2/2 - Mr Kitty - Questions about leaving with sitter

Hi all!

I've mentioned in a few threads, I'm due with our 2nd child end of this month (which of course means could be next week...or into March).

My mother in law will be baby and cat sitting for us; although no experience with FD, she knows how to test and inject (and is tenacious enough to keep at it if the cat doesn't cooperate, thankfully!).

Question is what the heck to do with the dose in the meantime. Our 1st is 1 yr old and quite the ball of energy so MIL will have her hands full, and I don't want to overwhelm her with extra testing, potential low numbers, dose adjustments and all that.

I'm thinking I'll hold whatever dose I'm at next weekend until the baby comes? Is there any harm in doing that? He's high and I hate to keep him that way longer than necessary, but to me that's probably better than a potential emergency situation while we're gone.

That’s great that your MIL is willing to test and shoot. I’d opt fr him running higher as opposed to putting her in a position to need to test a lot and take care of your little one. You are going to be very busy with two in diapers! If Mr, K. decides to start going lower closer to your due date adjustments can be made and your MIL can even give a reduced dose, like a vacation dose while you are away.

Great, makes sense, thanks!

We wanted our kids close in age...it'll give me gray hairs for sure, but will be worth it when they're older. At least that's what I tell myself!

Mine were 14 months apart and I soon discovered it would have been easier if I'd had twins. It's very hard to explain to a 14 month old why he shouldn't use a wooden spoon and his baby brother as a drum....LOL

Good luck to you!!

Gosh that's a tricky one, not knowing exactly when

I'm thinking I'll hold whatever dose I'm at next weekend until the baby comes?

If the baby comes later rather than sooner, I'd hate to see Mr K in those pink and reds all that time, potentially 4 weeks or so, the longer he spends in a hyperglycaemic state, the more likely he is to develop insulin resistance which will in turn make it much harder for you to regulate him. If it were me I wouldn't want to waste time.
Equally when baby comes you don't want to be throwing your MIL in at the deep end.

I would suggest that another option would be to continue taking the dose up as per TR (he's clearly not hit a good dose yet).
If baby comes early, and it coincides with Mr K looking like he may be at a dose that is potentially going to take him into numbers that are going to need more monitoring, you could skip at that point to drain the depot, and reset at a lower dose.

If when baby comes, he's still in these same sort of numbers you might decide to just hold the dose, and take increases a little more slowly, depending on how the situation is evolving with MIL

Vacation doses/ pet sitter doses are something that we do regularly, though of course those are usually more predictable than baby arrivals.

They will be super close. Our girls are 15 months apart and while it was definitely chaos for awhile (at one point you will feel like all you do is pour juice lol) They are exceptionally close even now that they are adults with their own kids. It makes my heart feel good that they have each other. Enjoy it!

Shhhh everyone I'm just pretending it'll all be fine! They'll be 16/17 months apart...my daughter is very sweet, but just pure energy. She'll be trying to do everything with him and take him everywhere.

Thanks for the input! I'll continue on with TR for at least another week, then go from there.

Like Elise suggested, I'd think of adjusting the dose like a vacation dose. If you want to look at Gabby's spreadsheet, you can see what I did when I was traveling. Depending on what the dose is, I'd consider reducing so you're asking your MIL to draw up a dose that's on a line on the syringe (i.e., a full or half unit vs a quarter unit amount). If she's able to get a test somewhere around the middle of the cycle, that would also be reassuring for you both.

It can help to leave a sample syringe that's got some colored liquid in it for her to compare with or even take a photo and send it to her so she's got a close up picture of what the dose looks like. (We've had people who had someone caring for their cat and thought they were giving a a 0.5u dose and gave the cat 5.0u. Pictures help!) I'm not sure, though, if you'll be in a frame of mind to deal with these kind of last minute details.

If your MIL is computer savvy, you can always give her your password for FDMB. We're happy to help if necessary.

:joyful:
My brother and I are 16,months apart, as a kid it was great, we were close enough in age that we were often interested in similar things. I'm sure we gave our mum the run around, but she always said she thought it was easier having us close together.

(We've had people who had someone caring for their cat and thought they were giving a a 0.5u dose and gave the cat 5.0u. Pictures help!) I'm not sure, though, if you'll be in a frame of mind to deal with these kind of last minute details.

Ah that helps, thanks! It looks to be about a 0.25-0.5 reduction each time? And right back up by 0.25U when back (e.g. no waiting 6 cycles)? What about ketones? He's not exactly easy to test for those. I'm hoping to be home within 24-36 hrs, can't get out of hospitals fast enough lol

The colored liquid is great idea too. I have the print out from the forum explaining the 1/2 unit markings, but actual filled syringe is better.

Given that I was dropping the dose purposefully, I brought it right back up unless there was an indication not to. (I came home once to my cat in the 40s.) The amount I dropped the dose depended on how large my usual dose was. If you're going to be sticking with TR until you are off to deliver the baby, you may be giving a larger dose. You might need to reduce by a larger amount if you take dosing on a 0.5u increment into account. The issue here is Mr. Kitty's safety and your peace of mind.
