What the heck, Cobb?? Why are you throwing me these high numbers after that beautiful surf of blue??

Cobb did dip into the blue last night but then popped way up this morning. Would today be a good day to try the R? Or is he bouncing? It's early so I know no one is really up yet and I don't want to give any without people being up to help!

We don't really have anything to do today, Matt is home to help with the baby so I have the time to watch Cobb. Let me know!

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 - R trial???

Unfortunately, I have no experience with R, so I can't help you with that. I hope that someone who does have knowledge comes by soon to help you. I hope that it helps to bring down his #s. Try and relax, and have a good Caturday!

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 - R trial???

I can help you Suzanne. I've been using R in Gracie for over a year although haven't used it lately.

If you want to use it, I'd need to know where he is now on his BG. If he's gone up, we can give it a shot but if he's coming down, best to wait and let him clear on his own.

Standing by.

We're going to check in 10 minutes. That will be at +3. Standby for his BG.

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

Hmmm...he's not going up. Let me look at his SS again and see if he has any pattern when he does this.

Your thoughts?

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

My thoughts? I don't know. I'm not good at seeing the patterns in his spreadsheet. He had a great run of blue a few days ago, and then started climbing with the new dose. He had been consistently in the yellows with an occasional pink number.

I do know that he moved on me this morning with his shot and his fur was a little wet. So I know he didn't get the full dose.

Do you think it's best to wait until we see something like last night when he was in the blue and then give the R at the first pink number that registers?

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

He's flat and I know you don't want to see him in pink all day. Yesterday, he was also flat between AMPS and +3 and then came down.

Honestly, I know he has a long way to come down but for the first time use, I'd have been less conservative if he'd been going up. Using r allows you to stop numbers from going any higher if they start zooming up. I think he had his zoom last night but no on wants to give R at PM +7.5 ;-)

What is your comfort level?

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

We cross posted but my tendency would be to wait. I think it's wise to be careful with R and especially when you use it the first time, to give it on the fast rise.

nailbite_smile Not sure. I know I can do it, and I can monitor it. But I could make the argument, see how he does through +6, and then if he's still high, see if we can use the R to bring down his PMPS and let the Lantus work off that number - so we see a good Lantus drop, not necessarily a R drop. Does that make sense?

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

Yes because there is a chance that giving it now could also overlap his nadir.

We can see where he is later in the cycle...he might just steadily slide all day. You don't want to see a big drop with the R; usually 50-100 mg/dL. If he's trying to clear a bounce and you give R, you could get a speeding train which is not good but I know you are aware of that.

R can bust up those counterregulatory hormones and open the door for Lantus to do its job. I've found that while I might get a small response to the R, once the hormones clear out and the levemir can work, I see lower numbers in the subsequent cycle and sometimes fairly low but then any high yellow number is high for Gracie so I doubt Cobb would get as low as she can.

I'll check in later today and see where he is around +6. Is that ok?

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

That sounds good! We're going to go out for a bit, but will probably be back around then!

Thank you!!!!

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 - R trial???

Hi Suzanne,

Good luck with what ever tactic you decide to use.

I have found R to be very helpful, but only at the beginning of his very steep rises, which was usually +9 or +10. I feel it did help with Lantus to be more effective (especially if my vial was slightly compromised) but it did not fix the fact that Ole needed more Lantus and he is not at the right dose.

There you go, for what it's worth. I believe you are pretty aware of how we use R, but I thought I'd chime in anyway.

Have a great Saturday!

Come on down Cobb! Between you and Ole, you're giving me a pink crink (in the neck). I know, sometimes I reach far... hahaha!

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 +5.75 187

Thanks Rebekah! I follow Ole's R adventures pretty closely because I figure Cobb will need it at some point.

It does not look like that will be today. This cat likes to keep me guessing and throwing around unexpected numbers! 187 @ 5.75 so we'll table the R discussion until another day.

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 +5.75 187

Wow......I like it!!!!

So this is great info to have for Cobb when you are contemplating the use of R. It's the same I do with Gracie; if I'm going to use it, I test her right before I shoot and the number has to be up from the last one by more than meter variance.

Go Cobb!!!!!!

Re: 2/15 Cobb AMPS 389 +3 355 +5.75 187

nice drop, mr cobb.

that's likely because the threat of R has been introduced and you're now having it in the house. :-D

i'd go for the start of the big rise as well for the first time trying it.

Yet more evidence that our kitties read our condos!

I'm glad to see Cobb settled the argument for you with no fuss. Hopefully you'll have a nice blue surf until PMPS. Go Cobb!

Cobb came down nicely today. I'll take the mid-200s over what I was seeing (and anticipating)!

Unrelated question...I'm sure we all have some marked areas of our houses, thanks to our fur babies. Cobb has pretty much ruined the rug in our formal living room, although we've managed to get the smell out of there. I found this product at Petsmart that came with a black light that finds the soaked in urine. Here's my question...I can smell cat urine in our den. I have used the black light. I have gotten down on my hands and knees and put my nose in the carpet. I have had Matt on his hands and knees smelling. And I had my mom smell around. I cannot find the spot where he peed, at all! I have a general vicinity, but it's like it's in the air, and that can't be. How can I find this spot? The furniture hasn't been moved do it can't be under anything. I have to find it. I can't have Matty crawling on cat pee, and it's embarrassing when we have company over - although my mom says she can rarely smell it and I'm more sensitive to it. Help!

Check on the walls. He may have sprayed against a wall and if you're only looking on the carpet, you may miss the spot.

Re: 2/15 Cobb PMPS 250 +2 314

Cobb sure does love his food spikes! I've noticed his BG overall tends to be higher when I feed him the 4% whitefish flavor, but he has a bigger +2 food spike when I feed him the turkey and giblets flavor mode, right?

We just had a nice grooming session. One of the best we've had in quite a while! When we were at the vet in April a lot of Cobb's fur was matted because he wasn't grooming. Most of the mattes are gone now that has started grooming again but I still have to help a bit. I just combed out a ton of hair from his backside so hopefully that will help with his dandruff problem back there.

Can anyone help with my above question on the urine smell??

Sorry about the pee smell. Is there underlay under the rug? Sometimes you have to go down a layer to get the smell. I find that the Nature's Miracle Advanced Formula works really well. Did you check walls or vertical surfaces with the black light as Sienne suggested?

Good to hear that Cobb fur is getting so much better and that he likes being combed. Time to head on down Cobb.

Wendy is right....it can actually get through any pads and even into the concrete. A friend of mine bought a house where the woman had had cats that peed on the carpet. They pulled up the carpet and pad and still smelled pee. They had to treat the concrete to get rid of the smell.

i've had great luck with a carpet cleaning company that uses steam to clean and sucks everything back out. they will pretreat specifically for pets - and they also use the black light to check for spots - and they will come back if the smell or stain returns. ours is just a locally owned company. the extraction part is important.

you might've missed Sienne's post above - looks like you were both posting at the same time. he might've not only sprayed the walls, but the sides of the furniture as well. punkin never sprayed inside our house, but i saw him spray several times outside when he was marking his territory while we were on walks. backed right up to shrubs and let fly! wowser, punkin!
