So this morning, Sabian drew a 263 AMPS. I'm not sure what to give now. This is the lowest AM test she's had, and with the hypo yesterday, I'm just not certain.

Advice?

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263

This is where those U100s help. You can eyeball on the U40s but it is hard to really get the same dose each time. I would think .5 would be a safe dose. You could do a drop more if you are going to be around at that +3 to +6 mark.

Your gut has been doing a pretty good job. What are you thinking?

Two heads up. If you get the U100 needles, remember you have to use the conversion chart. If she goes down into the 50-60 range, try low carb first to see if it brings her up.

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 -- Advice?

I'm with Sue on the .5.....almost starting over but hopefully a safe dose and another lesson to see what .5 does. Again, she may need more than .5 but less than 1 unit, today will show us but better we learn she needs a little more than to learn that even 1 unit is way too much. Time to get some U100 syringes ;-)

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 -- Advice?

Thank you both. I'm shooting .5u as close as I can on the U40 syringes. Yes, I'm making the trek back to Walmart for U100 syringes and strips today.

Anyone have that conversion chart url handy?

Hi,
can someone catch me up? which insulin is being used? and am i right that sabian had a hypo yesterday? just looked at the chart.

Good morning.

Sabian is less than enthused about today, and Isabelle just wants some attention.

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 -- Advice?

All of Walmart's ReliOn U-100 3/10 cc insulin syringes are now marked with 1/2 unit markings. Used to be you'd have to ask for them but not anymore.

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 -- Advice?

wow, i would have a super hard time trying to figue .5 pzi in a u100 syringe...bravo to you!

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 +2-225

+2 is 225. From the looks of the chart, she's on the same track as the 8th where she was given 1u.

So ,diet change may or may not be relevant. Wouldn't it be easy if they would just follow the "rules"?

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 +2-225

+3 is 205. Still right on track with the 8th.

Yes, it would. I just hope we can get it regulated without the deep dives...

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 +2-225

The drops are a bit disconcerting, although it is hard to know whether they bother us more thanthey bother Sabian.

I think you have an option to play around with dose and food a bit, to see whether snacks help smooth out that curve. If they don't, and if after a week or two you are still unhappy with the shape of that curve, you could always consider a different insulin like lantus or levemir.

Re: 2/11 Sabian (PZI) AMPS-263 +2-225 +3-205 +5-207

+7 is 269. Looks to have followed the curve of the 8th, but flatter on the backend. We'll see what the PMPS looks like.

She has an interesting pattern, Patrick with her early drop and then long surf. As long as you know that is how she reacts (for now  ) I don't see anything bad about this pattern. It's that "Every cat is different" thing.

One idea could be that it is the food that causes the drop. We have a couple kitties here that drop after eating. Usually a diabetic cat has a higher blood glucose level after food. ( One of the tests for pancreatic action is to feed and then test in 20 - 30 minutes to see if the levels go up or down. If they go down, it generally means the pancreas has started to work again.) I don't think anyone has decided why some cats go down after eating while they still need insulin. Lori's Tom is one that does this consistently. Maybe she will jump in here also.

You might try the food experiment (test, feed and test again sometime other than that first 2 hours after the shot)

Her long surf is different for PZI. "Usually" we see a more U shaped curve. Lantus kitties tend to surf for a longer time than PZI kitties. (Again, ECID. And it is only important in that you are aware that is how she is reacting.

It doesn't matter. It is that knowledge is power thing. The more you know about your individual cat and how she works, the better you will be able to help her.

I would like you to post some late afternoon over in PZI. We have several experienced people who come on in the evening who don't post regularly over on Health. They would know more than I do about the different ways cats have reacted to PZI.

I went to Walmart today (UUGH) to pick up more test strips and completely forgot the U100s. I'm going to have to go to the grocery store in the morning anyway, so I'll stop by their pharmacy and get some.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm looking for 5/16cc U100 30 or 31 gauge insulin syringes with half-unit marks?

No, you are looking for 3/10 cc U-100 syringes.....Relion all come marked in1/2 units in the 3/10 cc syringe. Now, I use the 1/2" needle and with you saying 5/16 you may mean the needle size and that is the short needle.

What size needle are you using with the U 40 syringe? I've never used those syringes.....have always used the conversion chart and a U100 syringe.

3/10 cc ..29guage...12.7mm(1/2" needle) ReliOn brand at Walmart.

You will have to check and see if the 3/10 comes in the short needle, 5/16", and what the gauge is.

I do know all 3/10 cc syringes come with the 1/2 unit markings on them now.

Patrick, I'm running out the door but just read this thread and want to let you know I too have a cat who does the food drop!
We are more leveled out now but there was a time not too long ago when Tom would drop 2-300 points on food alone. Yep.
amps 600+ feed...45 minutes later like 340!
BEFORE the shot.
So even tho' I'm leaving the house now I'd like you to know that.
These days Tom might only drop 20-60 points after eatting...I believe it's important info to share and know about your kittie's data.
Good Luck
I'll check on you when I get home about 9:30 pacific.
Lori

At 20:30, I shot .5u eyeballed on the U40 syringe like this morning. Her PMPS was 297, so I'm content with just shooting that amount. She ate pretty well too, so we'll see how it works out when the +2 and +3 comes around.

I'm not going to open a new thread for Sabian's PMPS tonight. She was 297 preshot, and +2 is 262.

Apparently she got into some kibble again today too. Science Diet "Active Senior" dry. I really have to start trying to ween Nyssa off the dry food, but she's VERY stubborn and finicky.
