Yesterday's condo here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=62712

Recap of Yesterday's BG readings:

AMPS - 165, gave .05 units Lantus (8th cycle)
+2 - 142
+4 - 76
+6 - 60
+8 - 69
PMPS - 93, gave .05 units Lantus (9th cycle)
+2.5 - 99

Cini started wheezing this morning  I started him back on the Flovent inhaler (2 puffs twice a day). Hopefully his BG readings won't skyrocket. It seemed like he was hitting a good stride there.

Happy Friday everyone !

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127 - Wheezing Again :(

I really think you should keep him on the flovent - a low maintenance dose when you get him stabilized. The inhaled meds group on Yahoo is cool if you haven't joined it yet. Maverick was on 250mcg of flovent and it didn't touch his BG. He was on 0.10 drops of lantus when he passed away from a possible heart attack/clot.

Hey Karrie, can you give me that link again please?

And do you have the link to that 4 Corners Pharmacy?

I have been so busy with work that I hardly have time to think!

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127 - Wheezing Again :(

Hey Cathy,

That's got to be disappointing about the wheezing. Crappola.

Curry's bg's have been averaging 100 these last couple of weeks. Her esinophil count is also higher right now(took her in for a 6 month checkup). Elevated esinophil count most likely due to the increase in tree pollen now in Houston. She doesn't cough but her numbers can become a little elevated during allergy season.

I'm kinda with Karrie on this in terms of keeping Cini Mini on a maintanence dose. I know...I'm being a "debbie downer". Feline asthma can be progressive, but if you keep them on the flovent it keeps the inflammation down. And hopefully her glucose as well.

I know, its a pain to have to consider this in terms of time and expenses. I wonder if some of Cini Mini's higher numbers might be influenced by an underlying inflammation in the lungs that doesn't always rear its head w/noticeable symptoms like coughing or wheezing. Like with Curry right now....no coughing but numbers a bit higher than usual.

Remember it can take up to 3 weeks for the flovent to get into the lungs since the molecules are fairly large.

Here's the link to 4 Corners pharmacy....Remember....no prescription needed and allow 3 weeks for delivery. I have ususally gotten mine in two weeks and typically have to sign for it at the Post Office.

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127,+4/116 - Wheezing Again :

You guys are my heroes!

I'll definitely join that group and make an order at 4Corners today.

With the reduced cost of getting the Flovent from 4 Corners I think I could afford to give it to him every day.

What would be a good maintenance dose? He only wheezed the one time this morning.

He's actually chasing a paper ball around the loft right now so he's not depressed because of the asthma. But his BGs are in the blue range today.

aw, Mini-Man...

wish you didn't have to deal with this

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127 - Wheezing Again :(

He was fine, despite the blindness from the feline herpes, until he had the vaccine reaction when he was 5 yrs old. The Vet said that event probably compromised his immune system.

So now it seems every year or two it's something different. Liver disease, feline asthma, toxoplasmosis, feline diabetes @-)

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127 - Wheezing Again :(

Yay for chasing around a paper ball.

I'm not sure what you were giving Cini in the past.

One of the neat features of flovent is that you really can't overdose them on it.

When Curry was first diagnosed, my vet put her on 110 (1puff) twice a day.

Over time I did see that the coughing had returned (I was bummed) and increased her to 220 twice a day.

She's now at the max dose of 2 puffs of the 220 twice a day.

I upped it on my own when I saw her beginning to cough more.

Maybe try starting at the 110 twice a day. See how Cini does. Or do what you did before and then go down to just the 110 twice daily. I think you said you gave 220 twice daily to begin with. Might be mistaken.

But remember it can take awhile to get into the lungs. If I see Curry coughing she gets a puff of the Albuterol. It has an immediate effect. Or just before I would give Curry her Flovent twice daily, I would give her the Albuterol. I would give the Albuterol a few mintues before the Flovent. Albuterol helps to open the bronchioles and allow the Flovent to do its thing.

Not sure if what I wrote is confusing....just let me know and I can clarify.

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini- AMPS 120,+2/127,+4/116 - Wheezing Again :

Hi Tena, not confusing at all.

Usually when Cini has a flareup the Vet will tell me to do a tapering schedule starting off with Flovent 220mcg, two puffs twice a day for 5 days, then if he's doing ok go to 2 puffs once a day for 5 days, and then 2 puffs every other day for 5 days.

I went ahead and started him back on 2 puffs of the 220mcg twice a day.

I have a call in to the Vet, she works tomorrow. She's pretty open minded and I will talk to her about the Albuterol.

Hi Cathy,

I am just going to second what Tena and Karrie have said......long term flovent is safest for Cini - you want to keep the inflammation under control. Zoe has been on Flovent (Flixotide from 4Corners) for over 2 years and is doing well.

Good luck....and if you have any questions....just ask!!!

I also used the albuterol when Maverick started having a flareup to help his flovent work better. We did end up having to increase from a very stable 110mcg twice a day to twice that when he started coughing again. The vet let him go six months with coughing and wouldn't approve an increase. I listened to the inhaled meds board and within a week and a half of doubling the flovent he was not coughing and stayed symptom free until he passed.

Maverick also had a reaction to a vaccine once. He recovered from almost dying of liver disease - a low calorie diet and stress in the home were factors with this though. He had asthma, bad hip arthritis, feline diabetes was in the beginning stages of CRF - not yet needing fluids and ended up dying from most likely undiagnosed heart issues - Maine Coons are genetically predisposed and I wasn't aware of this. So like you it seemed to be one thing after another. I miss him :(

I wouldn't take him off flovent again. Asthma actually damages the lungs and I'm sure stresses his system overall. I bet he would be fine on 110mcg twice a day. If not you will know. The 250mcg puffer was only slightly more expensive than the 110. I wish I had known earlier, but since I was going against my vets advice I was doing two puffs of the 110 and it was expensive. We ditched the bully vet and got an updated prescription from a new vet.

Re: 2/3-Cini Mini-AMPS 120,+2/127,+4/116,+9.5/156 - Wheezing

Good luck - I hope Cini Mini feels better soon. It's a good sign that he is playing with a paper ball.

I'm sorry Cini is wheezing today....poor boy!! He's so lucky you are so on top of it!!!

I hope the meds help him soon....you've got some great and very knowledgeable people helping you.

Have a great night.
