Bart is going to be seeing a new vet this week. The last vet told me that the lantus would last 6 months and so did the pharmacy. I keep it refridgerated and it still looks clear. I plan on doing his curve tomorrow hopefully he will show me better numbers. I wBart's SSill do his profile tomorrow.

I used to get more than a month out of a Lantus pen...but i know that's not true for most folks.

Best of luck with the new vet!

and bart...we'd LOVE to see you in the nicer numbers, buddy :-D

Honestly, I would try new insulin and see if it has a positive effect on Bart's numbers. It can't hurt given what Bart's numbers look like.

The lantus I was using was still clear and just over a month old. If you want to see what happened when I changed it over just in case it was the reason Vyktor's numbers weren't coming down, check out Vyktors ss on 02/02/2012.

If you try new insulin and there's no change you can still go back to using the old stuff, obviously I won't be using Vyktor's old bottle again!

i'm thinking his high numbers may be from the insulin being pooped out also. i haven't had any last longer than about 6 weeks and i think i pamper it very carefully.

when you buy more, it will cost you less to buy a Solostar Pen. it holds 1/3 the amount of insulin that the vial holds. For your first prescription, here's a $25 coupon: http://www.lantus.com/solostar-insulin-pen/solostar-coupon.aspx I have a local pharmacy that will sell me 1 pen for $43. you'll have to call around to find someone to sell a single one. my pharmacy chain is called Save-On if you have that one near you. Others buy the pack, which is 5 pens. prices really vary and some people buy online, some buy locally. The most i've heard for the 5 pack is around $220, i think. i've heard as little as $110ish from a canadian pharmacy. if you want opinions on this, just ask in your subject line and people will give you their ideas.

we use the pens like they were vials - so you still use your syringes and measure it just like you've been doing. there are directions on the Sticky: Lantus & Levemir: Info, Proper Handling & Storage

your vet ought to be willing to call in a new prescription or a refill for you even before your appt. btw, you need different prescriptions for the vials and the pens. sounds like you have a vial now.

Hi Debby

Good luck with the new insulin.

You don't have to relink Bart's SS in your condo every day....it's in your signature block. We're just looking for the previous day's condo's link.

If you have any questions about that OR about the profile, please PM me and I'll help you....I can even set the profile up for you and make it easier.

I hope some new Lantus brings Bart's numbers down for you, Debby. I didn't know it had such a short lifespan, either. My vet told me 6 months per vial, and the one I'm using now is over 2 months old. Time for a new one -- Lantus and vet, I think.

I read on here that lantus can last for 6 months buBart's SSt his is probably weakening. I started his curve today and his numbers are the best they have been in the last few days so far.
