Cini Mini's Mom

Yesterday's condo here: http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=64629

Recap of yesterday's BGs:

AMPS - 426
+2 - 357
+6 - 556
+8 - 410
PMPS - 329
+2 - 369
+3 - 393

This morning's AMPS was 414. I was really hoping the dry cat food was the culprit for the high AM BGs but, doesn't seem so  Hopefully the new bottle of insulin tomorrow will help bring some relief.

Hope everyone's Sunday is a peaceful one.

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414 - Red Dawn

Oh Cini!!!

Some times it can take quite a while for those dry food carbs to leave their systems especially if he got very much. ECID. Hoping he clears it today.

TIme to get back to green, Cini.....enuff is enuff.

Have a good day, Cathy.....it will clear :-D

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414 - Red Dawn

Could you put a note on your SS if Cini gets into contraband? Also, it's helpful to note when you start new insulin. I'm not sure how old your Lantus is. All of that info can factor in when trying to figure out whether a dose increase is warranted.

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414 - Red Dawn

Awww Cathy, it looks awful, I know, but CM will be down again into better numbers. I hate that wait too.
I enjoy Sienne's advice, no matter whose thread it's in. :-D

Hi Sienne, sure I'll put the note in for yesterday's fiasco. :-D

My bottle of Lantus was 7 months old. I'm getting a SoloStar vial tomorrow, this will be my first time using one of those. I'll make sure to notate when I start using it.

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414,+3/289,+6.5/164 - WOW!

so is today's amps still from the old vial? because that is one ancient vial! i'm amazed it's still producing movement in cini mini's numbers at all.

i imagine things will improve with a new pen. glad he came down nicely today!

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414,+3/289,+6.5/164 - WOW!

Hi Julie,

Yes. I don't get the new Solostar vial till tomorrow.

My Vet almost fainted when I told her the current vial was 7 months old.

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - AMPS 414,+3/289,+6.5/164,+9/154 - WOW!

I'm glad to see Cini's numbers are coming down :-D

One of Sid's vets thinks 6 months is a perfectly reasonable length of time for a vial of lantus! She probably wouldn't bat an eye at 7 months either.
It will be interesting to see what he does on the new pen.

Hi Lydia,

So far Cini is doing great with the old bottle!

I wonder if that stinker was getting in to the dry food at night and that's why his AMPS' were so high. :-x

they are sneaky little hoovers - i can't trust punkin with a dirty plate left around!

very nice non-bouncy pmps tonight. are you ok cathy? do you need smelling salts? not that i even know what they are, but that's what they say in the old tv shows, so i felt compelled!

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - PMPS 163 *Faints*

Cathy,
Hi, I had to give my 2 cents here. I've been obsessing all day over using the new pen, and not using the "old"… mad at myself for changing something that may not have needed it, and trusting that I had the intelligence to decide when to change insulin... I've questioned myself all day, and still going crazy because of what I did. Daphne was doing great on the old vial, and it was over 60, maybe even 70 days old. I read the research here on the site, and the person who did the research said, we can use the insulin even up to 6 months old… it said that we tend to change out the insulin, but may not need to so soon…don't know how correct that is, I didn't read or research that myself, but I'm sure someone here will have their own story of old insulin. So I decided I would change it and since i had a new pen from my uncle who didn't need it, and it was new, never used… Anyway, long story, Daphne's numbers were higher then they have been in many weeks and at strange times her numbers were high… so I went back to the "old" vial for now. I do plan on getting new insulin though from the Vet. …think my uncle may not have stored it correctly or something.

Also, please watch the great video Julie made for us on how to use the pen. There's some things I did not know about it,… just in case you didn't know about the pen use. If you need the link, I'm sure Julie (and punkin) has it, or I can go back and find it in my post yesterday. THANKS JULIE IF YOU ARE READING THIS, GREAT VIDEO!

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - PMPS 163 *Faints*

Hi Barb,

Insulin , whether old or new, can be so tricky!

My Vet was telling me that she thinks one should switch out the bottle every 5 months no matter what. She also said with an old bottle, the insulin becomes unstable and sometimes you can draw up a "good" dose and sometimes not and that's why you'll see erratic changes in BGs.

I did watch Julie's video on drawing up a dose in the Solostar pen but I kept hearing this "meowing" throughout it all ;-)

I'm still perplexed as to how Cini could have eaten dry cat food when he has an esophageal stricture which keeps him from swallowing anything with any kind of solidity to it. But I guess he was determined!

Re: 2/26-Cini Mini - PMPS 163 *Faints*

heehee you're welcome barb!

and yes, there was this insistent cat waiting for his FUD while we were videoing!

i've never had insulin last long enough to know - i suspect it has a lot to do with whether or not you see-saw the dose or let the temperature fluctuate. i did have one vial go bad and we could tell by the numbers - it was the one we took along to colorado for punkin's treatment and it was in and out of refrigeration.

perhaps cini mini gummed it. punkin would've.

Well, I sure wish I knew what really happened to Daphne's numbers for the last two days nailbite_smile
These kitties sure can play games with our heads I think.

I was just reading this and so I'll share, I thought it was interesting, I'm still new and learning, so maybe everyone already saw this (2009), but anyway, I found it informative http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/r ... 15,1906669
