In the wee hours of the morning, Gus decided that he'd rather eat without any help from me. He woke me up and lead me downstairs to the kitchen where he assumed his familiar stance in front of the food pantry. He had about 1/2 can of FF Medleys. Loved it!! Slept very quietly and restfully for the rest of the night. This morning, he was waiting in the kitchen with all his civvies for their breakfast. I can see that he's still weak, but such an improvement! I'm off to the vets to pick up some pain and anti-nausea meds.

Re: 2/17 Gus AMPS 317 Eating On His Own

The only thing better than Gus' improvement is the continued support from all of our family on this forum. He tires very quickly and is eating much less than normally. I expect his appetite will get better as his illness resolves. He's not looking too perky right now but that's understandable. Momma's not lookin' too perky either!!! All for the love of a furry purry kitty.

Don't think I've posted on your condo before but just couldn't help myself today. What wonderful news!!! Although Gus is still very weak and tired, just the desire to eat is HUGE! Hang in there, one of these days YOU will get a bit of rest yourself! You are doing awesome!!

Re: 2/17 Gus AMPS 317 Eating On His Own

So glad to hear he's eating. It will probably take a couple few days before he gets back to his normal eating habits, but how awesome that he's eating!!! Gus is so lucky to have you!!!

Re: 2/17 Gus AMPS 317 Eating On His Own

It is great news that Gus is interested in eating on his own. Keep a close eye on his food and water intake, and don't hesitate to supplement him with additional food by syringe if needed.

Did the vet mention anything about his potassium levels? Low potassium can cause weakness.

You mentioned the high white blood cell count yesterday. That is certainly suggestive of infection, even though the preliminary culture report came back negative. Bear Man had chronic Pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and he never cultured positive. It is possible for the bacteria to burrow deep into the kidney. In any event, it sounds like the antibiotics are helping Gus.

You also mentioned yesterday about using pain meds for chronic pain for acro-related pain. While Buprenorphine is most highly recommended for the pain of pancreatitis (and also useful for pain related to urinary tract infections), the acro moms seem to favour using Tramadol or Gabapentin for chronic acro pain. Just something to consider for the future, if you find that Gus responds well to pain control.

yaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

I hope Gus gets his strength back easily. One thing I still remember from Lucy's recovery from illness is that once she started eating, everything else started to click all at once. I hope it will be the same for Gus.

Karrie, you've been such a huge source of useful information for me. Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and knowledge with me so that Gus was able to benefit from it. I got Bup from the vet today and it seems to have provided Gus with some relief from his pain. Some people would think I'm crazy, but I think I can see the absence of pain in his face. He stretches out to sleep instead of in a little ball in the corner. I'll be hanging out with my favorite patient for the rest of the night. Going to enjoy some relaxing time together. I'm saying prayers of thanks for all of you.

Hi Bev and Gus,
Rusty and I want to join the celebration. Yay for eating! :RAHCAT Yay for feeling more energetic! :RAHCAT Yay for sleeping stretched out! :RAHCAT 3 cheers for Mamabean :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

We are continuing to send healing vines, good thoughts, and lots of hugs.

Ella & Rusty

I'm very glad Gus is eating and even happier that he's getting some relief from the pain meds. Pancreatitis is supposed to be very painful -- why wouldn't you see the relief in his face?

Oh -- and some HC for that green!

Another awesome update. The gang here is really up to speed on pancreatitis. Its something diabetic cats deal with frequently. I've learned a lot on here about it. I'm so glad your vet is on board with the pain meds. I bet he's feeling so much better. Give him a hug from me - or at least a gentle kiss.

aw, this is the best news of the day! so glad to hear our little buddy is feeling better. punkin did well when i gave him the bupe - he was sappy purry, looked kinda stoned. i think it worked well, though.

sorry i'm so late checking in tonight - i spent a couple of hours this afternoon trying to get my computer working again before i gave up and abandoned it, then we went to our nephew's event with Engineers without Borders and got home late.

looks like Gus is going to have a wonderful snooze tonight. that drop in BG might be from pain-relief too. when i gave punkin the bupe his BG dropped dramatically. do you get to have some of that bupe so you sleep well tonight too? ;-) :-D
