Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini - AMPS 142 - Happy Feb 1st!

Another great cycle for Cini yesterday, and a good starting place today. Where will you take it Cini?

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini - AMPS 142,+2/121 - Happy Feb 1st!

Thanks guys.

Cini is still having these AM/PM PS highs. I don't understand how to adjust the dose any more than I have to get him to even out.

I just noticed my bottle of insulin is 6 months old. I'm wondering if I need to replace it? I've been keeping it in the original box and it's padded in there with the insert that comes in the box. Been in the fridge all this time, I put it back as soon as I'm done with it.

I found a Veterinary compounding pharmacy that sells the SoloStar pens and will dispense one cartridge at a time. So if you think it might be a good idea to get a fresh supply I could do that.

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini - AMPS 142,+2/121 - Old Insulin?

Hi Cathy:

What I have observed with bad insulin is that the numbers just start to get wonky and make no sense. Take a look at Gracie's SS starting about 11/30. For no apparent reason, she just loses her good numbers. I changed her pen and she just never got any better. The pen I changed to had bubbles in it (which I had been told by the pharm was ok). I started a new pen on 12/22 and look at the difference. I had problems with every pen in that pack.....the manufacturer replaced the entire pack for me and we just started the new pack.

Are you feeding late in the cycle? Sometimes that can give a high PS. Conversely, for some reason, if a kitty is on a very low dose and we suspect the pancreas is working, is green most of the time but has higher PSs, and looks like they might be headed for you know where, if they aren't getting a +8 or +9 snack, sometimes we have you throw one in to get the pancreas to see if it will kick in.

One other thing...I saw on Terra's condo how you posted Cini's stalling numbers. Good idea but one thing I would just suggest changing is that instead of the actual time (9:30 pm), I'd put the hours since the last shot since we are all in different time zones. So if 9:30 was his +13.5, I'd change it to that. Does that make sense? That is a lot more clear for us.

Thanks, Cathy. Have a great day!

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini - AMPS 142,+2/121 - Old Insulin?

Hey Marjorie,

I saw your response on Karen's thread and no problem on changing my spreadsheet. I mainly had the times in there to help me keep track that night because I loosing my grip on what I did when @-) I updated my SS now so it looks neater :-D

Let me know if you see anything else that needs cleaning up, Lord knows I'm not a good "housekeeper" at times and tend to just let it build up and then do a giant spring cleaning.

So you don't think the insulin is too old? I thought it was good practice to replace it every 6 months?

Oh, and for feeding, no I feed early in the cycle and I try to be diligent about picking up the food at least 2 and a half hours before the AM/PM PS.

Food routine is usually after AM/PM PS, +2, +4, +6, +9.5

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini - AMPS 142,+2/121,+4.5/74 - Old Insulin?

The issue with your insulin isn't based so much on the number of months but on how well it's working. If you read what Sanofi (the Lantus manufacturer) suggests, you'd replace every 28 days. I tend to replace Gabby's insulin close to that cut off. Lantus has been known to last for far longer than the 28 days when it's handled properly. With the dose the Cini's on, it's likely that you could get 6 mos from a pen. Most of us don't get that long.

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini -AMPS 142,+2/121,+4.5/74,+7/98- Old Insu

Cathy...you're using a vial not a pen right? I do believe the vials are supposed to last longer.

So he's already getting a late cycle snack....then you could try removing it and see what happens. Like I said, for most kitties a late cycle snack slows down the insulin and the PS is higher. But if kitty is about to go OTJ, sometimes the late snack helps. Of course....something in the back of my mind tells me this was discussed before and we had you add the late snack? Don't remember...sorry!!! But try taking it away (if he's not too hungry) and see what it does. You can always add it back.

Re: 2/1 - Cini Mini -AMPS 142,+2/121,+4.5/74,+7/98- Old Insu

Hi Marjorie,

Yes, it's a vial not a pen.

I have to feed Cini at +9 or +9.5 because if I don't he won't last till PS. He starts to get kookie and lick everything. Like right now, when he gets hungry, he's developed this habit of crawling under my desk and licking the surge protector. And anything plastic he licks. The blinds, the flowerpots, the cat litter boxes. I had to stop using litter pan liners, especially now with his throat condition, because he'll eat them. And forget having a plastic bag anywhere in the house. He'll poop Wal-Mart blue for days! It's to the point of obsession!
