Georgia and Simon (GA)

Member Since 2010
We are all good here today. Simon has all P's in place and is very happy since he was able to push his sister, Cleo, away from her dish and eat the rest of her food. I usually watch him closely so this doesn't happen, but I was busy getting ready for work and forgot to monitor Simon. At least Cleo eats the same lc food as Simon so no harm done. Thanks for all the advice yesterday concerning my next vet visit. I am bringing Simon to the vet in 2 weeks. I'm going to ask the vet about how he does the dental and any suggestions on what to ask are appreciated. It sounds like different vets do the dentals differently, using different types of anesthesia and monitor them differently. I'm a little confused about what is the safest for Simon.

Prayers to Claudia and Rocket and all the kitties going through difficult times. We are here for you!

Simon you greedy little thing, stealing your sister's food.
Hope the extra food doesn't spike his #'s. But I'm sure he'll do well since it's LC.

Nice AMPS Simon. You will feel so much better when you discuss this with your vet. Ask what they use and how they monitor diabetic kitties. Ask about the after-dental procedure and ask what meds they use.
I might as well mention two things that you do NOT want to be used. Metacam and Convenia. http://fdlibrary.yuku.com/topic/160/Con ... d-warnings

They have very bad possible side effects. It is much better for pain to use bupe and for an antibiotic, use Clavamox. Clavamos is given orally. The Convenia is a shot that is supposed to last 2 weeks...very convenient for the caregiver but once the shot is administered, if there are any side effects, there is nothing one can do to get the med out of the kitty. It is just too risky. Much is written about both drugs. There are alternatives that do not have the risks.

Now, if I were you, I would call the vet office now and just ask what pain meds they prescribe for dentals as a rule and also what anitbiotics they prescribe. That way, you will be able to post the answer here and have a discussion on what everyone thinks about it, okay?

My vet uses Convenia and cannot understand why I do not want it. But, it is written on our files to not use that...I prefer giving them the oral drops of Clavamox and it works out just fine for us. I believe it also comes in pill form. If they prescribe pills, the Greenies have an allergy formula that is made from duck and is low carb. It is not available everywhere, so you will have to look for it.
IOt sounds confusing, but it really isn't. And it's best to be informed, so maybe call them up, k?

Re: 2/16 Simon AMPS 111

Good morning! Just popping in to see how Simon is doing. Great AMPS, and so much useful information in today and yesterday's condo.

Chaos steals his brother's food too; I have to put it up when civvie is finished eating. Chaos will eat anything he can get his little face into.

I hope you have a great Wednesday and that the vet is willing to provide all the info you need. I'll be checking back to see how it turns out.

Great AMPS for Simon. You've gotten a lot of good advice from Pat about the dental. I can understand your worry as I was the same way. Everything went smoothly with Maggie's dental. Have a nice day.

Pat, thank you so much for all the valuable information. I am definitely going to call the vet and ask them what they use so I can get everyone's feedback. I'll post once I talk to the vet. He is going out of town today so I may have to wait until late next week to talk with him.

Thank you to everyone for your support and advice. I couldn't do this without you.

The vet techs would probably be able to give you that information Georgia...you could try to ask them if you call the office so you will have a heads up before you speak with the vet. That would give you plenty of time to research what they use....

Thank you for asking Georgia. Maverick has a slight, not so fresh smell in his breath. His vet visit is tomorrow and I'm going to ask about his teeth.
