Good morning World! Yesterday

AMPS 334

KT's still payin' for his sneaky ways yesterday afternoon - raiding the HC kibble. He seems to be feeling fine - he and Snow have already finished their daily wrestling round. KT's decided he doesn't like the freeze dried chicken treats anymore - or not much. Now I'm giving him a few pieces of EVO dry to satisfy the 'pokie treat'.

Lacey (ShihTzu drooler w/CHF) isn't coughing much at all - the lasix is working but she's not eating well. She hasn't eaten more than about a cup of food over 3 meals each day the last few days. The vet didn't seem overly concerned but I am....she's too old to not be supporting her body with good food.

Scruffy (cat w/CHF) is doing well but has started getting antsy being inside most of the time. If it's chilly, I don't want him getting cold and getting sick, his immune system isn't the best right now. He doesn't do much of anything when he's out but I hate seeing him laying on the damp sand or huddled up in one of my lawn chairs. I've got one placed in a protected corner where the sun hits early and stays until mid afternoon so it will be warm for him....if we ever SEE sun again....

The new neighbors are indeed adopting the little dumped pup from a few days ago. She works 2 jobs right now from 7am to 11pm but she's told her bosses she needs to change around her schedules so she can be home with him in the evenings. He's a beautiful pup with a wonderful playful happy personality - looks like a Blue Heeler/Husky mix, probably 3-4 months old. He's going to be fairly large. I threw him a couple of tennis balls yesterday, other neighbor bought him a squeaky toy - he has a ball playing with all of them. It's SO cute.

Hugs to all today - I HOPE I get to visit condos today!

What a great Whole Clan Report! :-D

KT, is it worth it it, really? That's a NO! I'm glad to hear Lacey and Scruffy are doing well. Scruffy's antsiness may be another indication of felling better. But MOM, I wanta go out an play! You're right, he needs to wait on the sun.

Have a good day.

Well, sort of the 'whole clan'....the ones with issues! I started to make it really long and update on ALL of them.... :-D Instead, I'll just do the BIG dogs.... :-D :-D

Chloe (aka 'Thunderbutt' drooler) is taking antibiotics for an ear infection she gets about this time every year. Vet says allergies cause it to start.

Star, Chloe's sister, is her normal happy wonderful smiley self - our 'BB Dog' altho she's not as big as most black labs and has the cutest little head instead of the clunky lab head. Her only health problem we've ever had was when she pinched her toe between 2 boards on her deck and got a blood blister. Vet thought she had a broken center toe but when I got her home, she stepped on something and burst the blister. After that healed, she's been fine!

Harley - we know where Harley's parents lived and thought the Dad was a lab/shepherd mix. We just learned that the Dad is actually a 'Korean Jindo'. I'd never heard of them - here's a Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Jindo_Dog

HUGS!

Hi guys .. sometimes those kibble raids just aren't worth the end result are they KT? Let's see if you can bring this down some alright? I hope you guys get to see some sun soon .. it's shining strong here right now and I feel totally energized! Have a great weekend!

Question please!

Scruffy has been licking and eating dirt/sand the last few days. I thought he was eating new grass shoots coming up but I definitely know now it's the sand (all our 'dirt' is sand). I googled it, I most often find that means the cat is anemic and looking for iron. He's on enalapril heart med and lasix so this makes sense.

Will FortiFlora provide that to him?

I can't answer about the FortiFlora -- I use it as a flavor enhancer as needed.

Hooray for the new neighbors adopting the puppy!

Are you getting any sleep, missy, with that herd of fur babies you're caring for?

I don't think so but here are the ingredients: nimal digest, Enterococcus faecium, L-ascorbyl- 2-polyphosphate (source of Vitamin C), Vitamin E supplement, beta-Carotene, zinc proteinate, taurine, salt, manganese proteinate, ferrous sulfate, copper proteinate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite. C-4583. Contains a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms.

It does contain iron (ferrous sulfate) which is the iron used in some human vitamins. You might want to check this out with your vet.

Licking dirt can be a sign of anemia, but it could be a behavioural thing, or nothing at all. Anemia can be pretty serious. Supplementing iron (and B vitamins) may be helpful for some types of anemia, but it really should not be done without checking with your vet first. If anemia is present, you might also see weakness, shortness of breath, and very pale gums and ear tips. I don't think that Forti Flora would contain enough iron to be curative for anemia (if present), but I don't think it would do any harm. It is a pretty mild probiotic and flavour enhancer. If he likes it, it may satisfy his urge to lick up something sandy.

THANK YOU Sienne and Linda!!!!

This has just started over the last 4-5 days, neither of us has ever seen him doing it before. I don't notice that he's showing weakness. He seems to be breathing as well now as he was last week also. I'll have to check his gums but his ears are pink as usual. I thought maybe he was trying to clean his tongue first. He just did his 'happy cat' run across the back yard, up the big tree, down the big tree, up on propane tank and up to high fence corner perch.

What test checks for anemia? I can't afford to have a full panel done...it's raid the penny jar here already and it's only the 17th...

His behavior sounds completely healthy! You would probably do a CBC to check for anemia (complete blood count). The vet could do a quick PCV in his office (packed cell volume) which gives a reading similar to hematocrit. The PCV should be less expensive. Since he is acting normally you could probably just keep an eye on him.

Linda,
I had to laugh at "keep an eye on him"....he's SO tired of me 'keeping an eye on him'. He's always done what he wants to do when he wants to - had open cat door except at night. Now I watch him most of the time if he's not in his room with the cat door shut and won't let him do some things...like drink the 'crappy' water from the feral's bowl outside. He sometimes gives me a lecture using his LOUD Siamese voice but I just tell him when he gets a job and pays for his heart meds, I'll listen to his complaints. :-D

Thanks again!

I wouldn't give fortiflora to any cat with issues. I'm sorry but I don't like it.

Regarding your dog.... did you join the CHF group that I mentioned? Heart dogs have a very poor appetite for some reason. Its a common thread on that group. We danced to get Nike to eat. Feed her what she will eat and try and keep it low sodium. Cooked chicken breast, french toast with a bit of syrup, kibble soaked in home made no sodium beef broth, you will get a ton of tips on the heart group. I had to rotate food often to keep Nike interested. On a really bad run I had to give her chicken nuggets without the breading. She just wouldn't eat a thing. There are a lot more tips on the group than I can remember. I haven't been able to go back on it since losing Nike. I can't even open the digest that I get. So I'm sorry I can't go in and look for you, but please join. They are truly wonderful there.

Karrie,
Would you post the link to that group again? I went there once but didn't join and didn't bookmark it. I've searched my postings over and over and can't find the link....  I'm sorry....bad bean again...

She did eat quite well today, plenty enough to make MamaBean very happy - I think SHE'S reading KT's condo too.
