Cartridges are supposed to be good for 28 days at room temperature. They should last at least that long. We've had numerous people leave insulin out overnight accidentally with no problem. It could be good even longer.

So the current cartridge is okay, but all of the others will have to be thrown away after 28 days, then. Sigh.

Fridges fail; there can be electrical outages, etc. Is there a way to safeguard insulin in those circumstances? Does anyone use special cases, etc. to make sure it stays okay?

I wouldn't assume they are bad. Like I said, lots of people have left pens/vials out overnight with no issue. I've had power outages with insulin. Just made sure the door wasn't opened much until the power came back on. Insulin was fine. I've also travelled with insulin in the car for 11 hours (outdoor temps around 35C!) and the insulin in an insulated container with gel packs near by.
 
That has happened to me (leaving fridge door open) with like 15 pens in it :banghead:, but insulin seems fine. I think accidentally freezing the insulin (lower back wall of fridge can do this if setting is too low) is much worse and this also happened to me in that same small fridge with the 15 pens :mad:
 
I think it will probably be fine too, if you consider how they are shipped around and not usually temp controlled and everything is fine, like others have said, I think freezing is a bigger concern. And 50 degrees F isn't that warm either.

I just peeped at Girlie's SS!!!! :woot: I'm not even going to comment, lest she reads this... :cat::cat::cat:

The Frio is not intended as a substitute for refrigeration. It's use is for the current pen(s), and it will keep the insulin cool enough (about 68 degrees F.) for it to last 28 days, even in extreme heat.

I've no doubt that finding all of your insulin pens in the open 'fridge at 50 degrees F. is not a problem. The insulin will be fine. You can keep them (the open pen and all the unopened pens) until you use all the insulin. Don't worry. The 28-day thing is intended for humans, so that they can carry their pen around without refrigeration. Most humans have substantial doses, so they probably go through a Lantus pen in 28 days. Here at FDMB we keep our pens in the 'fridge all the time and there is no "day" limit. Most of our kitties have much smaller doses and it would be terrible to have to throw out a pen after 28 days!

Girlie's leaking again, poor thing. Honest to goodness, I think it's the Miralax. @Marje and Gracie said to use the AVJ and the Miralax, so I need to find a substitute that will do the same as the Miralax, I think. We use fresh pumpkin. Any ideas? I think she had Lactulose originally, but we went with Miralax as it was so awful getting the Lactulose into her - plus it's sugary.

I'll think about this tomorrow...
 
I think you were giving her Miralax before because I have never used it so wouldn’t recommend you use something I am not familiar with. I just meant you shouldn’t have to stop it to use the AVJ as they do two separate things. The AVJ is to soothe the intestinal system and the Miralax helps with constipation. I’m not sure what is causing her leaking. Poor sweetie.

And I also won’t say anything about the SS other than anti jinx!

I know re the SS - ANTI JINX!! And here I was focused on job applications and - even though I did get a fair bit of testing in - I certainly wasn't concerned about food and gave her even 20 and 22% carbs because I needed to sleep. And yet she's stayed in relatively good numbers even with those high carbs. It makes me think that she might want a reduction if I start giving her LC food.

Poor thing: her tummy must be so upset. She's licking her lips and doesn't really want to eat again. I got the SEB today, so I can try that, finally, and see if it helps. The vet gave me Omeprazole (Losec): just not sure if I should be giving Cerenia and Odansetron and Omeprazole and SEB... Is there any way that Ondansetron could cause LPB (leaky poo butt as I fondly thing of it...)? I have to check my notes and the SS to see if I can see any causal connections.

I'm wondering re: the constipation that has now become LPB... can senior cats lose control of their sphincter (is that the right word?) as they get older? I'm wondering whether this requires a vet visit or whether I should try to eliminate possible causes: foods or meds (Miralax and Cisapride). It's a mystery to me how she can be constipated and still have LPB... :rolleyes:

She's going to have to start wearing something like this (but on the other end) in bed soon! Poor baby girl... Actually, I'm the one who needs the raincoat (or the complete body bubble wrap) for protection... :eek:

Hope Girlie's tummy and behind settle down soon! Don't tell her I said it, but she looks good in blue... Glad the job application process is almost done.

I just feel too many anti acids as given to pets and humans. It is ok for a sporadic episode but anti acids don’t just get rid of excess acid....they get rid of all of it and we and cats need acid to digest food. The SEB is often pretty good for acid tummy and I gave it to my CKD cats.

I’ve read that cats that are constipated, and maybe have a little bit of poo that isn’t moving, can have leakage around the poo. That would take an X-ray to know if that’s happening. I do know constipated cats can be very nauseous. I don’t know about losing sphincter control. I’m sure it’s a possibility in very old cats but I don’t know.

Have you looked at the website in feline constipation (my hyperlink isn’t working again...www.felineconstipation.org). I would be careful about throwing too much at her at once medication wise.

Flatmate left fridge door partially open all night (!*^*#! :mad:), so fridge temp was 50 degrees Farenheit this morning. I have the current cartridge of Levemir, four new cartridges, and 1 new cartridge of Lantus. Are they ruined, do you think?

Left a BIG NOTE ON THE FRIDGE FOR BAD FLATMATE! Not happy....:arghh:

It's happened to me, and There were no consequences. At any rate, 50F seems cold enough. However, your flatmate has earned 7 lashes with a semi limp noodle!
