Hi guys, back from the falls and need a little advice-hope it's OK to rent a condo...

Arlene has been OTJ since May 2009. I've been periodically checking her BG and she has been running pretty true to her norm until this month's test. Saturday she tested at 261 and thinking it was a food spike (we free feed), I picked up food Sat pm and retested Sun am and she was 241.

I will call Vet Mon and get her in on Thurs to check n see if there's something else going on. Her last checkup was for a discoloration of the eye, vet couldn't exactly diagnose it but thought was uveitis. She still has that discoloration but doesn't look like an ulcer, no thickening or bulging... She just had a dental Fall 2009 w extraction.

Has been peeing, preening, purring and good appetite. A little tottery and likes to sleep a lot (well she is 17). Did a ketone test this weekend it was negative. Has been on low carb FF and raw meat treats since her DX in 09.

So we're thinking could be infection spiking her BG.

??Should I start her back up on Lantus while we're waiting to see the vet??

Such a complicated decision for her age. At what point will her poor old body just give out? Thanks for your ideas and support.

To be honest, her body will give out a whole lot sooner without insulin. Lantus will, at the very least protect her kidneys. Unless the vet has serious reservations, I can't see why an Rx couldn't be called in to get you started.

Has the vet been running geriatric blood panels on Arlene over the last several years?

awww, Kathy, I'm sorry you're seeing those numbers.

I'm glad you're taking her to the vet. Most likely there is something causing her numbers to go up. I would call the vet and ask what they think about giving insulin. If she's still high in the morning, I would be tempted to see if the vet can call in a prescription and get her started. Then if they find an infection or whatever, hopefully it will just take a short time on insulin to bring her numbers back down.

Good to see you, but sorry it is under these circumstances!

I hope the vet can track down what might be causing her higher numbers, and it leads to the detection of some sort of underlying infection.

I'm no expert, but like Libby and Sienna have suggested, might make sense to start her on insulin just in case (and until) you get some sort of definitive report from vet?

I PM'd Jill after I posted here last night, and her suggestion was to definitely get Arlene in to the vet, but to maybe spend a couple of days collecting data before you start shooting. I would probably test before her AM meal and again about 3 hours later, same in the PM, and maybe another time or two during the day. Then see where that goes. Hope this helps!

Kathy--Hope they can find the cause of this quickly & resolve Arlene's bg numbers--Happy to see you, sorry it's for this-Sure, you can have some space here--HUGS~! Get better there Arlene!!

Thanks to all for your replies. Yes, will call DH this AM to see if he can test today and we'll get into the vet. Will hold off shooting. Those numbers aren't outrageous, but still higher that what is good. Poor ol' girl she's such a fighter...was so lovely and rubbing and purring this morning when I groomed her.

Hope Arlene checks out OK at Vet's. 17 years young - as my vet says - it's not just the age it's about the cat. Hope it's just a bump in the road.
