Good Morning, LL and Happy Valentines Day!
I have 2 different appts for Blackie today. I'm taking him in to his regular vet at 9:20 this morning and I'm going to ask for all the blood work and another fPLI test and I want a T-4 too. And maybe a chest x-ray to see if Blackie is retaining fluids. I gave only 50 ml last night and he didn't eat that well, but he gained more than 2 oz in the last 24 hours. I know that's not a lot, but considering that he isn't eating well and that he is peeing a lot, I thought he would lose weight. He also just doesn't seem to be feeling well. I did cut back on his pred this morning, giving him 1.25mg instead of 2.5.

I also made an appt with his hold vet at 3:30 today. If I get what I need this morning, I'll cancel that one. If not, I'll take him in for a cysto & c&s.

Ele & Blackie, We will be thinking positively for your vet visit(s) today. I hope that the mystery of the weight gain can be figured out and that it can easily be dealt with. I know how this must be weighing on your mind, Ele, and wish I could help in some way. You are such a great mamabean and Blackie knows it! Many prayers and healing vines are on their way to you today.

Just got back from my reg vet. I had dropped off urine earlier just in case and he said it showed zero bacteria. He checked Blackie over and said his heart and lungs were fine and everything else looked good. He said bloodwork would be a waste of time because he's been on pred. He also said the fPLI would always be high, so there was no point in checking that again. I didn't argue, but I'm keeping the afternoon appt with the old vet. I'm off to tbp. I'll check back later.

yikes. have you counted his respiration rate, Ele? how long as he been on pred?

He also said the fPLI would always be high, so there was no point in checking that again.

huh? always be high? i don't understand. was this the vet who wouldn't order an fPLI for the longest time? (my memory's fuzzier than ever).

it seems you wasted your time at that vet and i'm glad you are going to the other one this afternoon...i'm with WCF about this vet not wanting to do the fPLI to begin with...i remember that....

where do these vets go to school i wonder???

please get everything checked out as Stacey had mentioned to you over in the other forum....you gotta go with your gut feeling and you are the one dealing with Blackie on a day to day basis...so hopefully the other vet will have better input and will get to the bottom of what's going on with Blackie....

I think that vet was a waste of time too. My dog has been fighting a UTI since May of last year. The free catch showed no bacteria. January they did a draw from her bladder and it "cultured" ecoli. Blood work when a cat "ain't doing right" is never a waste of time.

I did count Blackie's breaths last night when he was sleeping really hard and it was 28 per minute. His breathing does seem fine, but his weight gain is unexplainable. The other thing he has been doing is sitting upright and staring into space for an hour or more. Then he passes out and sleeps really hard for a couple of hours. He just does not look like my old Blackie.

I have my doubts about my old vet too, but I'm hoping he will listen to me. They can do a c&s there, though I think they have to send it out too. This vet I'll see this afternoon is the vet that would not prescribe Lantus. But I took Blackie to them in December when he stopped eating and they were very helpful then. At least they are a larger clinic and I think they have greater experience in other things.

please make sure you get the ultrasound done....and xrays if you can as well.....when a kitty is not himself you know there is more to it...go with your gut and stick to your guns with the vet....you NEED answers....

My heart is breaking. The vet found something on his exam that felt like a mass/lump in his abdomen. He did a full body x-ray and found an enlarged liver and fluid on Blackie's lungs and heart. He said it is most likely cancer. He sent all of the bloodwork to CSU and we should have results within 3 days. He is going to call Dr. Tweed (sp?) at CSU and see if he is available. If Blackie's bloodwork comes back ok, meaning that he isn't crashing, etc, he is suggesting we take Blackie to Fort Collins and have Dr. Tweed do a biopsy of the liver. But he also said that depending on the type of cancer, Dr. Tweed could only give Blackie another 4-5 good months. He told us to keep doing what we are doing, fluids 50ml bid, pred 1.25mg bid, all his other meds. He said that if we make any major change it could make Blackie decompensate. I didn't even talk to him about the cost of taking Blackie to CSU.

So I am going to make Blackie as comfortable as possible, which I was doing anyway, and wait for the b/w results. He also did a cysto and is sending it out for c&s, but he thinks its unlikely that Blackie has a UTI.

Please send your healing prayers for Blackie. He is the sweetest cat I've ever known and I will be lost without him.

Blackie has CRF which is why you are giving fluids right? I think you should post on the CRF group - if there is fluid on the heart and lungs. It is a balancing act.

If Blackie's appetite hasn't been 100% the liver could be fatty liver. This as you know is reversible with food. You should look into a liver supplement like denamarin.

Are you keeping him on Prednisone or are you getting advice to taper this back?

Depending on procedures (if you do a biopsy), you may want to consider placing an etube if you think it would help. Its very easy to place an etube and would ensure Blackie's gets supplemental feedings when he isn't hungry.

I just read your post in the CRF group....hopefully you will get good input regarding the fluids. I'm so sorry of the news. Will keep you in my prayers. Keep giving the Denamarin. Your vet is right...keep doing everything as is...

Ele, my heart hurts for you. I know you're scared right now. I can only send hugs and prayers for strength for you and healing vines for Blackie.
 
I am really worried about the fluids - did the CRF group tell you to keep them up that high especially with the pred? My dog has heart disease and they won't put her on pred because we need the fluids to leave her body. We have to make sure her lungs stay fluid free. A biopsy would tell you if its FHL for the liver. ALT and ALP were very high with Maverick. Being on the assisted feeding board for years, some cats do get FHL even when they are eating. Its weight loss not complete anorexia that starts this. And with the fluids you don't know if Blackie has lost weight. There are some very knowlegeable people on the CRF and pacreatits boards. They will give you advice as if it was their own cats. It may not be cancer. Sending more hugs.
 
Oh Ele, I don't know what to say. I know how much you are hurting now. I just hope that when the test results come in the situation might not seem as dire as it does now. Sending you and Blackie lots and lots of positive thoughts and prayers for healing.

Ele I am so sorry... I too don't know what to say - I know how much this is hurting right now. I hope that when the results comeback that it won't be a dismal as it is now. Mannie and I send as many healing vines and positive thoughts as we can find. You are in our prayers.

(((Ele))) my heart is breaking for you right now with this news even though it is not confirmed. I just know you love your Blackie like no other and that he is your little soulmate. I know you will do what is absolutely the best for him...you always do. Please know we are sending tons of healing vines and prayers. I agree with Karrie that there are alot of knowledgeable people in the online groups and I hope someone can offer some advice.

Oh my goodness, such difficult news....I hate the see this happening to anyone. I'm hoping for more encouraging news for your beautiful Blackie when you go to CSU in Fort Collins to see Dr. Tweed.
