2/4 Fortune Hospital Update - new info

Yesterday was one of the scariest days of my life.

But we have good news! Fortune responded well to the blood transfusion and is more frisky when they poke and prod him. Good boy! He is now in stable condition. :joyful:

He tested negative for ketones, but I think he was still acidic. He is now on short-acting insulin while they try to regulate his blood sugar - it was in the high 600s yesterday.

Last night is fuzzy, but I remember the emergency vet calling at 3am to tell us that Fortune responded to the treatment and that we can go to bed because he is not in critical condition. Gosh, I'm tearing up just writing that!

The IM doctor this morning chatted with us for longer - we aren't sure what caused his severe anemia, and they are looking at his SCL progressing, potential bone marrow involvement, and pancreatitis. This morning they are doing another abdominal u/s and chest x-ray.

My boy is going to have his belly shaved again, but it gets him closer to coming home to us!

The IM also wants us to stop raw food so the hunt continues for something he will finish - currently he was eating and finishing DOUBLE portions of the Small Batch raw rabbit and finally plumping up a bit! She also wants us to stop digestive enzymes. I expect we will have to stop TR as well.

I really hope we can get him on treatment ASAP. I just want him to be comfy and feel safe, sunning on his bed, or laying in our laps staring at us intently.

I'm so very happy to hear that Fortune is in stable condition, and I hope he gets to come home to his family very soon. Sending many more prayers for that.
You are both amazing cat parents. Fortune is so lucky to have you.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

So glad to hear Fortune is stable :cat: Hope he continues to improve and is home snuggling with you soon. Sending lots of love and healing :bighug: Hope you can get some rest today :bighug:

If you need a good food for an IBD kitty, take a look at ZiwiPeak. They have novel proteins and there are no gums, carrageenan or other junk in the food. It's available through Chewy's and Amazon.

Great news! I kept looking for an update last night.

If you are feeding a raw food that has no bones in it (some rabbit does), you can gently pan fry it. Ground bone powder is OK, not bones that are just smaller fragments. I cannot imagine why you would need to stop TR unless your life style is changing.

Fortune’s vitals are normal, BP is normal, his gums are pink and he is complaining loudly when they have to do tests on him! Yay!!!

We are still waiting for the u/s, X-ray and new bw to know what is going on, and how the anemia happened so suddenly. He is going to need to stay overnight again. :(

We are so grateful he seems to have responded to transfusion. Now we watch and wait for him to come home. Thank you all for the support! :bighug:

As for food you can start making your own and gently cooking it using EZ Complete perhaps.

We are talking about this, maybe batch cooking and freezing. The IM had mentioned hydrolyzed protein this morning, but I want to find more options since Royal Canin is full of junk, too.

Thank you! We asked our local pet store to order the rabbit, since they only have lamb&rabbit. Appreciate the suggestion!

thank you :bighug: we were a mess, and only found out he was stable at 3am EST after which we promptly passed out!

He is currently on fast acting insulin, so I’m going to wait and see what the recommendation is out of the hospital before we decide what protocol to keep following.

I’m hoping hard he will be home tomorrow, and we can figure out what to do from there.

Hi Rachel , just read yesterday's post. I wanted to cry.
I'm so happy Fortune is doing much better today.
I'm praying for your precious boy to fully recover and come home to you.
You are both great parents ♥
You hang in there Fortune, we are all praying for you
Please keep us updated
Sending you hugs :bighug::bighug::bighug:

We just spoke to the doctor, and while Fortune is eating, bright and alert, his RBC count was 21 this morning post transfusion and down to 18 tonight so he is still anemic. Because he is such a complex gentlemen they are not certain where the bleeding is coming from. His creatinine is normal but BUN is elevated which the IM explained means there is GI tract bleeding, however on ultrasound they didn't see any signs of blood loss.

His ultrasound did show a progression in his rt kidney which has a mass that could be a hematoma, and looks "infiltrated with disease," however his kidney levels are normal.

It could also just be progression from SCL, since cancer makes red blood cells more fragile.

He is getting another transfusion tonight, and depending on how he responds we will know more. The IM indicated that will tells us if we have "day or weeks" with him.

I am hoping and praying that he has a big turn around and pulls through this, otherwise we are trying to cope with what it will be like to say goodbye. Fortune is my first kitty baby, so this is all new territory. I want to move heaven and earth to help him feel better.

This was when we were reunited the first time after I had to travel overnight.

My heart melted! :bighug: I understand what you are going through. Ruby and her sister Olive are my first kitty babies too. Holding Fortune in the light and in my heart. I hope he will be ok.
