2/12 Max amps 226

We are going to see how today plays out then possibly try a small increase tonight or tomorrow. Today I have to be somewhere else so we will see. @Wendy&Neko thanks for answering my questions. Max’s reduction point was 70, but I changed it back to 50 when he didn’t hold reductions well and the SRT activity seemed to be slowing down for him. I am interested in learning how to use the R and would only use it in high numbers when he tended to be going up with those high bounces. I think it would be helpful. I would appreciate any help on getting started with that. What to get, dosing, etc. I am very careful with Max as you know, I test him often. I know the power of R and would be very careful and ask for help in learning how to use it. That would be great. I didn’t think he needed a reduction but it has me baffled on why most cats on Lev have nice flat cycles and Max just can’t seem to do that. That’s the only reason I had that thought. Thanks again.

What time is your PS time? You are on EST, correct? I am trying to figure out which members experienced with R can help you. We typically have that person on for your PS, to guide on shooting and testing for the first 4 hours. I am on PST, and out of town for a couple days starting tomorrow. So it can't be me, or the experiment can be delayed. We usually start with R at PS time. Looking at Max's spreadsheet, you'd only do it when he's starting a bounce to try to lower the bounce height a bit. He's getting over his bounces too fast (a good thing) for anyone else.

For anyone lurking, the use of R is particular to Max and Lori. Lori has a medical background and Max has a secondary condition called acromegaly, so special circumstances and suggestions to them are specific to them.

I've seen other cats bouncy on Lev, Max just doesn't seem to be getting as good duration as all do. I also found Neko was a lot bouncier unless she was at a dose where nadirs were consistently in the 70's. Above that, bounce city. She came by her nickname "Rainbow Queen" quite honestly. Not sure why you gave Max a skinny dose today, he looks like he could use that increase.

Thanks Wendy. I gave Max a skinny dose this morning because I saw that it looked like he was bounce clearing and sometimes that is when he takes a nose dive. I had to be gone for a while this morning and wouldn’t be around to monitor and feed so to satisfy my own anxiety that’s what I did. I’m helicopter mom and just can’t help it . His PS is at 5:30 am EST. I’d really love for it to be you to help me learn but I’m sure with you being on the west coast that’s next to impossible at that time in the morning. I’m not in a hurry but I do want to learn how to use R for decreasing the height of the bounces, as you said. I can assure you that I won’t do anything if I am unsure about it. That is from years and years of having to be responsible for other people’s wellbeing, so that’s just me. Whatever you recommend or whoever you recommend to help me, I will go along with the plan. I really appreciate yours and anyone else’s time in helping me learn. I’d need to know what kind of R to get, etc. since I’m not familiar with it in feline diabetes. Whatever you can offer, thanks so much. If you’d rather I delay until you’re back, I can.

Due to the nature of the depot, and the size of Max's dose, the depot and dose shot the night before will be the largest factor in how the first half of Max's cycle would go this morning. If you really want to impact how the cycle goes, a half dose would be better.

I know you have the nursing background, so are more than able to handle R, plus you monitor a lot. It could be possible to try a couple R try runs in the PM cycle, cause I assure you I am not awake at 5:30 EST! As it turns out, Max's active cycles later are the AM, so you wouldn't want to shoot it at AMPS anyway right now. For cats, we use Humulin (or Novolin) R. I seem to remember in the US that Walmart has the cheapest prices. If you want to get ready for a trial, try practising some 0.1 unit doses with your regular insulin syringes, maybe try first with a coloured liquid.

Okay that’s what I was thinking too, that as long as he is bouncing at night, we could just try it out in the pm cycles. I will go to Walmart tomorrow. I do have a nursing background and I know R works quicker with a shorter duration. I have not given it though since I worked in the medical unit over 20 years ago. Before I retired, I was a prenatal provider and we referred insulin dependent prenatal patients out because they were considered high risk in our clinic. That is a very small dose so I’m going to have to study and practice with that. With my usual insulin syringes that I use for Lev, correct? Not to be asking a dumb question but I want to make sure I do everything right and not assume anything. I will get some of the Novolin tomorrow at Walmart and just wait until you are back before I start to give any. Does that sound okay with you? Are there any stickies on R or anything else I should review or know? I got some calipers anyway yesterday so I’m going to start practicing with them too.

Do check around pricing. I seem to recall someone said the Walmart one was about $25 is dollars a vial, but elsewhere quite a bit more. Maybe Humulin R cheaper? It's not a rush to buy if me helping, cause I won't be available at your PMPS until Friday.

And yes, same syringes you use for Lev.

Also, no stickies on R. We don't want people people to try this on their own just by reading something. Knowing when NOT to give R is the most important lesson of all.

Okay I understand and I will check the prices. My sister is a home health nurse so she may know. Another dumb question but I don’t recall ever drawing up that small of an amount in a syringe. If it’s 0.1 unit, it’s not marked on the syringe so how do I measure that? I see the smallest amount on the syringe is the 0.5 unit line. I’m used to these large doses on Max. I will just wait to start when you get back on Friday PMPS.

That is excellent. Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you. Hope you have a nice time away. I will check with you when you get back. I went ahead and increased to 5.25 units tonight.
