Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

There could indeed be some stress from the loss of Mil going on. He knows something has changed, the routine is off or different etc.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

(((Serryn)))) many tears for you .....we all know how much you love your Mil and I'm sure Vyktor is picking up on the sadness and stress. Keeping you all in our thoughts.

You're right...the NDW should be gone by now. If he's not back down after the a.m. cycle 2/3, I'd be thinking about another increase.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

Serryn,

Deepest sorrow here for your loss of sweet little Mil...
I just signed on, saw the sad news, and posted in your other condo.

My heart aches for you, friend...

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

Dear Serryn,

I just saw your yesterday's condo too and am so sad to read that your sweet Mil has passed. We saw the most beautiful rainbow today and I think it was because Mil arrived at the bridge and was being greeted by our GAs.

Thinking of you and Vyktor and Meg, both of whom must be grieving as well,

Hugs to you all,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

I. too, am so sorry for your loss. Kitties are so sensitive and I am sure this is effecting him. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342

Serryn, sending comfort vines to you and Vyktor. I'm sure he senses something with the loss of Mil. Hope Vyktor comes down. Hugs.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311

Thanks for your kind thoughts at this time. I'm sorry that I don't feel up to visiting.

Tried new insulin bottle tonight in case that's the problem. Also tried to keep my crying away from him today in case that's contributing. Just cuddles and scritches and reassurance for him, crying outside!

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311

I'm sure he can tell you're deeply sad. Cats are very sensitive or intuitive, I think. (((hugs)))

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311

Vyktor is very in tune with you and suffers your grief. It may well have an effect on his BGs. But this will level out. I hope the new juice helps. Prayers of comfort coming your way.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311 +4 142

Looks like the insulin was no good, we haven't had a drop like this before

Actually on recheck we have on 12/24 when we ended up getting down to 63 but he wasn't eating that morning because of an antibiotic in his food.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311 +4 142

How old was the other insulin? Generally they lose efficacy at about 2% per week(?) after opening. Learned that from one of my clients who is a rep. for the insulin pump and lantus....

I can't hang on this morning...gotta go...I'll be back this afternoon.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor AMPS 342 +6 326 PMPS 311 +4 142

Just over a month but I wasn't handling it properly to start off with, in accordance with the instructions of vet and chemist I was, not shaking but gently turning up and down before use, also I was injecting the air into the insulin itself and injecting insulin back into the vial - then I saw Julie's video and mended my ways. I do take it out of the fridge ten minutes before I use it because it seems to bother Vyktor less but I think that's okay isn't it?

I reread the instructions the other day and also noticed that lantus doesn't like light so I'm keeping this vial in a little carboard box in the fridge - it probably meant sunlight but I figured it can't hurt to be extra cautious.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142

the next time you go to buy lantus,

buy the pens, not the vials. Pens come in a package of 5. Even though the initial outlay of money seems to pinch the pocket book, 5 pens can last up to 6 months with careful handling. So...they are actually cheaper long term. You end up using all the insulin or wasting very little as opposed to the vial.

And you can often find them much cheaper through some of the online pharmacies. The last set of pens I purchased were just over $100 including shipping. That works out to be a little over $20 @ mth.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142

looks like the new insulin is sure kicking in and sending you lots more ((((hugs)))) for your loss of Mil :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142

Hi again, Serryn,
The old vial of insulin almost certainly was compromised. The new vial should help Vyktor's numbers a lot. I keep my insulin in a small bubblewrap envelope inside a small cardboard box. I figure that any fluctuations in the coldness of the fridge would have less effect on the insulin if it is wrapped (light in the 'fridge shouldn't be a problem since 'fridge lights turn off when the door is closed!). Can you get the pens in Australia? I don't know how practical it would be for you to order from one of the reputable Canadian online pharmacies, but they do have great prices. Shipping might be a problem! Do you need a prescription for insulin in Australia?

I hope that you will have a better day today and that Mil has happily taken up residence in your heart,

Hugs,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142

Well, you wanted Vyktor's numbers to come down. He's such a good kitty -- he heard you. You might want to get another test or two in this cycle just so you know where he's heading.

I might not leave the entire vial out for 10 min. twice a day. If you were to draw your shot, and leave the syringe out, it would probably be better. That way, you're not subjecting your entire insulin supply to constant variation in temperature. Also, don't keep the Lantus on the door of the refrigerator.

Again, my condolences over the loss of Mil.

I think what they gave me is actually cartridges to go in pens, they came in a box of 5 cartridges of 3ml each for $90 but I use syringes to draw it out rather than a pen.

I did need a prescription, first time I've ever had a prescription from a vet to fill at a chemist. From the reaction of the chemist I also think it's the first time they filled a vet prescription. Vyktor has his own computer file there now!

Doh! - I used to draw the shot up ten minutes early but then I read something about not preparing lantus shots in advance and a diabetic work colleague told me that he takes his out of the fridge about an hour before he uses it to let it warm up so I thought that was the better option. I should have known to ask here.

Don't worry I'm not going to bed unless I'm sure he's safe. I was so tired but that BG woke me up in a big hurry. Next test coming in 20 mins and we'll see where we go from there. He is a good kitty, he's trying to take my mind off Mil...

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 HELP

Do I start on the HC - 1 tsp - now or retest in 15 to 30 mins and hope he hits dose reduction levels first?

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

Have fed 25g normal food + 1 teaspoon HC he is ravenous do I let him eat his normal food or need to make him wait for another HC tsp in 15 mins?

Just gave another 25g of normal food

the teaspoon of hc should ward off a case of the hungries for now.
let's see where he's at in 15 - 20 minutes.

in the mean time, take a deep breath... or two or three. you're prepared and you're in control.
see you soon!

You are right

Taking deep breaths

Syrup out on bench

Getting dressed again just in case...

i'm getting better. well enough to stick by your side right now.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

You're doing great! Is Vyktor's usual nadir around +6 normally? Hopefully between the HC and his usual cycle, he'll come back up soon! I agree with others...between the new insulin (which is a GREAT thing) and his sensitivity to your emotional state (which sure says a lot about the bond he shares with you), your boy is a little extra-active. You're handling it fine.

Gee, Vyktor, if you wanted a reduction, you could have been a little less dramatic about it! ;)

when you get a minute... tell me how's vyktor acting?

He seems ok he was very demanding for food and didn't understand why I gave him such a tiny bit since he is usually free fed and I just refill the bowl anytime it's empty. I gave him 25g (1oz) of normal food after the 52 whereas if it hadn't been a low BG situation I would've filled his bowl. Then I saw the 43 and I'm afraid I did get a bit overexcited and gave him another 25g of regular food (so 2 oz all together) as well as his teaspoon of FF grilled.

Should I have withheld food even though he was demanding it?

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

usually we like to dole out food in small amounts just in case it takes awhile to bring numbers up. the reason is you don't want kitty's tummy to get too full... or worse yet... see kitty vomit.

but... i think you did just fine. we all react the same when seeing a low number... especially the first time. hey, i was a nervous wreck (but tried not to show it) the first time i saw a 70. over time you'll get used to lower numbers and better yet... you'll get a good idea how vyktor responds.

happy to hear vyktor is doing well. will be waiting for your next test number...

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

+6.45 BG 76

I wonder if this is the food or Mr L kicking in - do I wait half an hour to test now or another one in 15 mins?

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

I think it depends on the cat. Mikey has a HUGE appetite, and when he went low in the past, I haven't worried about him not wanting to eat if I fed him, and I found feeding some LC along with the HC minimized big spikes. The LC food can help a cat to steady out and surf a bit, so if he's willing to eat it, I'd give it, maybe not free-fed, but small amounts, especially as his numbers start to rise and stead out. ECID, and you know Vyktor best.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43HELP

nice bump! this is most likely the hc food you're seeing.
i'd retest in 30 minutes.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

i wouldn't feed him again til we see the results of the next test...

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

I agree; give his ears a break and grab another test in 30 minutes. This is one of the times when, if it were Mikey, I'd give a little LC to encourage him to stay there for a while.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

He just knocked back his post test treat so I think he's full for now - hopefully not too full to eat his old favourite canned cereal if he heads down again!

I am so glad this happened in my night - so it's your day time and you are there.

since this isn't mikey, it might be a good idea to see the next test results are before feeding again.
there's new insulin in the picture and the possibility of the old insulin having been compromised. at this point, we don't know how long this low number event will last.

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

Yep no more food until we see what the next test says. I just don't know how Vyktor reacts to these things as yet anyway this is the lowest he has ever been, biggest drop etc.

This does mean the old lantus was no good yes? There's no chance this could just be coincidence, i.e. do I throw that cartridge or keep it to test it again at a later date?

i'd say there's a real good chance the old insulin has lost some potency. whether it's "no good" or not... i don't know. there could be some efficacy left in it...

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

+7.25 70

He was looking at his food bowl again but I haven't given anything yet.

I'm thinking that the HC goes away?

Should I just give another 1 oz of regular food or maybe half that and then test again in another half an hour?

Or nothing he's not hanging around the food bowl he's back lying next to the couch

I lied, he's back at the food bowl

Re: 02/02 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76

i'd try giving him a teaspoon of his regular low carb food.
if he doesn't want it, please let me know.

Re: 2/2 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76 +7.25

eaten that and looking at me for more, he's not understanding why he's only getting a little bit, this is not within his experience! Do I let him have another tsp?

Re: 2/2 Vyktor PMPS 311 +4 142 +6 52 +6.25 43 +6.45 76 +7.25

sure, let him have another teaspoon of lc. then hold off on feeding til the next test.
