat bottle with the cat supplies so it's ready when I need it. It usually takes a couple-3 or 4 days for the infection to set in if it will so I'm sure he'll be fine as long as you keep an eye on it and clean it every day.

Sorry I referred to Karre as a female! Shame on me! He looks exactly like my Midnight! Midnight was huge (17 lbs. when he was thin)! He was very tall and big boned. His head was twice the size almost of Racci and Calli's. Is Karre big too? He's so handsome! Your other kits are beautiful also. I love your photos.

Melanie & Racci

What a beautiful group of kitties! They are so well cared for. Jane you must be proud of them!
Karre with that lovely green again & again. Yes, we all hear you!

Thank you all, ladies, Michelle, Denise, Sienne, Melanie and Helen! Again and again I realize how invaluable it is to have so many people giving input and feedback, and a diverse range of perspectives to temper my own with. I'm truly grateful!

We got a (+9) for a change:

Still looking suave.

We did some condo rounds with extras today, since it's Sunday, a thought we'd spread around some rainbow vines  We tried to get to as many as we could - those we missed, we'll try to get next Sunday!
Jane

Morning from Texas, and thank you for visiting our condo this morning, as well as thank you for the lovely rainbow. :) Karre's looking good this morning! Hoping for a lovely surf in the  s 24/7 for you both soon. Have a good day! :-D

You're very welcome, Angela.

I'm pleased that I could make a few LL folks smile by posting rainbows. Rainbows are very close to my heart. Two years and nine months ago today, my father died. I shall never recover. But whenever I've felt really awful and hopeless, a rainbow showed up. I can't help but think it was him who painted them across the sky. And I know he would be so very happy that I'm posting rainbows to make others smile.

My heart goes out to all those among you who have gone through devastating losses, whether it was years ago or recently, whether it was a human person or an animal person you lost. A board like this one is a true testament to the enduring power of not only the human spirit, but also the feline one, and I'm sure that of all the other creatures we get to love. I am forever grateful to have found this place. It has given me more than I could ever say, and friendships that will last a lifetime. Thank you all.

We will be back for PMPS.
Jane

Jane, thank you so much for posting the beautiful rainbow in our condos. I lost my father almost 10 years ago, and I think of him whenever I see something as beautiful as a rainbow or a butterfly, or a gorgeous sunset. Somehow it does make me feel closer to him.

I'm glad Emperor Karre is better after his nasty spat. I have used saline solution and hydrogen peroxide before to treat wounds.

And thanks for posting all your kitty pictures. All your kitties are beautiful!

LOve the Pix of your beautiful family- Love rainbows --My DA passed 2 months ago & I have seen 2 butterflies everyday fluttering around our windows...Not always the same ones, but always 2--for my DA & her best sister, my DM who are together again..All these signs do mean something..We should be thankful for them-
Hope the you-know what will be successful (antijinx) and the Emperor can go back to he Falls
Hugs & love from us!

I'm sorry to hear of your recent loss, ((Roni)). And yours too, ((Georgia)). In fact I'm sorry for all the losses and difficult times many of us here on LL and overall on FDMB and beyond have had to go through and face. My heart and prayers go out to all. I love the image of the the two butterflies. I agree, Roni - we should be thankful for any signs that the ones we love(d) are happy wherever they are, and we should be grateful for all the wonderful things our lives are filled with, in spite of everything. I am, too, I truly am grateful, especially for all the kindness and support to be found right here. Thank you, and thank you all.

Jane

P.S. I almost forgot the overview:

Hi Jane,
What great pics of Karre, Henry and the rest of the kitty crew! Karre is looking terrific.
With regard to wound care: We (humans) are told in first-aid classes to use only soap and water to clean a wound. After cleaning, a wound should be irrigated with clean, plain water (no alcohol, iodine, hydrogen peroxide, etc.; these should only be used to clean around the wound, but not on the wound itself, because these "agents" may harm tissue and delay healing).

Thanks for the beautiful pic of the rainbow shot from your home. You live in a lovely place.

Good luck with "you know what" (anti-jinx)

Ella & Rusty

Glad to hear Karre is doing so well and obviously feeling spry! :-D Hoping for great things with the Wednesday 'you know what.'

My aunt ALWAYS called Hershey a "she." We believe she got confused because of "her" and "she." But, she was in her 80's, so we made allowances. ;-)

Have a great night ... or, I guess it's day for you...

Libby (& Hershey, too!)
