Good Morning LL and Happy Friday Eve!
Thank you Caroline (for the pm) and Linda for giving me info on the Pred. Blackie is getting 2.5mg bid (twice a day). Because the vet was concerned about the effect on the diabetes, he thought it would be more manageable to dose it twice a day.

So far the Pred has not increased Blackie's appetite. He would not eat much at all this morning with his shot and he would not even eat his treats after his fluids - this was a first. I syringe fed about 1 Tb and got him to eat a small amount of FF Medley Turkey. He just did not seem to feel good at all this morning - he got mad when I picked him up too. But, he did eat at +2 when DH tested and fed, so I feel a little better about that.

His behavior is a little odd since we started the Pred too. He will sit upright and stare into space for long periods of time and he has been laying down and sleeping in either of the Breeze litterboxes. He was very affectionate last night and except for this morning, has wanted to be picked up. On the good side, all P's are in place.

I have a call into the vet to see where we go from here. I wish I could find a way to make Blackie feel better.

Any signs of nausea? When Maverick was nauseated he would show interest in food but lick or just sniff and walk away looking disappointed. Any lip licking/smacking or tooth grinding?

Hugs.

No tooth grinding, but yes, there was lip smacking. And he would like his dried Chicken treat, but he wouldn't eat it. But then at +2 he ate almost his whole bowl of food. Maybe it took that long for the Pepcid to kick in?

Re: 2/3 Blackie amps 345 +2 352

Pepcid isn't an antinausea medication really - it only helps if excess stomach acid causes discomfort and nausea.

In cases like pancreatitis and other illnesses nausea is present. It may be psychological by associating food with feeling unwell. If Blackie is showing interest in food but not eating when presented this is a classic sign of nausea.

A lot of vets treat cat nausea the same as dogs. Cats are different so metoclopromide just isn't ideal. It is great if nausea is due to GI motility issues (such as vomiting undigested food hours after eating).

I have a lot of experience with nausea with Maverick and fighting our vet to prescribe something. He didn't eat any food for 9 weeks when he was recovering from FHL. A lot of vets also throw appetite stimulants which is a nightmare to a cat with nausea. I don't get it. It would be like giving us one with the flu. I'd never eat chicken soup again thats for sure.

We address nausea often on the assisted feeding group. I can't share their files here, but this is an article we suggest people can print out and bring to their vets. Its a technical document written by a veterinarian:

Hi Ele - I am sorry for the continued issues with Blackie - I wish I knew of something that would help. It sounds like Karrie has some experience with what you are dealing with. Good luck with it all. And Blackie - feel better soon! I am glad that everything else is well.

I just got off the phone with the vet and he is prescribing Zofran for Blackie. I'll pick it up tonight. We also talked about Blackie in general and he did say that the Pred is kind of our last ditch effort to get Blackie over the pancreatitis. He's hoping it will reduce the inflammation, but said it could take up to a week. I'm stopping Blackie's Gabapentin because the Pred is working on his arthritis. He has been walking and standing better since yesterday.

I went home at +4 and Blackie ate well and DH reported he ate well again at +6.5. :-D We're going to keep him on the Mirt for a while longer too.

Thank you all for your continued healing vines and thoughts.

Wishing the zofran works for you. Its available in generic ondansetron also. And if you call around - places like walgreens I believe sell it for $3 per 4mg pill which is four doses. A lot of vets overdo the zofran also. It will be worth its weight in gold if it works though.

Up here in Canada the cheapest I found ondansetron at the time was $9 a pill at walmart.

Sending hugs.

Ele, I think you will be happy with the Zofran. It worked very well for Bear and his civie IBD/lymphoma brother Teddy.

Hi Ele,

I sure am sorry Blackie not feeling well. Sending our thoughts and prayers to you guys.

Thanks for visiting our condo, and for your support. Miss Witty is here on the bed with us.
