Good Morning and Happy Friday, Everyone,

Rusty had a good night snuggling between his beans--and it WAS COLD, down to -15 again. We are promised a warming trend beginning on Sunday. It has been such a relentlessly cold Jan. and Feb. that many people are having problems with their pipes freezing: the freeze line has moved down to 6 feet (normally it is about 3 feet). People who have had problems in the past with pipes freezing have been told to leave a faucet running at a trickle overnight.

Rusty ate all his nighttime food and this morning took a few bites of breakfast and then went straight to his little bed by the radiator. I'm about to offer it to him again, heated up a bit to bring out the aroma.

I plan a trip to Plattsburgh for Rusty's fuds this afternoon. I've decided to stop experimenting with foods and go back to his old standbys: FF T&G, Wellness Chicken, Wellness Turkey. I'll keep Wellness Core Turkey & Duck in the rotation, and also Dave's 95% Chicken and Chicken Liver (if it ever gets back in stock), and perhaps Merrick Chicken paté, but nothing else has been much of a hit around here, and lots of foods have been totally rejected. I still have concerns about the Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey, but Rusty likes them and has never had a problem with them. They are high in calories, and he needs that!

Wishing all a good weekend and good weather!

Morning, Ella and Rusty!!! :coffee: It's cold here, too. We've had frozen pipes before, and it's never pleasant. We've had to also keep the hot water tap on a trickle, however, when I wake up to check on it, it normally has stopped. I think it's been a brutally cold winter all over the nation, save for the most southern areas. I hear the Caribbean calling of our names! LOL Don't we wish? :D

I hope that Mr. Rusty eats more today for you. My babies all love the radiator heaters, too. We have 3 portable ones that they can lay close to. I also heat up Blackie's fuds to bring out the aroma, and make it not so cold for her to eat. Sometimes, if the microwave doesn't warm it up enough (I don't put it in there any more than 9 seconds at the very most), and it's still cool to the touch, I'll put the bowl (it's a ceramic one) ontop of a heater for a couple more minutes. By that time, the bowl's warmed up, and the food is nicely warmed up, too, but never too warm. I never want to burn her little tongue.

Good luck with the fuds. I hope that going back to the regular stuff helps him to eat more. Yes, he NEEDS calories. Come on, Mr. Rusty, please eat for your Mama Bean!

Have a good day, and stay safe and warm. Thank you for dropping by our condos. :bighug: We appreciate the visits, and the :D smilies, too. :D

Brrrr...it has been really cold here, too, but nothing like what you've got. The pipes at my store froze one night a couple weeks ago - fortunately no damage and they thawed out quickly.

Nice Rusty report! I stopped messing around with fuds experiments, too, even though the FF and Purina Trix eats aren't great as far as phos goes....she eats them happily, and that reduces both bean and kitty stress.

Have a great day, Ella...stay warm!

I hope they are right about the warming trend, I also hope they are right about rain here, but I'm not holding my breath.

The fuds dance is so frustrating. Unfortunately Tess has been snubbing all her old favorites, the Nulo has been pretty popular though. Unfortunately most of it has fish.

Say, you are taking sour cherry juice. All I could find was syrup. How do you take the juice? Just in water, straight?

I don't blame you for going back to the fuds you know Rusty will eat. It's too hard to find new fuds our kitties like. I hope it does warm up for you soon.

I still have concerns about the Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey, but Rusty likes them and has never had a problem with them. They are high in calories, and he needs that!

I work for a restoration construction company and we have had a ton of calls for frozen pipes. I hope all is safe at your house.

What are you concerns about Wellness Chick and Wellness Turkey. I feed this to Sammy. I think the Food list says that the Turkey is 4%. I didn't know there was a problem with them. Could you explain. Thanks.

I applaud you for trying to find other foods, Ella. But if Rusty's eating what he's got, that's the key. I have about three standards in our rotation meeting Polly's requirements as well as Boomer's (CKD). And, then, of course, there's the irresistible "fishy" food that I hold just in case Miss Polly gets fussy. Not often, thank goodness.

Yikes, it's cold up there. We'd have several week long stretches of deep freeze in Wisconsin (never above 0), but not months of breath-hurt cold. Ouch. And yes, a pencil-sized stream of water ran throughout the day and night at those times.

Hope shopping went well.

Marilyn and Polly

Good that Rusty will eat his staples. I'm in the same boat as Ann at the moment with Vyktor turning his nose up at all his regular fuds and wanting fish. Never had a problem with fuds before - I don't like it at all! I have actually tried kangaroo on him before but it was a no go - maybe he recognised the meat as belonging to his flying kangaroo taxi mates...

Say, you are taking sour cherry juice. All I could find was syrup. How do you take the juice? Just in water, straight?

Hi Ann, The tart cherry juice I buy is not a syrup. It is 100% tart cherry juice (Knudsen, Just Tart Cherry). I can buy it at the supermarket. Look in the "natural" section if you can't find it on the juice shelves. I pour a glass right out of the bottle. It isn't too sour. I like it! I think it is helping!

Yikes Rusty! That's a little too high on shore. Now that the bean is home from shopping, it's time for a lagoon dip. I hope you managed a successful fuds finding trip Ella.

After tomorrow, I'm going to have to hunt for that sour cherry juice. I think I remember seeing it in the "organic healthy" section too.

Yikes on the pipes freezing! We've very occasionally had to keep the water running in our kitchen - houses here aren't designed for cold.

Hi Tina, Several months ago one of the cats on the board and her 2 civvie companions were taken ill suddenly (renal failure?) and the vet determined that the only thing that all 3 had in common was a meal of Wellness. The civvies recovered, but the diabetic cat died. I don't recall at the moment her name, but Marje may be able to fill you in (Marje has stopped feeding Wellness to Gracie). Apparently there have been many anecdotal cases of cats getting sick on Wellness. I decided to find other foods for Rusty because of the upsetting news. Some of the discussion on the board took place at the end of December. Here is a link to one of Marje's condos: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/12-27-gracie-amps-320-3-298-6-121.130493/#post-1342321

Apparently the formulas were changed without comment and cats were refusing to eat, having intestinal problems, etc.

So why am I going back to Wellness? Rusty is a picky eater and has always liked it (In addition to Wellness Core, I feed only the Chicken and Turkey formulas and buy the 3-0z cans "product of Canada"). I've tried a lot of foods in the last few months and am not having much success (he likes them at first but then tires of them).

@Marje and Gracie : can you add better detail/commentary to this?

Hi again, everyone,
Rusty is having a "rest day". He got a somewhat short shot this morning (about a drop left in the syringe).
Got to take a break now and watch TV. It's hard to find old stuff on the new board software (or maybe I'm just not doing it correctly).
bbl,

Ella & Rusty

Hi Ella!!

I was reading back through all Rusty's condos to see the results of his U/S but looks like you had to cancel because of the weather. The food issue is such a tough one. When all is said and done, the best food for a cat is the one it will eat. Cats can be finicky and you can only do the best you can but the bottom line is they have to eat.

The member who first brought the WN issue up was Melinda with Talbot and siblings.

Gracie had been eating WN chicken, turkey, and beef and chicken for years. We never had an issue. But after the issue above and then Billie had some issues, and then Gracie had a weird poo and some blood in her vomit, I just decided to not take a chance. I've also been concerned about carregeenan in food and feel it had a lot to do with Tobey's intestinal issues. I got Tobey onto raw and have been searching for canned foods without carregeenan with the ultimate goal of feeding Gracie raw.

I hope that helps.

Thanks, Marje. I keep hoping that the Wellness is OK. Rusty really ate well this afternoon and this evening, when he finished the can of Turkey. I bought some more cans of the Chicken today when I went to Plattsburgh.

Yes, we rescheduled the ultrasound for late March. The weather was just too frigid (the only ferry running on Lake Champlain is an icebreaker! The lake is officially "closed"!). The vet said it was OK.

I hope your mom is doing well. Catch your condo in a few minutes.

Ella & Rusty

Thanks for visiting, everyone. The LagoonMeister is back on duty!
