Hi Folks:

Scooter had a weepy eye with crud in it when I woke up. He slept with me all night and snored a little. I gave him his clindrops and he already seems better. His eating is good but he really has had enough FF for a while I think.

He is negative for ketones. :-D I kept him on 4.5U.

Do I need to change anything after his dental on Monday? Will he still get the same amount of insulin?

I am hoping for another blue today!

Re: 2/1 Scooter AMPS 302,

With some luck, the dental may result in reducing his glucose levels. Your home testing will show you when you need to reduce by heading to or going below 50 mg/dL.

Re: 2/1 Scooter AMPS 302,

Happy Caturday Linda and Scooter!

Most vets tell us to take up food/water at least 8 hours prior to dentals due to the possibility of kitties getting sick from the anesthesia, so we usually give the normal dose the night before, and either no dose the morning of (since no food) or only a little dose along with a tiny bit of food.

You should call your vet and ask what they think too, but we had China's dental not long ago and went with the normal dose the night before, and none the morning of. Scooter should be on an IV during the dental and they should be watching his BG numbers too so if he goes high they can bring him down and if he goes low they can give him some extra glucose...then when you get him home, you just have to see how he's doing and go from there.

If you're out today, might also want to pick up some baby food...Beechnut has some meats that don't contain anything but meat and meat juice...some others contain other stuff you don't want, so just make sure to read the labels. The texture makes it easy for them to lap up if their mouths are sore.

We're always so nervous when our kitties go under anesthesia, so we'll be virtually holding your hand the whole time!

Hope you have a good weekend, and good luck with the dental on Monday!

What did your vet suggest for food and shot dose before the dental? I've seen quite a variation in what they request. When you get Scooter home after the dental, test him then and before PS and post for advice. Anesthesia can lower BG's. If Scooter isn't eating much it may change what you give that night. For Neko's first dental, the vet suggested 1/2 dose in the PM. For her second dental (dental specialist), the different vet suggested full dose.

The Beechnut stage 1 chicken and broth or turkey and broth are good baby food options.

FWIW we did a dental last year. We picked up his food at 10pm and didn't feed or give insulin in the morning. I was worried his numbers would shoot up during the day, but his levels stayed pretty flat. We didn't have any extractions so he was back on track for dinner. I hope the procedure goes smoothly for Scooter.

Thanks everyone for your input. I just found a store on the way to the vet that sells the beechnut food so I will get some on my way back from dropping him off. We live in the country so everything is 40 miles or more away.

Scooter threw up his whole dinner tonight which is abnormal and in fact has never happened. I fed him just now a small amount and he has held it down so I will give him some later before bed again.

It is so nice to hear your experiences because they are full of information. Dr. P said to give him his normal insulin before surgery and feed him a light breakfast only.

I hope Scooter kept the rest of his meals down tonight.

You might want to think about the amount of insulin you give Monday morning, based on Scooter's numbers. I gave Neko 1/4 of her usual dose and a 1/3 breakfast when she had her dental in December, and she was below deduction numbers when they tested her just before her surgery. I think the majority of people here give either no insulin or 1/2 dose, based on AMPS.

The vomiting could be due to the Clinidrops if oral.

I wouldn't give him a full dose of insulin in the morning.
My vet had me do a half dose if at normal pre-shot level.
I would test to see where he was and decide based on that and on if the vet was going to monitor glucose during the procedure (ask!) The last thing you need is a hypo during a dental.
