It may seem the wrong place to post this, but when you read on,
I believe you will agree that this is EXACTLY where this story belongs.

This morning, my sister Tamara's Bernese Mountain Dog- Nigel "Nip" Simmons- crossed The Bridge.
His history is somewhat the same as my Adoptocats- when my sis went to the nursing home,
he and the 2 kitties were left here unsupervised at her house.
But two years into their isolation, Nip became a "public nuisance"-
barking incessantly, disturbing the neighbors (as would any lonely, ignored dog).
So to avoid citations, fines, etc.- he moved down the street to live with my mother.

As many of you know, I come from a ranch family that firmly believes animals are food, tools, or pests-
and pets are a ridiculous luxury. My mother subscribed to this belief- and hated having to care for Tam's 'cast-offs'.
(Her reaction to my treating Binks was the same as many of you have experienced- absolute disbelief, disparagement, and ridicule.)

But Nip's good manners and gentle nature began to grow on her- and three years ago when she fell seriously ill and
took to her bed (refusing to call anyone for help) this remarkable dog stayed by her side for three days-
and finally broke through a screened window and went to the neighbor's house, barked until they came outside,
then led them back to Mom, who was taken to the hospital.

Nip was an old fellow, and last week he went into renal failure.
As we were deciding on the best way to proceed, my mother finally broke down and turned to me in tears-
and said "NOW I understand...you did what you did for Binks because of their love and devotion"
(BTW- this is the third time in my life I have ever seen my mom cry,
and the first time she has spoken Binks' name- heretofore she referred to him as "That Cat")

Nip passed this morning with his head cradled in my mother's lap.

So I raise a glass to you, Nigel "Nip" Simmons- for your kindness, your gentle caring way...
and most of all- for opening a needful heart to the beauty and wonder of unconditional love.

Land softly, Big Fella...you will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed.

Celi

rb_icon Oh Celi, what a beautiful story, a great tribute to a grand soul. May the love he brought to your mom's heart live forever and bloom in ways as yet unknown.

Fly free Nip. Thank you for blessing our lives.

Fly free sweet Nigel! You were loved, and you will be missed. wings_cat

Celi, thanks for sharing this story. Yes, everyone here understands - and has dealt with someone who just doesn't. I am glad Nigel was able to 'convert' your mom. cat_pet_icon (lol we don't have any dog smilies so this one will have to do!)

Lovely words, Celi. I'm so sorry that Nip passed. It sounds like he was a blessing to your mom, both as a companion and as a guide to opening her heart. Safe travels, sweet Nip.

Celi, that is so beautiful and definitely belongs here. My condolences to your Mom and you on the loss of Nip. What a blessing and miracle how Nip opened your Mom's heart. We will light a candle for Nip. Hugs and love.

What a remarkable dog. He deserves a wonderful tribute to a life well lived.

Please share this fable with your mom. I suspect she will now understand.

Fly free, Nip and land softly. There are who we dearly love who will be waiting for you at the Bridge.

Celi, that was a beautiful tribute to Nip. Thank you for sharing a different side of your mom with us.
I hope Nip's devotion will change her attitude about Binks too. Wouldn't it be nice, if they became friends?

Land softly at the Bridge, dear Nip, and run and play with our babies, that are there waiting for us.

What a beautiful and amazing dog Nip was to get through to you mother like that. This is a really special story Celi, thank you for sharing - even if I am crying my eyes out now.

What a special soul, the definition of unconditional love. Our animal friends are so persistent in giving their love. Safe travels over the bridge Nip, and you will be greeted by many of our loving friends who will return the love you have shared in abundance. rb_icon

Cheers to Nip! You are the wonder dog.

Celi, that is the most beautiful tribute! Brought tears to my eyes when you said it was only the 3rd time you have seen your mom cry. Nip must have really made an impact on her life. And amazing story of how he saved your mom when she became ill.

Fly free, big boy!

An amazing story and an amazing tribute to an amazing soul. We are sorry for your pain and sorrow and that of your mother's and Tam's.

Gentle Journey, Nip. Lighting a candle for you to guide you on your way home.

What a beautiful story Celi. Thank you so much for sharing it. My deepest sympathies to you, Tam, and your mom (I can't call her momster right now  ) on your loss of such a wonderful friend.

Fly free sweet Nip.

oh waaahhhhhh that made me all teary! what a wonderful story about the love of a dog. yes, we all "get it." they aren't "just" pets - they are so much more and they deserve everything we give them.

thanks so much for sharing Nip's story, celi. it must've been very powerful for you to be with your mom this morning. :YMHUG:

Celi! The Bridge received 2 loving wonderful dogs yesterday who touched the hearts of my DB & SIL, like no other animal had ever.they also had many animals, but this was the special one...Their 80 lb 14 yr old black lab BO, passed yesterday morning, after surviving a bloat surgery for a week--This beautiful creature was partially blind & deaf, but when you came near, he smelled you & licked your hand & hugged your heart!
They also finally realized what I have been saying & doing for my whole life with my animals..Unconditional love--
They who I always thought, just had animals for the kids, or brought in strays just because my SIL couldnt see them outside, never really formed a relationship like we have with ours..like Moonie or Binks...
This dog finally got them, they fell in love with him & had him for 14 great years..
I loved BO very much he was very special..
So Celi, I say a prayer for Nip and BO who I hope have met at the Bridge & became fast friends..
These are the gifts we receive, and they give so much more...
My heart hurts for you & your Mom,,I didnt even out this in my condo, as I didnt feel it belonged--Thanks for this post!--Love you!

What a beautiful story .. I'm sorry for your mom's loss this week .. many of us here have lost more then one furbaby, and while it is never easy to let any of them go, somehow that first one that stole your heart is the hardest one to heal from .. Fly free Nip ..

Celi, thanks for sharing that wonderful story. The love for an animal is something that is hard to explain, and most of the time, it can only be felt. So glad your mother was able to feel that love. And Roni I'm sorry for your loss also, of your dog Bo. It's a little easier to take when you know they probably have met up already and are together now playing and running… It was a wonderful tribute. Celi,I'm so glad your mother had that opportunity to feel the love of an animal, there is nothing like it.

oh Celi,
This is the right place to post ....we ARE FAMILY here...we understand it all too well....

may you and your mom find comfort in the memories of dear Nip...he was a brave smart dog and I'm glad your mom realized he was a gift to her....

Fly Free Nip wings_cat you will be missed.....but i know you will make lots of friends at the bridge.....
