23-Mar Maverick Update and Upcoming Dental

Maverick is flying leisurely along and is finding new comfy spots to enjoy. Sometimes right by the window to watch the squirrels and the birds, other times he jumps up and nestles himself into my clothes in the closet for little afternoon cat naps. I gave up on having clothes without cat or dog hair on them a long time ago!

I've finally reconciled the need for Maverick to get a good teeth cleaning (hopefully no extractions, anti-jinx) and he'll be going in on Friday. I had been reluctant since I was worried about him having what I considered grey zone thyroid levels, but he's not getting any younger and the vet wasn't concerned, so at some point I have to trust the vet knows what she is doing.

I didn't want to bug them, but since I hadn't seen instructions yet, I thought I'd follow up. After mentioning multiple times to please check for specific instructions around fasting before the dental appointment given that he is diabetic, and I also specifically mentioned that Maverick only gets canned food so on that basis, please ask the vet if I can give 1/2 of his usual meal since I get up early and usually TFS at 5:30 am, would that be ok? They send me the standard instructions "no food after 9:00 pm" the night before.:banghead:

There's no way we can go without food after 9:00 pm the night before. That's only around +3ish after the pm dose, and he won't have even hit onset by then. It's sure left me thinking I hope I don't live to regret doing this dental :(.

Please send dental vines for Maverick, and some patience/calming vines for me. I'll need those before I call the clinic and request I talk to the vet myself - I'm currently nowhere near "serenity now" lol

My Taz just had a dental about 2 weeks ago. Since drop off was between 8-8:30 that morning, they told us that he could have food up until midnight. We ended up skipping his morning dose of insulin that day, because we felt it was better to be a little high, than to chance dropping too low. Sending you calming vibes and quick healing vibes to Maverick. :)

Thanks Sara, from what I've read there are some anesthetics that can lower BG so I'm pondering no shot in a.m., but will see where he's at. I've seen midnight more often mentioned here too; I appreciate you sharing your recent experience. 9:00 pm sure feels like a long time without food, but I don't want to run the risk of him having complications. He'll hate no food, plus the carrier and drive will be a nightmare; gotta be done though. I was a wreck when my civvie had his, and I already know Friday is going to be a long long day.

The dental specialist I used for Olive said no food after midnight. I also asked for her to be done 1st since she was diabetic and high risk. Found out they only do one dental per day.

There may be a reason they told you 9PM. Does he have an early morning appointment? They may want 12 hours with no food. I skipped Furball's AM dose when she had her dental. Sending prayers for you and Mav. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
Hi Carla-thanks so much, yes he's to be dropped off at 8:00 am. I suppose silver lining is I finally get to sleep in a couple extra hours instead of waking up at 5:00 am :) . I suspect you're right, they must be thinking 12 hours with no food. But boy oh boy, he's going to be getting a whopping meal at 9:00 pm then! Usually I stagger the snacks over a few feedings even past midnight, I might just quickly ask again tomorrow if midnight is ok.

I'll most definitely need those prayers when I have to get Maverick into his carrier.

Hi Paula nice to see you! I think Mav will be one of the first, and at least somewhat of a relief is I managed to book him in on a day where they have two vet techs. I'll add that to my list when I call, and ask what other procedures are being done and if he can go through his dental first, thank you for the suggestion!

Neko's dental specialist said up to 1/3 of her meal before 6:30am. But that was after the front desk said the standard "no food after midnight". I called, reminded them she was diabetic and asked them to ask the dentist, who gave the revised directions. There are different anaethesia protocols for diabetics. The anaesthesia induction drug typically given in Canada is not the one that lowers BG, and I was told it could temporarily increase it when given. However, when I didn't trust Neko I gave her a token dose in the AM. And she still got low 70's on the AT there.

Sending Maverick the strongest of dental vines, and calming vines for you!!! :bighug::bighug::bighug: Did you re-check with the vet about no food after 9:00PM? Like everyone else has said, the usual advice is no food after midnight?

I don't trust Maverick either, I think he'd most definitely get up to some shenanigans at the vet's. Every time we've been although he gets stressed getting there, and open mouth breathes through any vetty visits, as soon as I bring him home his numbers tank.

Thanks for the info on the anesthesia induction drug, I recall reading that. I wish I didn't question things so much sometimes. I wonder - wouldn't it be nice just to be oblivious and not second-guess what they're doing? Nope I just can't do that :p.

I tried to communicate via the front desk that I wanted to be sure the information they were sending was specific for diabetics, so when I got the standard info email it really didn't instill a sense of confidence.

Thank you Ruth! I'll have to ring them tomorrow and see if I can speak with the vet. She knows how detail-oriented and hands on I am, so I suspect she'll be anticipating my call

Thanks. Another to maybe ask about is how do they handle post op? Olives was one on one, at least thats what they say. The vet sees follow ups that day. Spays/neuters done on different day. I have to get Tux in.
