WCR: another nice run of numbers for mocha last night. This morning I was greeted by mocha and her "baby" a stuffed animal peter got for me years ago that is bigger then her head that she will carry around when feeling good. It is always a nice start to the day. Later on if mochas numbers allow me I am going to see my uncle who isn't doing so well. Peter is headed off to the drs this morning in hopes of feeling better soon. Have a great day guys!

Great AMPS this morning Mocha after a wonderful cycle too! That is so cute with the stuffed animal....sounds so cute the way you describe it! Hope you have a good day today Devon and healing vines to your Uncle and to Peter...

Re: 2/15 mocha amps 125

Mocha carrying her baby around is a cute picture. That is was we call Milo's brother's frog. It is his baby and he will carry it around the house. I usually will put it back in the "toy" spot, just to come home to find it somewhere else. Great start to the day and hope Mocha surfs for ya!

Re: 2/15 mocha amps 125

Good Morning Devon. Miss Mocha Jo has had some gorgeous green numbers lately. See what happens when you put a threat in her condo? We all know our kitties read these.
Love the stuffie story. Does she talk while she carries it? Checks does that at night. He yowls while carrying the stuffie around.
Hope Peter's doc visit goes well, and it's only a cold hanging on.
Have a good visit with your uncle. Will your aunt and the baby be there?

Re: 2/15 mocha amps 125, +5 42, had to take twix to vet

well what started out as a "normal" day around here turned hectic pretty quickly .. Peter brought home a bouquet of flowers for me yesterday, roses and lillies. He bought those specifically because they did not have baby's breath in them, twix's favorite. I had the flowers put up in a cupboard all night and then this morning I pulled them out of the cupboard and set them on top of the fridge. I knew mocha is physically unable to jump that high and I knew twix was sound asleep in her basket in the back room.

Well I decided I would get up and get showered/dressed so I could check mocha and be on my way to see my uncle. I was in the bathroom for maybe a half hour at the MOST and when I walked out of my bedroom I can see into my kitchen and saw twix up on the fridge next to the flowers. I clapped my hands and she jumped down and I ran out there to see if she had chewed off any of the flowers and noticed one half of a lilly flower on the countertop. I checked out online if these flowers were dangerous to cats and of course, they are VERY dangerous to cats! So I called the vets office and they said they would call me back but by this time I had read enough that I knew I needed to get twix up there asap. So I called my SIL who lives next door thankfully and she drove us up there. At this point I was hysterical because the news is so grim online ...

Anyways, they grabbed her carrier from me and the wait began .. so we waited, and waited .. then the vet came out and told me that she could not get twix to throw up, so they had to use charcoal in her to get it to absorb the poison. She was also put on fluids and had some bloodwork done to determine kidney damage. After about an hour the blood work came back and everything was normal. The vet wants to keep twix there all day and on fluids to help her out and then tomorrow morning I have to take her back for more bloodwork.

It was an exhausting morning that's for sure. I left mocha with more then her normal amount of MC food at +3 and got back at +5 to find all her food gone and she was at 42. I fed gravy and will re test in a minute.

I asked the vet if this is something now that we should have checked on twix periodically, to check for damage, but she didn't seem to have an answer. Does anyone know anything about this? The lilies can cause acute renal failure very quickly from what I gathered.

 WoW! How very scary... (((Twix))) glad to hear is ok, not sure on the follow up or what to do, but am thinking of you.

And please share what you find. How scary and good catch.

Someone posted recently on a very similar experience on FDMB recently. I begged DH not to bring home any more cut flowers. Ever. Only flowers that stay outside in pots that get planted right away (not go into the house).

((((((Trix))))))))

((((Devon))))) You have so much on your plate and now this. I'm glad you caught her though and got her to the vet so quickly. And I'm especially glad that Twix is okay. And great catch on Mocha! Holy Cow! What a day you've had!

Re: 2/15 mocha pmps 137

Well mocha gave us a nice pmps after a long day ... I'm surprised she wasn't higher since I dropped a load of medium carb food in her bowl before taking off with twix then finding her low at 42 and gave a huge glob of gravy ...

I picked twix up this afternoon around 3:30 .. after we got home she threw up huge amounts of jet black charcoal .. I called the vet but she said she felt as though it was just stress and not from the lily since she had been fine at the vets all day. There was a lily petal in the largest pile (sorry to be gross) She ate a decent amount for dinner and seems to be settling in quite nicely tonight. Tomorrow morning peter drops her off at 8:30 for another round of blood work and I will pick her up in the afternoon.

This afternoon when I picked up twix we got on the subject of mocha being diabetic. Well, I had never seen this vet before (I think they rotate from their other office) but anyways, she asked how mocha was doing and I said fine and we got into her numbers and how lately they have been doing real good, probably averaging around 70 (maybe, I don't know, I'm really bad at math) but this vet went crazy on me .. told me that is to low, I could kill mocha with numbers like that, her numbers shouldn't be doing what they are doing (from high's to lows) that I am making FD way more complicated then it needs to be, that I shouldn't have to use high or medium carb foods, she should be on a low carb high protein diet .. I mean, she really came at me .. It wasn't in a nasty way, but I felt as though I wasn't presenting myself or this website very well. She gave me the "online help" spiel even though I told her vets do visit this board as well as vet techs but there was nothing I could do at that point .... She ended the conversation by telling me she had recently gone to a FD convention, and if I ever wanted to simplify what we are doing to mocha then to talk things over with her. I just feel like a real bad cat mom today.

Re: 2/15 mocha pmps 137

Vets have issues with low numbers because they are afraid they will get sued if a cat under their care has a hypoglycemic crisis. Since you are not following the vet's advice, they don't have a liability. I would suggest that the vet go through the records of cats they've seen at their practice and look at what the BG values are for nondiabetic cats. I bet they average out to around 70. Silly vet.

Great numbers for Mocha! I bet you will never have lillies in the house again.
