This is my first post to this forum. Sweetie has been on 1U Lantus for 6 days now (days 1 and 3 he only had the AM shot but the last 3 days have been consistent). Yesterday and today I was able to do lots of BG tests so now I have some data to check out.

It looks to me like his peak/nadir is earlier than the "usual" for Lantus since his BGs for +3 / +4 have been lower than BG at 6+ and +8 for all three days with decent curves. Does this mean he processes Lantus more quickly than other cats, and does this have special implications for me to be aware of?

His appetite is back to normal which I think is a good thing. He gets 1/2 of a 5.5 can of Friskies classic pate 3x a day (6:45 am with shot, 6:30pm with shot, 11pm) and has always cleaned it all up except from 2/17 - 21 last week. He was 17+ lbs back in November but now is about 14. Now that he is eating normally he won't be eating in the 2 hour window before the PMPS; the late snacking might have bumped up the PMPS values before today.

Sorry I haven't created his Profile yet, but FYI he has no history of problems before FD, no medications.

Hi Cathy, and welcome to Lantus Land (you'll see it as short form LL). People here are very generous with their time, so feel free to keep asking questions. Make sure you have read all of the sticky notes at the top of this forum. It's good to print out the ones on shooting and handling low numbers, just in case you should have power out or can't get to the computer when you need that info.

Nadirs can vary from cat to cat and even from cycle to cycle. There are a number of cats on this forum who have nadirs in the +3-+4 hour range. The +6 is only a "typical" number. My Neko is completely inconsistent. If she starts higher she often nadirs later (as late as +9) and if she starts low it has been as early as +3, although sometimes not. They are cats, they aren't always predictable. However, Neko varies her nadir a lot more than most cats.

It's good you've been getting the number of tests you have. That is very helpful. The curves don't always have to be at the same times. Another time you could try just spot checks on a few of the odd hours (+3 +5 etc.) to help fill in the spreadsheet.

People here usually spread feeding out a bit, as it's easier on the pancreas to not have it all at once. The majority should be fed before nadir and none two hours before the shot as you are now doing. It depends if your cat is a grazer or a hoover how you feed. Mine is a hoover so I have to portion out food at certain times. I have an autofeeder that gives her mini meals at +1 and +2.

Welcome Cathy,
Good to see you over here.
My cat had an earlier nadir too. Just keep in the back of your mind, it can change.
You can learn a lot reading other condos... and of course, there's plenty to read to continue learning.
Glad to hear Sweetie's back to eating more normally.

Welcome to Lantus Land!

Great job on getting started testing so quickly and on getting your spreadsheet (SS) set up. It's clearer during the PM cycle where numbers are dropping although you don't know if they went any lower after your +4. The AM cycles are flat. Frankly, I think it's too early to really determine where the nadir is. If you've been shooting twice a day since 2/22, you'll need at least 5 days for the insulin depot to form. Prior to the depot stabilizing, things can be even more inconsistent.

We have a saying here -- every cat is different. Your cat's nadir is when it is. Gabby's a cat with an early nadir (except for those days when she throws me a curve). It actually makes it easier for my schedule.

If there's any means for you to spread Sweetie's food out, that would be great. Many of us use a timed feeder or freeze watered down food in ice cube trays to make "catsickles." You can leave cubes out for Sweetie to eat if you're gone. Unless your kitty is a grazer, feeding all of the day's food at one time may be a bit overwhelming for Sweetie's pancreas.

Please let us know if you have questions. There's a huge amount of information in the starred sticky notes at the top of the Board. We're also here to lend a hand if you have questions.
