Since Monday, Gus hasn't been doing well at all. His appetite is less and he's drinking a lot more than usual. He has also taken to staying under the couch. He does this whenever he's feeling sick. We are taking him to the vet this afternoon. I'm thinking along the lines of CRF. I know Marje is an expert on this. If you're out there, Marjie, would you stop by Gus' condo. I woulkd like to know what I should say/ask at this app't. Our regular vet is not working today, but the vet that works part time is there and she's ok. Oh, and Gus has been vomitting from time to time, but has been eating smaller meals. I'm going to look in the FDMB archives for some info, but would really appreciate hearing from anyone who can guide me.

Hi Bev, Marje works on Wednesdays. Maybe if you send her a private message, she might see that. Sending eating vines to Gus and you.

Bev i'm so sorry to hear Gus isn't feeling well, i hope the vet can figure out what's wrong with him and its nothing major. (((((((((Gus)))))))))))

And a bump.

Thanks everyone. It helps just to know that you're all out there. I have to wait another hour before I can bring him in to the vet. Just looking at him laying there breaks my heart.

I'm not familiar with Gus' history, so I am not sure why you suspect CRF specifically. Drinking more water could be a symptom of CRF, but it could also indicate other things. For a kitty who has been feeling ill, vomiting, and has a poor appetite, in addition to drinking more water and hiding, you would probably want to get a full blood panel including all of the renal values, and perhaps also a check on the thyroid function, electrolytes, and CBC. You might consider a fPLI test for pancreatitis. You would want a urinalysis, and perhaps also a urine culture performed on a sterile urine sample obtained by cystocentesis. Check ketones of course. The vet should evaluate the cat on physical exam for things like dehydration, fever, or abdominal pain. If renal disease is suspected, the vet might also want to check the blood pressure.

Oh poor Gus. I really have no advice, but I can tell you a little thing about my vet telling me how to get a urine sample at home….take out kitty litter and put in the stuff you put in fish tanks, and the urine just goes to the bottom and then can be collected. I don't know how sterile that would be, probably not much, but I just wanted to tell you that.

Good luck Gus baby, I'm sending white light and healing vines.

Moonie just had similar symptoms & she was tested for hyper Thyroid( was negative), but those symptoms could be many things, or maybe stomach issues--Moonie is now getting pepcid when she feels like that, or is vomiting-Dont make yourself crazy like I do before you have a reason--I totally am like you with breaking heart & all--This could be a very simple thing--Hugs of comfort & Prayers for complete Healing for Gus!!

I'd expect that the vet would do a full blood/urine workup. I suspect CRF only because that came to mind. Gus could have any number of other conditions. I guess that I just put my thoughts and fears into words. My feelings aren't based on any facts, just worry. Gus' sister was dx'd with hyperthroidism EXACTLY one week ago today! Her improvement has been awesome, she looks and acts so happy. She'll be retested for thyroid levels one week from today. So, I know that there could be any number of other things wrong with my big man. I should have just kept my musings to myself. It's my nature to worry a subject to death before having facts. Because of that, I subject myself to far more suffering and sadness than is necessary. Thanks for all the encouragement. I'll be sure to post after our visit. I just wish that our vet were there today. My husband says he wants to take Gus back tomorrow regardless. He just trusts our doc so much.

awww .. poor gus .. poor momma! I am a stress-er/worrier by nature and can always come up with a 100 different things that could be wrong before I'm actually given a diagnosis .. I hope the vet visit brings you the answers you are looking for, so gus can get back to being 100%!

I wasn't questioning your suspicions at all! Since I am not familiar with Gus' history, I wasn't aware if there had been previous indications of CRF. It does always come to mind when there is increased thirst. I am hoping that the vet can figure out what is going on, and get Gus feeling better soon.

Bev, sending some good thoughts and vines for a good Vetty visit today for Gus. Glad you got him in today. It's such a worry when our babies get sick. Hope it's nothing serious. Hugs.

It's good to hear from you Bev!!

My first thought was pancreatitis. A spec fPLI will let you know if that's what's up. Obviously, blood work will let you know if there's an infection. Make sure there's no dental stuff. It could be something as simple as a stomach flu.

Is Gus on any pain meds? Many of the acro kitties are getting gabapentin for pain related to the acro. That may be something to consider.

Bev:

I sent you a PM. Sorry I didn't see this but on work days, I don't even turn on the computer. Mike also went out to run some errands before he posted....he just called me and told me he saw your PM.

Sending Gus many healing vines. I do tend to agree with Sienne that this might be something which could come on a little faster. CRF (or CKD) is usually more gradual....weight loss, PU/PD, inappetance....but over time....not quickly. Of course, it's possible that since those symptoms are very similar to FD, that it was just not apparent there might be something else going on. If it's not pancreatitis, my second thought might be something acute with the kidneys.

Please let us know when you get back. Linda (Bear Man) made some great suggestions. I PM'd you that if you scan and PM me the results of the tests, I can help you sort through what is significant and not. I have found that vets often tend to overlook things that really shouldn't be....even great vets.

(((Bev))). We're all here for you and Gus.

punkin and i are sending healing thoughts to our favorite Gus! we'll be watching for your reply and hoping for good news. i know how hard it is to see your little buddy sick. :YMHUG:

Don't forget the his acro status; acros have issues in addition to normal feline diabetics and non-diabetics.

((((Bev & Gus))))
Fingers and paws crossed that whatever it is will be very treatable. We are thinking of you and sending lots of healing vines to your boy.

Ella & Rusty

I agree with Linda's post on what to check - especially when a cat "ain't doing right".

Good luck and hope everything is okay. Hugs for you and Gus.

Everyone has been such a positive support for us today. The vet will be doing full labs on his urine and blood. Running a little fever along with all this, so ...the labs will tell the tale. Results will be in either tomorrow evening or Friday AM. Thanks again to our FDMB family.

Bev --

If an infection is present and Gus is off his food, please try to check on his ketones. Ketones can develop even is numbers are low. Getting a urine test is just a matter of prevention especially until you get Gus' labs back.

Sending healing thoughts out to Gus. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry until you know what you're dealing with. You have all my hopes that it's something manageable. Good luck!

Sending Healing Vines to sweet Gus & Hope his labs show a simple infection that will be easily treated--
Hugs from us! Feel better Gus!!!
