..Trying to implement all of the things.. I dont know if the Zenequin is even doing anything. He cant potty now great. He has a hard time moving. I’m trying to maneuver in the phosphorus w all the other darn stuff because it can react w certain things.. We needed to address this earlier!!! No one caught it or cared. Animal medicine is pathetic at times…. This is just really hard. :(

It just.. feels late. Idk. Its so hard seeing him not feel good.

he's not doing good today physically.. he's having a terrible time walking and got to the box and missed it twice already by hanging out of the box too much.. have some underpads on the floor. catching things.. but this is hard. :( he managed to go farther in to do a stool.. im at a loss.

I don't know how to help him aside from keeping doing what we are.. idk if his legs also hurt. :(

When did he last have fluids? Is he having an echocardiogram?
he was due at 12:30 for some.. but im seeing where his numbers go today (?) cuz Wendy (and im also reading about it..) mentioned that fluids can lower BG levels.. 😬 im pushing it to when up/or around 3 pm?.. i guess. idk. 😞💖

well his primary has an outside service do them and so i made an appt w him as next best thing (?) cuz everyone else (cardiology) is booked out far.. ☹️🫶🏼 we’re scheduled to go this Wednesday.. we’ll also do a blood panel.. see where we are now. i dont expect much.. but hearing things frm you and everything.. idk. could be ok. but hes showing a lot of symptoms.. this infection has done it. idk. shrug. 💔

He doesn’t have any fluid left on him does he — like pooled anywhere on his body?

It’s so hard watching them struggling, isn’t it. It’s heartbreaking. When Darcy had really high phosphorus he had difficulty with his back legs, but when we got the phosphorus number down he was able to get around just fine.

oof idk!! I don't think so.. :/ because he's lost a bit of weight and an older baby he got some skin a little loose.. now that I can tell?? I really dk.. I been doing it for a few days and he seems ok?.. 🥲 I was going to give him some.. maybes'll extend it to later today.. 5,5:30?.. later in the cycle? he's also napping.. I could try checking.. but the amount is also low at 50 mL so I find it hard to see after the first hour or two after.. ???

its terrible!!!!! its so bad.. I been upset alll day. but that's encouraging.. im sure the higher sugar numbers for us haven't helped things either w having to potty, etc...... :/ Suzanne his little legs.. they're wobbly and he's a bit off balance.. not all the time thankfully. and he tries tho..... 🥲

how long did it take for you to see some results w that?.. I'm doing 1/4 tsp today (trying) cuz I need to call the company and make them do the legwork with all the medicines/treatments and find out exactly how to go about this.. (in their opinion..) cuz the binder can react w many medicines... ugh. ❤️‍🩹 how do you space things out? @tiffmaxee suggested she heard or know its like 1 hr prior to a medicine it can be used, then 3 hrs after a medicine... and then this hydrating thing.. they say 15 min... do you just mix it in, hydrate it, and serve it?... OOH! I would like to know if it could be microwaved.. cuz who wants cold snack/food in this cool weather? (I warm all things anyway for him cuz its been in the fridge..)

Yes. 50 mL is low so you are being very careful.

When to Mix Binders with Food

Phosphorus binders (apart from niacinamide) must be given with food so they can bind with the phosphorus in it. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs and cats – staging and management strategies (2015) Chew D A Presentation to the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association 2015 Virginia Veterinary Conference says “Intestinal phosphate binders work best when given with meals or within 2 hours of feeding to maximize their binding of dietary phosphorus.”

Personally, I think within two hours of feeding is pushing it. One human study, Effectiveness of aluminum hydroxide timing administration in relation to meals in controlling hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients (2005) Katopodis KP, Andrikos E, Pappas M & Siamopoulos KC The International Journal of Artificial Organs 28(8) pp803-7, found that giving aluminium hydroxide binders 30 minutes before eating only reduced phosphorus levels by 7%, whereas administering them mixed with food or up to 30 minutes after the meal reduced phosphorus levels by 28.5%.

I would aim to give the binders as close to feeding times as possible and check your cat’s blood phosphorus levels after about two weeks, when with luck they will be falling nicely.

Aluminium hydroxide and many other binders are usually odourless and tasteless if you choose carefully, though they can sometimes add a bit of a gritty texture to food or make it taste a little drier.

Most people find it easiest to add the binders to the cat’s food, though if the manufacturer of your binder makes a different recommendation, be guided by that.

Giving Binders with Canned Food

  • tablets can simply be crushed and added to the food.
  • capsules can be opened and the contents mixed with the food (after measuring as necessary).
  • liquid binders can either be mixed in the food or syringed into your cat’s mouth just before eating.
  • one retailer recommends adding a teaspoon of water to the tinned food and binder and letting it stand for ten minutes before serving in order to let the binder mix thoroughly. This may help remove any grittiness.

How Long For Binders to Work

You should see an improvement in your cat’s blood phosphorus levels after 7-10 days. You may see a difference in your cat’s demeanour sooner than this. Check your cat’s phosphorus level every two weeks until the level is acceptable, then check it every 2-3 months to see if any adjustments to your treatment plan are necessary.

Other Interactions

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) in dogs and cats — staging and management strategies (2015) Chew D A Presentation to the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association 2015 Virginia Veterinary Conference says “Due to varying effects of intestinal phosphate binders to limit absorption of drugs, it is advisable to give other drugs 1 hour before or 3 hours after any intestinal phosphate binder is given.”

The following specific interactions are noted:

  • According to Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook, aluminium hydroxide should be given two hours apart from enrofloxacin (Baytril), an antibiotic. It is probably wise to keep aluminium hydroxide away from antibiotics generally, particularly those in the same family as Baytril (this includes marbofloxacin (Zeniquin).
  • Plumb’s also recommends separating aluminium hydroxide from corticosteroids.
  • Aluminium hydroxide should ideally be given separately from oral ironsupplements because the aluminium hydroxide may reduce the absorption of the iron.
  • Plumb’s Veterinary Drug Handbook also advises giving aluminium hydroxide two hours apart from famotidine (Pepcid AC) because it may interfere with the absorption of the treatment, which would make it less effective. However, RX Med states that “concomitant use of aluminum hydroxide/magnesium hydroxide at commonly used doses, does not influence the pharmacodynamics or bioavailability of Pepcid AC.” I would try to err on the side of caution and still separate famotidine from phosphorus binders and ACE inhibitors if you can, but if this is difficult for you, e.g. because of work commitments, just do the best you can.
  • Aluminium hydroxide binders should be given two hours apart from ACE inhibitors, because the binder may reduce the bioavailability of the ACE inhibitors. Drugs has more information about this.
  • PennState Hershey mentions that vitamin C may interact adversely with products containing aluminium, such as phosphorus binders. Cats do not need vitamin C supplements anyway, because their bodies can manufacture all the Vitamin C they need.

@Suzanne & Darcy THANK U.. 💖💖💖💖🫶🏼.. i just checked tho.. i wonder if too late to give now.. cuz his Zenequin and last snack due soon.. then shot.. give later tonite??… 🥲.. or do tmw?..

Yes. 50 mL is low so you are being very careful.
ok 🥹💖 i squished his little neck and side.. might be some there?? idk.. gonna do tmw to be safe, see if thats just normal..

tysm for all the info.. sorry if it was obvious somewhere.. i appreciate it 💖

ohh thats relieving.. 🥹💖 sigh.. it was suggested to me on the kidney board to just immediately do 1/2-1 tsp.. no work up.. like a fast gradual.. do u think so too?.. my only thing rn is we have some medicines and supplements.. i have to space it all away frm the binder.. 🤡..

yes!! i need to update courses/amounts etc but more or less, everything in the signature… ugh.. all there. im gonna fix it now.. 🫶🏼

I think you misunderstood me. I’ve always been taught to give binders in food or it won’t work. The the two to three hour comment was in reference to separating food with the binder from supplements and medications.

Well you need to separate the zenequin and the binder but you are thinking about the fluids? This is so complicated.
it is right? im sorry about it.. im trying to simplify it.. but idk.. i think so too.. ☹️💖 cuz im trying to follow directions, and the binder interacts w certain things.. and hes on a few things now at the moment.. the biggest is the Zeniquin.. they say on the website not to have the binder and that one come in contact at all.. the instructions on the website are a bit lacking generally.. like they should explain more that it needs to be spread out in the food alloted for the day.. im new to it and now too familiar w binders, so thought could give it in a few snacks and be done.. :/ they just say to add it w food. i just gave the whole thing in one go the first time! :(

meant to send this earlier was tired.. and i just woke up and found him sitting in his box….. had made a pee, but laying down beside it.. idk how long for.. i dont think hes blocked in that instance then..

any ideas???? i got told today the binder can cause constipation…. I skippes fluids today and accidentally forgot his second Miralax.. Could that be why?? :( :( :(

Idk whats going on..

well..
this is what we’re doing rn..

AM, Breakfast, PS - is it ok to use binder w insulin?.. its intravenous but idk..
+1 (can do binder here..)
+2 (can do binder here..)
+3 Miralax
+4 Probiotic
+5 * (last two between these hours)
+6 - 9 (snacks here.. fluids ideally..)
+9.5 -10 or so, last snack + Zenequin
PM, Dinner, PS - maybe can use binder here too?.. tho idk if enough time between Zenequin cuz.. is about 2-2.5 hrs since.. (understand need to wait on binder 3 hrs after a medicine.. Zeniquin especially, all antibiotics..)
+1- 2 maybe can use binder here?
+3 Miralax
+4 - 9 (snacks here.. maybe can use binder?.. a few hours after Miralax? idk..)
+9.5-10, last snack + Cerenia..

Then breakfast.. starts again…

🫤🫶🏼.. gotta go atm.. hoping nugget will eat breakfast. can get some insulin..

@tiffmaxee @Suzanne & Darcy 💘💘❤️‍🩹…. appreciate your attention/help w this so much..

How is he this morning? I don’t like hearing about him lying down in his litter box at all. Since this whole thing with the kidney disease started, was he ever hospitalized and put on IV fluids? I am not making a recommendation, just wondering.

Can you put the MiraLax in his breakfast?

turns out he was able to eat, really happy hes eating well.. drinking. so got his insulin.. now hes resting/sleeping on his heating pad. 🥹🥺

no.. he never was. 🥲 i was given fluids to give him.. and neither do i. 😶 i wonder if it was just muscle weakness.. got tired.. idk.. or something else. maybe the higher glucose numbers are hurting him.. he missed the box a bit yesterday and never does that.. maybe its something like UTI.. i dont think hes blocked cause he just went again and urine is passing.. but not sure. and of course theres no appts available. but ilet receptionist know and theyll prolly fit us in; least get a test so we know its not his parts.. 🥲💘 can run in him another place too if need.. and theres also the ER.. im just watching him.. 👀👀👀 wut think?..
Can you put the MiraLax in his breakfast?
i could.. wut thinking on that? 💘 now i wrote it out.. moving the Zenequin up an hour would give a 3 hour window to dinner.. so he could get binder w dinner?.. that your thinking? then some in +1-2.. (i could try to do the same w breakfast.. move Cerenia up an hour..) then he’d get some Breakfast/Dinner and +1-2 also both AM/PM.. then the middle of the day could be for medicines/supplements.. i guess? the Zenequin is up in 3 days tho.. so that’ll free up opportunities to for adding it also.. or i can just leave that time.. for medicines/supplements.. cuz i do got others to still add.. (😭)..

i am going to call the dratted company and get some advice on this.. cuz no. they need better instructions, esp since a lot of kidney kitties got a bunch of meds they can be on….. 🤡
Yes. No worries there.
great to hear.. 💘 by chance do you wait the 15 min they recommend every meal/snack?…. or just mix it, hydrate it, and go and it's been ok? cuz having to add it and wait 15 min or more EVERY time.. crazy work. 🫤 does it matter how long it hydrates?.. i prep snacks the hour before after the last one is done.. could add it then and prep it.. that might be doable. also wondering if it could be heated.. cuz cold food aint nice sometimes. esp w the weather rn..

I don’t wait. I add the binder to the food, carefully stir it in, and may wait five minutes at most. If she’s really meowing for food, I just give it to her. With the Thriving Pets powder I have never had a problem with my cats eating it. The waiting time is just supposed to eliminate “grittiness” but I have never had any problems. The binder will be effective whether you wait or not.

Yes. If you have to feed anything without binder I would go for the absolute lowest phosphorus food I could find — maybe Weruva Phos Focused.

I didn’t see that in his previous urinalysis. What was the Zenequin prescribed for … just in case he has a kidney infection? How many more days of Zenequin does he have left?
yeah.. no. Zenequin was suggested on the kidney board because frm what they could tell he most likely has an infection.. thats why values jumped as high as they have, from one test especially to the next… and his infection mightve started in August……… 😤 . I just dont know if its in time.. :( (hes got about 3 days more.. (including tonites dose).. and Suzanne his sugar numbers (for him) got him feeling terrible!!!!.. on top of all this.. what do we do? what can i do?.. 😰😰 he greened yesterday.. now back in near 250s..)

this is excellent to know!!! ok… cuz w how many snacks and eatings and all the things we have to do.. we dont need to be waiting for food. :(

so.. i called the company. i learned….. ten thousand things. and i dont have to space anything at all. maybe the antibiotic if i felt inclined.. i can just add it to all things.. and 8.2 is high.. but not panic high. so if i skipped a snack here and there itd be ok. aside frm the medications on the site listed, it doesnt interfere that they know of rn w anything else. and it binds only to phosphorus.. nothing else. the issue w an interactions is that it reduces acid in tummy, affecting how some medicines work.. 😇😇😇 im also start the full dose asap. 😬
