It has finally arrived!!! It has come in pens which we aren't used to so I'm going to have to look up how to use them, but YAYAYAYAY! The specialist wants us to start him at 3 units. What should we actually start him at?

Mo has been a bit slow today. I feel so bad for giving his bupe dose late yesterday, I think that's what has thrown him all off. He was doing so well too :( Oh well, we are still very new to this. Just want him to feel better soon so we can plump him up again!

I will look into getting his meds at a pharmacy instead of through the vet. Time to do some research!

Yay!
I don’t give advice on dosing but yesterday @Wendy&Neko said it could be possible to go to 70% of the max Lantus dose you gave....but you will have to go back to testing at both preshots, and ideally at least one other test per cycle. Did you have a think about that?

Yeah, we will have to go back to testing, I completely agree with that. I will start at the very least, going back to preshot testing. Will see if his mood improves on Levemir :)

As we know, the "specialist" is useless.

If you can get the 4 preshots plus a couple others each cycle, I'd say 6.5 units. Otherwise I'd back it off. Some cats react strongly to the switch, so it's really important to be able to test, possibly a bit more, for the first couple cycles. You have to do more than just preshot tests. What can you realistically commit to?

It's always better to stay ahead of pain - I hope you can find a solution that's economical for Mo.

Woo hoo!! I'm so glad the Levimir has finally arrived! All the best with the transition, Katy! How exciting.

I'm sad that Mo is not himself though. Sending feel better vines to Mo today.

I'm glad you got the Levemir. You can draw insulin from the pens from the rubber stopper after you pull the cap off. Make sure you don't inject anything back into the pen.

Gah I wish I had seen the information on using the pen! I'm pretty sure I did a fur shot this evening because the needle of the pen is SO MUCH SMALLER than I'm used to. UGHHHHHHH. Maybe we should just stick with using our normal needles and draw the insulin from the pen that way? Super annoying :( I'm sure I got some in but there were still drops coming out of the pen when I pulled it out of his skin.

Tim and I need to discuss the testing situation tonight. We've only just gotten Mo to come back to us for cuddles and we worry that going back to aggressive testing will reverse this. I 100% understand why testing is SO SO important. I think we will only be able to manage maximum of 3x per day pending his aggression. Tim had to hold him down when I was injecting him tonight, then afterwards Mo looked at us like "where is the ouchie?" Already, there was no sting! YAY! Hopefully in the next few days we notice a change in his aggression.

Please try to give him his pain meds. His condition is supposed to be one of the worst pains a person or animal can have. His aggressive behavior could be related to being in pain. I know you said the pain meds are expensive where you live but his condition is only temporary. The sooner he gets the pain under control, the sooner he will get better. Pain can also raise his BG. I sympathize with you, I really do, but the faster his pain is under control, the faster he will get better.

Oh I 100% will not be stopping his pain meds before he's ready. We will get the pain meds for him one way or an other :)

I know you will. You are an excellent mom to Mo. He is lucky to have you. I just know that Phoenix didn't start getting better until we got the pain under control. Sometimes he would get real nasty and growl if I just walked past him. He was out of his mind with pain. Now, I can prick his ear and give his shots with no problem. He is a real sweetie. Mo will get past this and get better. Just hang in there !

Yes. I use regular syringes to draw my insulin (Lantus) out of my pens. I just have to remember (after using a vial for so long... which I'm also just fine with and don't care either way ... a friend gave me these pens so they were free :-) ... anyway.... I have to remember not to shoot air into the pen! Good luck!

Katy, I'm sorry I don't know this, but is his pain from pancreatitis? I saw that in your signature so I was assuming that's what the problem is.

So glad you've gotten the Lev pens! I see from the previous comments that you have info on how much and how to draw the insulin from the pen (through the little sponge on the end). We use the pens too...

Best of luck with the Lev and I hope Mo settles in and starts to feel better soon :)
