I think we got into some nice numbers after the PM shot. And I only mildly panicked at the +5 144!
Her AMPS of 244 is a bit lower than normal but I think it's okay? I hope so because I gave her the .75 again. She wouldn't eat, hope she eats in awhile. The not eating makes me very nervous, she just licks at the food then walks away. Finger feeding doesn't even work. She did this last week as soon as her numbers came down a little bit. I know it's a good sign that she isn't gobbling food, but, not eating with her shot bothers me, how do I know she will eat later....
The neighbor feeds stray and feral cats, most of them live in my yard, I have a shed and back room all fixed up with beds for them. One of the old boys who I was very attached to was killed by a dog yesterday. I'm so upset.

(((Julie)))

I'm so sorry about the feral kitty. That is horrible!!!

It's important that Eleanor eat; will she eat her food if you put some freeze dried chicken or some other kind of no/low carb treat on it? Many cats love Fortiflora.

That's great that she got to 144 so we may be getting a little closer to a good dose. The 244 today is a number probably close to renal threshold....she's safe at this number but she needs to eat and you'll need to check her by +2 to see what she's doing.

You're doing wonderfuL!!!

I don't have Fortiflora. Where can I buy that?
She ate about 5 bites of 9-Lives Chicken and Tuna, I tried putting some boiled chicken on it and she walked away. Should I not shoot if she won't eat?
This is how she was before she was diabetic, she ate very little.
I'll check at +2.

You can buy fortiflora at most vet offices, though it can be quite expensive that way. I usually order it for Zener online at Amazon. There may be some cheaper alternatives too, perhaps others will chime in. Zener was not a picky eater before FD but he ate dry kibble. It took months to make the transition to wet food and we could never have made it without sprinkling fortiflora on his food. It is a type of probiotic and supposedly has flavoring similar to dry kibble. He remains up and down with his appy and that is harder for us to deal with most of the time than high or low numbers.

The eating issue definitely worries us the most. We can do a little something about his BG numbers - too high, more juice & too low, more HC food or karo. But when he won't eat, it is very stressful. We went through a week back in January when he stopped eating all together (motility and nausea issues) and Liz syringe fed him until we got on some meds that helped sort everything out. That was really tough. We think back to that week when his numbers aren't so good, and it doesn't seem so bad.

We tried using freeze dried chicken powder (the stuff left in the bag after all the big pieces are gone) sprinkled on his food, but that did nothing for him. Neither did parmesan cheese (though our civvie cat LOVES it). The fortiflora was like magic though. :o

You are doing such a great job. It took me 3 months after Zener's diagnosis to get on FDMB, start testing, switch to lantus, make food changes and start to take control of this FD. You are way ahead of that!!! :-D

Julie: were you able to get a +2 and post in your subject line please? I peeked at your SS but it's not up to date ;-) :-D I know it's not always going to be so easy for you to do it but if you can, then we don't have to bug you for a number.

Well...she needs the insulin so hopefully you can figure out how to get her to eat.

Julie, so sorry to hear about that poor feral kitty today.

Daphne sometimes does that too, just licks and walks away. I keep putting the dish in front of her, and then if that doesn't work, I hold the dish and she eats it then. Also, I know its the opposite of what kitties are supposed to like, but Daphne likes her food cold, and if I mash it, she will just lick it, but if I put it into small chunks she will open her mouth wide to get the whole chunk. I keep a new can of food in the fridge all the time. Don't know if that would work for you, since most kitties like their food room temp.

Sorry about your kitty! So sorry for your loss...
Fortiflora is also available on line..Some vets do have it, but I think I got it on line, maybe petco, or some other such pet supply place may also have it--
Hand feeding works for us & also I put a tbs or 2 of food in a separate dish & put one on her cat condo where she goes to look outside, and one behind the couch--she eats these up as though they are
her secret stash  --I dont know why, but it is working for us..
Hope she eats! Hugs from us!

OH, that's so strange, I just read "also I put a tbs or 2 of food in a separate dish & put one" Roni…(sorry I can't get that Quote thing to work for me). Anyway, I found that if I just put a little bit in another dish she will lick it clean, instead of putting the whole 1/2 can in one dish. That is so funny, and I don't know why, but glad my Daphne isn't the only strange kitty that does that. I was going to mention that but I forgot about it until I read Roni's post.

Julie I may be wrong but I think you are more concerned that Eleanor is not eating at shot time rather than she is not eating at all. If that is all don't worry about it. Vyktor free feeds and he often doesn't eat with his shot, sometimes not for an hour or two later. Yesterday he was in low numbers (the sort that would have you hyperventilating at the moment!) and he didn't eat from his bowl at all after +2.5 until +10 when I put the bowl in front of him to make sure he wasn't completely off his food in the lead up to the PM shot. I know that had I been trying to make him eat all day he would not have been so interested in the bowl I put in front of him at +10. Cats are just like that the more you try and make them do something the less likely they are to do it! Unless you have reason to think she is off her food, e.g. she hasn't eaten for many hours like Vyktor did yesterday and then can't be tempted don't worry. However, I have also been finding that since I remove his food at +10 he is often very keen to eat just after his shot, are you removing Eleanor's food at +10?

I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your old boy, particularly under such tragic circumstances, you must feel devastated. He is very lucky to have had Chateau Julie to stay at but it does mean you get so attached to them. Big cyber hugs headed your way.
