Hi all,

We just finished up with the home vet. It went well and they were so friendly! He was definitely nervous to have new people handling him, but for us I think it was better than traveling to the vet…

The biggest thing is they think he has some arthritis. They want us to start Cosequin and then potentially Solensia.

For the food allergy situation, they’re recommending some prescription wet foods (I’m skeptical… but will research). They gave us a target weight of 15 lbs and 250 calories a day, so that’s good to know. They weren’t really concerned about the phosphorus levels in FF.

Teeth look good, but he does have cataracts developing.

They kept complimenting me and were so impressed by the level of care with the diabetes, so for that I can’t thank you all enough.

Thank you for reading and keeping up with us. - Tim

So glad the vet visit. I would love to have a home that appointment for Ivy. I think she would do so much better. Probably most cats would. It’s so stressful to take them to an office:(
I hope you can get Pookey some relief from the arthritis. Hopefully the consequence will be a good place to start and see how that goes.
He’s doing so beautifully, you should be very proud of yourselves :bighug::cat::bighug:

Very interesting update, Tim. I'm glad things went well with the home vet. I really like hearing that they aren't concerned about the phosphorus in FF. Did they say anything further about that? I'm so sorry about Pookey's arthritis and the cataracts. Did you have a clue about the arthritis? Does he have symptoms?

Hi Tim. I am glad to hear that the vet home visit went well. Sorry, about Pookey cataracts and arthritis. Butch has cataracts and arthritis too. He gets the Solencia injection monthly. It works well for him. Does Pookey show any signs of his arthritis? You are doing a great job caring for Pookey! :bighug::cat::bighug:

She seemed be in the camp of if the kidney values aren’t elevated it’s not a problem to have the phosphorus. Or she really wants to push the prescription food… she said she doesn’t get a kick back on it, but she could have been lying I guess. I need to get clarification on what she meant by that - she kept referencing diabetic specific Hills or Purina wet.

On the arthritis, she felt a little stiffness in his one front leg, and I have noticed he has been taking the stairs a little slower.

Thanks Madeline. I wasn’t sure about the signs. He takes the stairs slow but I thought maybe just getting older and he is heavy.

That’s great the injections works for Butch, does it clear it up pretty good? Do you do anything for the cataracts? How has the progression of that been?

I know you've likely heard this before, but what I've been told is that the vet schools are heavily funded by Hills and Purina, etc. So, while I guess a kick back is possible, what is more likely is that the only training they've received regarding FD, CKD, etc., has involved the importance of pushing the prescription foods of those companies. I see so many vets committed to those prescription foods, and so many not committed to healthier options. And they can be almost evangelistic with their zeal. My own vet has told me that there is very little training regarding FD and other major feline illnesses. He was fortunate enough to have a FD specialist teach the couple of weeks of training they had on FD (at Auburn Univ.). Thankfully (for us, anyway), he has continued to keep abreast of the most recent research in FD. I'd like to ask a few other specialists about the phosphorous issue--I'm sure advice/opinions will vary.

I'd like to know about the progression of the cataracts too, as Jude was just diagnosed as well. My doctor doesn't recommend the cataract surgery.

Yea, good reminder. It can’t hurt to continue to look for a better option than FF. I guess if her prescription stuff actually has good percentages I could be interested, but I definitely won’t be blindly switching to that!

I'm so glad to hear that the home vet visit went so well! I can relate to having to do some things a little differently/weirdly for a sensitive kitty. It seems like the stress of the whole process will be over more quickly for everyone involved this way which is amazing.

I've been wondering if Xander has cataracts too, but the vet hasn't mentioned anything about it.

Yep - sensitive boys for sure. I’m not sure there’s a lot they can do for cataracts anyways. But I think the cats can adapt to it pretty well. It is sad though, they’re not getting younger.

That's so good that the vet visit went well. For Bella, it made such a huge difference, to have a vet come to our house instead of goiung to the office. And for me too :) If you like them, even better!
I think cataract must be frequent in older cats, and dogs too. I am not sure if they do surgery like on humans? Bella had some, not much but you could see it.
have a good day, Tim! Good snow coming? :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Aww that’s good the cataracts didn’t really affect her. 8-10 inches this weekend

Hi Tim. Sorry, for the late response.
Butch was walking with a limp and his jumps weren't steady. After receiving the Solencia he no longer limps, he is running and jumping like he's a kitten.
Butch developed cataracts at a young age. We aren't sure if maybe he was born with it, but it took several years to progress. Today he no longer has the sight in that eye, but you would never know. :bighug:

Aw that’s great! I’m going to try this joint supplement but if no improvement will push for the Solensia. Thank you!
