So last night, after a promising 100 PMPS, Chispa slid down into the 50s and stayed there. She meowed for more food from +2 until +4; I fed her every half hour and she ate all of it. She stopped meowing and curled up in her cozy carrier to sleep after the +4 test, having eaten all but a few bites of her +4 HC snack. I coaxed her out for another test at +5 and got four errors in a row before giving up and going to bed, leaving her with a fresh MC meal in her dish and her regular LC meal in the automatic feeder for +8. Maybe in retrospect the MC meal at +5 should have been HC, but she is so good at letting me know when her BG is dropping (meows insistently) that I didn't think it was necessary, since she had stopped meowing and went to bed without touching the +5 meal. She had eaten less than half of the +5 and +8 meals by this morning.

When I saw 266 on the meter, I assumed it was another bad strip. I retested the other ear and got 285. After that I got the other meter out of the closet, opened a fresh can of strips ... and got 267.

This is unheard of.

What is going on?? And what should I do about it???

Any chance she ate even a little of the 12% of +5 later in the cycle? Like in the 2 hour window before the shot?
Hmmm ... yes, it's possible. Definitely did not eat within 1 hour of the shot, but possibly within the 2 hour window. I'm surprised, though -- she doesn't seem to get much of a bump from food (even the two HC feedings last night barely made a dent) ...

ETA: She didn't poop yesterday -- I know some cats go higher when they don't -- but I haven't noticed that with her, at least up to now.

Could be a combination of a bounce from last night's 50s which has been aggravated by reduced duration from eating carbs late in the cycle.

We'll go with that. And see what happens in this cycle.
Still, this is so unlike her.
One thing I noticed was that her ears seemed very warm this morning. Is that a sign of anything?

Is her nose cool and moist? Is she showing any signs of being unwell?

Thanks for the link! I think she's ok -- her nose is cool and moist, and even her ears are on the cool side now. She's not eating much this morning and that is unusual for her, but she did eat a LOT overnight. Her BG has come down by almost half as of +2.5, which is great (I think?), unless she's working on another dive and bounce cycle ...

Ok, now she has dropped by almost another 100 points in the last 90 minutes, ending up at a (very nice? but scary??) 59 at +4. I fed her a meal of LC at +2.5 (Steak Frites, since it seems like she has burned out on chicken) and she ate the whole thing; from then until +4 she sat underneath the table and let out a single, soft meow now and then -- not the insistent I'm starving and my BG is dropping and I need FOOOOOOOOOD, but her usual, non-urgent little "Hey don't forget about me" squeak. And now she's at 59???

Yes, I know -- other cats do this every day, all day -- and yes, I've been lucky that Miss Chispa typically sticks to a narrower range of ups and downs. Maybe it's the dental, but we're on day 10 now. Shouldn't she be getting back to normal, not throwing more curveballs than ever before?

Today I would try to get another test past +4. She has some serious downward momentum going! That plus it being day 10 post dental, I wouldn't assume she's done dropping.

When you see high preshots like your AMPS this morning, following a big drop, it can be a sign of lack of duration the previous cycle. In other words, she ate some higher carbs later and cut off the insulin action. It's either that and/or a whopping bounce break.

@Wendy&Neko Thanks for explaining that. Luckily the two HC snacks seem to have kicked in, and she's a little higher now (63) at +5.25.
So given that +3 is her usual nadir (but not absolutely always), is it ok to drop down to MC now?

And we're back on the rollercoater! @Wendy&Neko @Bandit's Mom , what should I do to prevent her from diving again? MC meals now, +1, and +2? Or LC now and MC at +1 and +2?

ETA: Actually... she probably ate the last of her LC within 2 hours of PMPS. It's been a day of deadlines and distractions, so admittedly I've been less "on it" than I should be. :(

Wow, Chispa, the lower numbers are exciting, though for sure not conducive to sleep! When Biggie’s bg would drop and not respond well to HC, I would feed every half hour once I could tell the drop was commencing. Sometimes I would try giving LC every half hour, depending on how low he was going.

Exciting is right, or maybe the word is "interesting," as in the (supposedly) Chinese curse, "may you live in interesting times." She is a high maintenance girl these days!:woot:
