Sam is going for his teeth extractions in just a few minutes. His breakfast is now four hours late, and I'm guessing from his +3, that he's anxious about the change in routine since I'm withholding food and have hidden all of his favorite plants. Poor baby. I pray everything goes smoothly and he feels much better once it's all over!

I wish that a dental could be done on a kitty like a human dental. I have always been concerned when any of my kitty's have teeth pulled, or even just a dental.

Before you know it he will be back home, ready for some soft food.

Thank you so much, Teresa! I agree, I wish there was some way to do this without a general anesthesia. Although I don't imagine cats would handle that stress any better! How long did it take your kitty to be back to normal after having a tooth pulled?

Sending good dental vines.

Thank you, Carla!

The vet called that Sam isn't eating and his BG is up to 360 (AT2). He said I could pick him up at 3:30 (4:00 is normal pick-up time) so that I can have him home in time for his PM shot. My question is what to do if he still isn't eating? Do I shoot anyway and assume that he'll feel better once his BG is a little lower and he's been home a couple of hours? I can't imagine not shooting when he's that high. AT2 reads much higher than a human meter at those numbers, but he's still way too high for his usual numbers. Help?

If he's not eating, it may be best to skip. The anesthesia could be affecting his eating. He may not feel like eating much tonight. You don't want to risk his numbers dropping and then he won't eat. His numbers will come back down. Safety first.

If you have any meat only baby food that may tempt him to eat.

There was a discussion in the think tank re: the perils of "no food, no insulin" guidance. The suggestion was some insulin is better than none. If in doubt give 1/2 the routine dose. My suggestion for you is to bring Sam home and re-post based on what you are seeing in terms of behavior, BG, and extent of dental work and any pain meds. If you need more eyes on this for guidance, suggest you add the question mark to get attention.

Don't worry that he's not eating immediately - I have never seen a cat eat immediately after a dental - should take at last a few hours based on my experience. I hope Sam is feeling better soon!

You might check with vet to see if they have the special food that is easy to force feed (jic). From my notes these are two...

Royal Canin Recovery RS-7% carb
Iams Maxcal-9% carb

If you do, don't forget to get the feeding syringe too (don't ask how I know this :joyful:)

Some cats won't eat at the vets. Take his BG and offer a tsp of food to see what he does, then post here.

Some cats have a big BG drop shortly after arriving home from the vet. It is good that you will have a bit of time before the PM decision.

I have not had any teeth pulled on a diabetic cat, each of my cats were different. It really depends on how many teeth and where they are located. Sure, hope things will go good at home.

Okay, we are home. He is loopy and he keeps putting his face in my hands like he wants to let me know there's something wrong with his mouth. Poor baby.

First thing he did was jump in the litter box and let loose a flood that he'd probably been holding all day (plus the elevated BG). Then he dug right in and started eating. He didn't even care about getting his test because he was so busy eating through the whole process. I always add extra water to the food, but added a bit more tonight to help him stay hydrated (they hydrated him at the vet too). It feels weird to test and shoot without there being treats involved, but vet said nothing dry for 5-7 days. Oh, his BG was 275 on the human meter, so I'm thinking the 1.0u like last night, with maybe a drop less since that dropped him pretty fast and he's a little weak right now. What do y'all think?

Glad he's eating. Is it preshot time? Could you stall 20-30 minutes and test again to see if he's dropping. Even with food. Some anesthesia induction drugs drop the BG, and the effect could go on tonight.

I'm glad he's home in one piece, Djamila. I can't imagine your little Tasmanian Devil cat putting his face in your hands for comfort. :bighug::)

Thanks for your help! Fingers crossed it's more of a gentle slide than a high dive!
So glad he is home and eating, know you are glad too. Did he have teeth pulled or teeth cleaned. Buddy, has been doing another dive today, but he does this a lot.

He had two teeth pulled, and the x-ray showed that the rest of the teeth are all good (at least for now). Sam just fell asleep with his chin on his food dish. He was sooo hungry when he got home!

I'm sorry to hear that Buddy's been diving today! Looks like Kris is giving you some good advice over on your Prozinc thread. Hope he settles down for you tonight!

He's diving pretty fast so far. I knew his prozinc patterns so well. It's really scary being on a new insulin and not being confident about what comes next. On prozinc he would flatten out now and be fine for the rest of the cycle. Here on Lantus, I just don't know...:nailbiting: Thankfully all the drugs are making him tolerate testing pretty well tonight.

I like to give a snack at +2 if it's a bigger drop than Chuck usually has. His +2s are almost always higher so he gets a snack so I don't freak out.
If he will eat, I would offer him a small snack. Just to be safe.

He's been munching for the past four hours. He was so hungry when he got home! And then he fell asleep with his chin over his bowl like a toddler. Or like a cat who is very afraid someone will steal his food while he's sleeping. ;):cat:

He's slowed down on the eating at this point, so hopefully that also means he's slowing down on the drop. I'll test again soon to try to get a feel for what he's doing. As much as I cringe to see him still in the mid-100's, I think he's fallen about enough for this cycle!

After anesthesia, you do want to be careful how much food they eat at once. Anesthesia can also play with the GI system so you want to avoid him barfing. Many small meals is better.

Oh dear. He's down to 69 at +3. :nailbiting: Do I intervene now, or wait and test in another 30 minutes? Or just give him some carbs?

I hate it when I have anything done to any of the cats, I know your worry about your kitty's like I do mine. Glad he is home, safe and sound. Poor fella he was really hungry.

When ever I get advice, it is always good. Kris, gives good advice. When we 1st joined FDMB, I don't know what we would have done, if it had not been for Kris.

At +4 he's at 62, so it looks like he's slowed down. Crisis averted. ;)

It's amazing what a few hours at home (and a better BG level) can do for a kitty! He looks a million times better than he did a few hours ago!
