Thank you. So glad I'd made the appointment earlier in the week as he was definitely worse this morning. It's definitely a skin allergy, mostly on his face and base of ears, (similar to what he has had before). Not inside the ears fortunately. He was given a non-steroid anti-inflammatory injection. Cone is on, with a topical cream on the skin for a day or so. And an anti-histamine tablet for four days from tonight. Vet days none of these should directly affect his BG. But of course he is not feeling great, poor little lamb, so I won't be surprised if he remains a little high.

Not sure exactly what caused this outbreak. It started a couple days after a new flea treatment (Bravecto - previously on Revolution, and before that Seresto - which I paused as he had a bad skin infection last year, before his diagnosis). He is definitely allergic to fleas. But maybe grass as well. He's always been an itchy boy.

The cream has prednisolone in it. The vet said it is okay as he is not taking it systemically, just topically and only a tiny bit, today and maybe tomorrow. I hope that is correct and not going to cause hyperglycemia?

Hi Helen, oh poor boy. Do you have a soft cone for him that’s not too uncomfortable?
It’s so hard on them when we have to put on the cone.

Hope the meds help quickly and Noogi feels much better. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
I hate skin allergies! It’s super hard to figure the cause. Mocha has them and the ears are dermatitis. I give her 1/2 a regular strength Zyrtec every day for the scratching and it pretty much helps. No side effects. Vet approved. She also has EGC which looks like ulcers on her lip . I think both are good and environmental in cause. Sounds like the freak med likely is the cause in this case.

The steroid in the ear med will raise for bg. I’ve seen cats come here recently diagnosed that have used ear gel with steroids. There’s one or more without but I don’t recall the name or who has used it . Sorry about that. It’s temporary so should return to normal.

Thanks Staci. I don't have one of those soft cones unfortunately, but he is okay in a normal one. He's had to wear one quite often before and he is actually a good little patient. Just today and tomorrow <crossing fingers>

Thanks for the info Elise. Haven't noticed it increase his BG so far (been seven hours now since application). And I will probably use the lotion once tomorrow only, and then call it a day. Hopefully that will do the trick getting the irritated skin under control, without causing too much disruption to his blood sugar. Noogi is going through a phase of too high BG anyway as I wait enough cycles before I make a decision on a dose increase (which I am likely to do soon, maybe Monday).

Zyrtec (cetirizine) is available in South Africa so I can try that if i need to. The one we are starting tonight is Allergex (chlorpheniramine) which the vet said not be an issue with diabetes in any way. I did a search on this site and see that others have used it successfully.
