Getting ready to print of spreadsheet for today's vet appointment. I see this am Morpheu is speading extra time on the scratch pad. Have to wonder if he somehow knows and is sharpening his claws to show the vet just how much better he feels. Will post later today with details of the vet visit.

Good luck at the vet today - I hope the appt goes well.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone. Morpheus weighed in at 9lb 4 oz. (weighed just a hair over 5lb at diagnosis). Vet glucose was 72. Vet says that the diabetes was secondary and due to his parasite and infections issues (I agree, this turned around really fast). He is not happy that his blood sugar is so low  . He wants him around 150 and told me to free feed and put some kayo on his food :o :o :o (ummm ..NO) He didn't look at the spreadsheet but did acknowledge that his glucose and my readings were close enough to make decisions based on my readings. (thank you very much) I did tell him that I have him on a low carb wet food and that kind of food was now considered the standard of care for diabetic cats by the Animal Hospital Association people (gave him the printed article) We talked about lo-carb vs his wet
W-D with complex higher carb. He did take the article so maybe as least that recommendation will change. He wants to see Morpheus next week because the head of the practice will be in and he would like to show off Morpheus and have me talk to him. OK, (so maybe he WAS listening to me ) All in all a good visit but his idea about food and raising his blood sugar is a thanks but no thanks. My thought is that in 3-4 weeks his pancreas may not be as delicate and a move up to a slight higher carb may be ok but he has been on a 6 gram or less carb diet, he doesn't act hypo, so why mess with success. Any thoughts on diet?? Am I keeping Morpheus too tight on his glucose??
Once again, many many thanks to everyone for all the advice over that past month. You all have been such a blessing :RAHCAT

Oh I think your food choice and his diet is just fine! My vet too thinks that my aim for <100 BG is way too low, and is more than pleased when I report 200's. she too pushes the WD, and MD. uh noooooooooooooo, not going to happen. I wouldn't change anything.

I am glad that the vet visit went well - do hope he was listening. nice in a way that they want Morpheus back next week so the head guy can meet and greet, Good luck! YAY!

WOOOOOHOOOOO What an awesome update. I can't believe how much he's gained. What an amazing sight that must be seeing him that thin and then up to 9lbs.

You should be very proud of both of you. Can't wait to hear how next week goes.

Maverick's potential new vet thinks he is too low right now and should be off insulin. Um, no LOL. Not expecting to change his mind. Just need a vet or puffer prescriptions and emergencies. But it sounds like you have a vet you might be able to educate. Great job.

Great vet report.
I don't agree with your vet as far as feeding higher carb food. Does he know what Morpheus's normal bg was before he was dx.

I think you have done a great job!!

Day 9...woo hoo.

Nice vet report. I hope when you go in next week they do not intend to charge for the visit. As far as the BGs go. I agree with Miriam. None of us know what the average/normal bg was prior to diagnosis. There are many cats that have a bg lower then 50. Tuffy will drop into the 30s some days.

I also believe the vets do not know much about nutrition in general for any species. On diagnosis, prior to finding FDMB, my vet put Tuffy, and all the others, on DM dry with the statement, "I have had many cats go into remission on this diet". I have switched all the kitties to wet food.

I hope you succeeded in educating your vet. Gives us all a glimmer of hope for future diagnosed diabetic kitties.

Miriam- we have no idea was his basline sugar would be. Looking back, I think he was sick the minute I found him. At his first vet check (with a different vet) they told me his sugar was high (don't know how high-they didn't say) but that he felt is was due to him being dehydrated and abandoned and having paracites. This was back in July.

Didn't want to give the impression that meeting the "boss man" was a big deal. Don't think I conveyed that right. "boss man" ,"head Guy" ect are terms of endearment for the head of the practice. He is normally out with the large animal calls. He did work with Morpheus during the DKA hospitalization. I want to high school with him (had a few of the same class and band with him but DEFINATELY not the same social circle :-D ) I had always thought his practice was only large animal but found out through someone else that he has been doing small animals with some other vets on board. He is having a staff meeting and will be at the practice next week and today's guy thought that he would enjoy seeing Morpheus again as they originally talked together about his case and were debating about recommending euthanizing him but they decided to try something since I was such a pitful sight and a former school mate. I hope that I get the chance to really talk to him about the diabetes management. In the meantime I am grateful I got a second chance with Morpheus even though it appears he has spent 8 of his 9 lives.

I should rephrase my question......I did not mean to imply that your vet should know what his bg was before dx. Most of us really don't know what our cats normal bg was before FD. I am not sure if that is part of regular blood work. For all your vet knows his normal bg could have been in the 40's.
