2 Aug 2022 - Whiskey - dental update

Hi all, so the update on my Whisk is that she had her dental (they also did a thorough ear cleaning), and the removed at least 10 teeth !

The vet was happy with the operation and said it went smoothly.

She is not a happy camper right now, and in a lot of pain; but has come home and eaten some pate, which is good.

Because she is still very sore and very wonky, the vet has suggested that I give insulin a miss tonight; as she just does not want to be handled right now, so testing will possibly traumatise her further.

He says her BG in general is in an area he is comfortable with not shooting tonight as well as this morning, and starting again from tomorrow.

I am going with his suggestion, as the series of tests and monitors that I have to do when she dives rapidly at night is likely to traumatise her in the current state, and I am prepared to sacrifice a day of insulin for her overall good.

Aww poor girl! When my civvie had dental last fall they took 8 teeth.

It's good she wanted to nibble. Sending healing vines your way and a hope that it helps her be a little less grouchy once she heals up! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Buprenorphine is really good for cats in pain. I got it from my vet for dental extractions and pancreatitis. I bet you are glad that is over. Whisky will be too once she heals. It might just bring her into remission again fingers and paws crossed. I hope your vet had you schedule a follow up visit in about 10-14 days to make sure she’s healed properly. We’re you given an antibiotic? I always have been given one if extractions were needed.

Good to know the dental went smoothly. 10 teeth! Did the vet give any pain meds? Onisor?
Hi there thanks Bhooma :), yes, he gave us some Onsior, she had an anti inflamatory injection today, so he said start from tomorrow.

Poor girl, yes, 10 teeth - but I am hoping that (among other things) this will also help resolve her ear issues, as I know for myself that ears and nasal / mouth are so closely connected and infections spread easily!

Thanks so much :bighug:, yes right now she is a very unhappy lady, but relieved to be home I think, she was SO stressed going to the vet this morning and being left there!

I was glad she was keen to eat when she got home!

Thanks Elise :). I did ask about the Buprenorphine, but he prefers to stick with the onsior, which I will give her tomorrow. I am glad it is over, and I think she will be too, she's been so unhappy.

While it would be lovely for her to go back into remission, right now I will settle for a healthy and happier girl whose BG stabilizes a bit and doesn't do those alarming nosedives, and I am hoping hat ultimately less pain and infection will help with that (I am hoping that we saw an inkling of it the first few days of last week when she started on her antibiotic and anti inflammatory course).

We do have anti-biotics, and will be going back to see him in about 10 days for an assessment.

They did an anti-biotic injection today, and pills from tomorrow morning.

On a different but related subject, I got in touch with an animal communicator over the weekend to try to help me understand some of the issues that have caused our Whisk to be so aggressive to George.

While it is slightly whooo whooo (as much I guess as using a kinesiologist), what she said did really lead me to feel that she did manage to genuinely get in touch with Whiskey - primarily because she reported the same initial response from Whiskey to her getting in touch that a good friend who is actually a kinesiologist did (which is an initial 'hell no' from Whiskey, and a need to persuade her that she really was there to help).

But - that said, assuming all the info she gave me is based on actuality, it has given me some insight into why Whiskey is the way she is, and how I can help her to (if not overcome) work towards minimizing the effects of her very real and complex fears.

Poor girl, on so many levels.

I've heard a few stories of kitty's that had their personality change for the better as a result of dentals. I guess pain (10 teeth!) can make you cranky. Paws crossed she'll feel better and happier now.

Good news about the surgery going well. I feel sorry for her being in pain... and I have no idea why these vets give Onsior instead of Bupe, since Onsior is not great for the kidneys (should be okay for three days though). I hope she feels soooo much better really soon; I know she will if she needed ten teeth removed. Yikes! I've been through that before with my cats. Did you get any clindamycin for post surgery (to prevent infection) or did you do clindamycin beforehand?

Finally, it's a great sign that she ate some pate already!

Thanks :)

She's very sore now, but at least she's eaten a bit so I'm not too worried about her overnight.

Vet said to rather skip insulin than shoot and have to poke tonight, especially if eating is a bit hit and miss.

Right now she seems to want to nap and be left mostly alone, but in the same room as us, suspect after having 10 teeth removed I'd feel much the same!

Both, antibiotics, starting again tomorrow, and she's been on them since last Tuesday to reduce bacterial load. He gave her an antibiotic injection today too.

He did a pre op blood test and says that the kidneys will be OK with the Onsior short term, which I will give her until Fri...but my preference for anti inflammatories is actually cat CBD treats (coconut oil based), so I will get her onto those as soon as possible too, should help with stress levels too!

Glad to hear about the antibiotic -- that's perfect. What kind of cat CBD treats? I'm interested in these. And your kitties like them? They're tasty? Thank you.

They are a South African brand. Our civvie, George, will eat them for arthritis, but he loathes cbd oil by itself. I've pasted the link below. They look pretty low carb, and at least while she is recovering, I'll definitely give her some.
