I only hooted this  pmps because I expect his BG to go up with his pm pred dose, and because I gave him some KD kibble. I think his pmps was so low because he has barely eaten all day. He really doesn't like the canned renal diets. I have ordered the Royal Canin renal variety called "Chunks and Gravy", and picked up some KD and Reduced Protein kibbles. The BG's will be going for a wild ride, I think. nailbite_smile
ETA: +2 178. Yep, wild ride.
Thanks you to those who, again, have shown so much support and especially to those who took the time to write long, detailed posts. I have saved them to read over and again.
Choy-Foong, when you said "his phos level needs to come down, yesterday", that got my attention. I have been reading a LOT of stuff, but that cut to the chase for me. I had a discussion with the vet as well, along the lines of what you were saying, Carolyn, about quantity vs quality of life. I was saying that taking away his ability to enjoy food, or to isolate him from Teddy to eat a separate diet were not things I wanted to do. I have no intention of letting him die of untreated renal disease, but I am going to be realistic about what we can and cannot do.
I am going to try very hard to keep him on Rx renal foods, even though his BG will suffer as a result, as long as he will eat it and maintain his weight on it. I will try to administer the binder and juggle his other meds to the extent that my schedule allows. (The binder is on order, and it is going to be Al Oh in capsules). If we get a grip on this, we will look at other treatments (Calcitriol, Benazapril) if needed. I have to keep an eye on Teddy, who will be eating Bear's food. He's a cancer kitty on steroids, and I don't think a low protein, high carb diet will do him any favors. I also have to try and maintain a bit of my own health because there is no one else to care for these guys if I can't.
Choy-Foong, Bear thanks you for naming him the King of Finicky Kitties.
