Posting late today, as I am feeling under the weather. :( I was really tired last night, and didn't think much of it... we had an early morning and a long day. This morning, called in sick to work, but figured I'd sleep for a bit, then get up and go in to the office. Except I woke up and realized I was in fact sick!

Willie showed his displeasure with me last night by shunning me... he slept on the sofa. After breakfast, he did come btb with me for awhile. So cute... he was sleeping on a pillow with his head hanging off it, he was so out! He's had a lot to say today... I have gotten quite the talking to! "You need to feed me! What are you still doing in bed? If you're staying home, then it is TV time! Turn on the hot dish, I'z cold!!" He is now sunning himself in front of the dish on the couch, though I'm making him share it today. 3Ps in place, and I'm now reading up on pemphigus, the most likely suspect for his skin condition.

Thanks again for all the kind thoughts and ideas yesterday! Wish results didn't take a week... Like I have that kind of patience! I got the +3 today because he's been known to dive off those low yellows, then got the +6 to make sure. I feel like I'm going to get yelled at should the vet pull up his spreadsheet, so I will not test again until PMPS.

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Glad you are at home resting and reading instead of at tbp. Willie will enjoy your company and is thrilled he has someone to talk to.

Re: 2/8 Willie AMPS 207, +3~172, +6~211 Lantus Pen ?

We finally have some Lantus pens! The costco pharmacist was also super-nice and let me purchase them individually rather than making me buy 5 of them, though he thinks I'm crazy and that I can't use an insulin syringe to draw out the insulin. The vet had called earlier to check on whether or not the script was right, so I went to pick it up (dreading the $200+ bill, given we still have time left on our vial, but figured i'd just get it out of the way).

Quick question for the pen users... the solostar leaflet states that I should keep the unopened pens refrigerated, but once opened, a solo star pen must NOT be stored in the fridge, but can be kept at room temp for 28 days. Is that what others are doing? Don't get me wrong, that would be awesome, as I am so prone to leaving Willie's vial out, which is a big no-no.

Thanks for any input!!

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

mine have been in the fridge since the day i bought them. i kept the 5 pens in the box on the top shelf of the fridge. as i took one out to use it, i stored it in a cup on the top shelf. only taking it out for the few seconds it takes to draw up my dose then putting it right back in that cup and back in the fridge. and i use mine literally down to the last drop without them losing effectiveness sooooooooooooooooo :-)

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Hi Christie. I keep mine refrigerated, and the last one was good until the very last drop also.
Like Cindy, I keep the pen in use, in a heavy mug, so it doesn't get disturbed, or knocked around.

I hope you feel better soon.

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Keep them refrigerated. It will prolong the life of the insulin. FWIW, my pharmacy has a "Keep Refrigerated" label slapped on the box.

I think the reason the manufacturer says to keep at room temp once opened is that it's easier for human use. When Lantus came on the market in the pen form, it made travel much easier. People didn't have to refrigerate their insulin so you didn't need to have it in a cooler on a plane, etc. I suspect that varying the temperature (i.e., refrigerate, travel without refrigerate, refrigerate) would cause more problems. A consistent temp makes sense from that perspective. Keeping it constantly refrigerated since we use so little compared to human use also makes sense.

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

I couldn't agree more.. refrigerate ;-)
I get nailbite_smile even taking it out of the refrigerator to draw the insulin up  nah.. not really that dramatic.. but maybe

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Thanks, guys! I like the mug idea... will have to do that! No more bubble wrap... i keep the vial in a sleeve of it! LOL

Off to cook dinner! Broiled lamb chops, grilled zucchini dressed with lemon, olive oil and rosemary, and a little sauteed spinach with oven dried tomatoes that have been stuffed with parm and whole wheat bread crumbs. I'm hungry!

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Nice on getting the pens - I hope you like them. it always racks me up when we have to educate pour vets and our pharmacist on how we use these things. It was nice of them to let you buy just one. Always in the frig for mine - they will last a long time. It is so much more economical than the vial.

I hope you feel better too - sorry you are sick. Too funny on Willie on the pillow. I love it when they do that. Once in a while Mannie will come and snuggled under my chin - not often enough though.

wow on dinner! I suspect that you are a good cook - and really like cooking, It sounds wonderful!

Hey Willie! What's up? Your bean whips up some really good fuds - she share with you? See you tomorrow maybe? ~~ Mannie

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Wow, you are quite the chef! I'm impressed.

Great suggestion with the mug. Mine is in this small cheap glad throwaway tupperware thing. Changing it to a heavy mug tonight.

Re: 2/8 Willie PMPS 237, Lantus Pen ?s

Willie currently looks like a burrito with a head... legs all tucked in, napping in front of the heat lamp. About to give him a poke to be safe before bed. Able to see his stitches... looks like they took skin samples in 3 spots. A little irritated that the vet didn't discuss the stitches with me. I'm assuming they come out on their own? No special care required? These things should have been discussed. No redness or swelling, though, so that it is good. Not thrilled with their choice of antibiotic (baytril), but it does appear that they are right at the recommended dosage for cats his weight, so I'm reluctantly going along with for now. We will not be continuing it longterm, though... especially since it wasn't the vet's first choice. They wanted to give him clindamycin, but were out of it.

Honestly, dinner was super easy. I have a cast-iron sandwich press... sliced up the zucchini and put the slices on a grill pan sprayed with cooking spray, and put the press thingy on top. Lamb chops had been marinating in olive oil, a little wine, lemon, garlic and rosemary in a baggy. They went in the broiler for 10 minutes. Ended up going with fresh baby tomatoes that needed to be used... halved them, tossed on olive oil, balsamic, salt and pepper, then poured them over finished zucchini on the plate. Meant to put on parm, but was too hungry to wait! Other than the marinade, which took about 2 minutes to prep yesterday, dinner took around 10 minutes total to cook.

Hope everyone has a great night!

Mannie! I'z wud lubs to hang out tomorrow! Wat u got in mind? :) Letz go someplace warm! I'z haz to be careful, tho... I'z got steeches! --Willie

wow on the stitches thing and Willie. I hope you can get the meds that you want. I just know so little about all that - bad me! Kudos to you for dong your research. as yes - I too think that it should have been discussed.

And as simple as it may have been - the food sounds wonderful!

And NICE +4 Willie - super! :-D :-D

Willie - ok dude - you are ON! We will find someplace warm, and will take care of you - stitches and all. maybe we can hang out at Gracie,or Tess's - it is warm and sunny there. See you tomorrow! ~~ Mannie
