Update: Cytology came back and he has a mast cell tumor. I am furious because I have worked so hard on his diabetes, kidney disease and making sure his chronic pancreatitis was taken care of. In January 2020, the vet indicated that he had a lump in the neck. He would scratch it a lot. She did mention that we could do further tests, but never insisted as she did with the dental or CKD. I really thought that it was not a concern. I looked back into my inbox and I have not received any info re: possible cancer. I did tell her that I would not want to put him again under anesthesia but there are things we say before a diagnostic is given and things we go when we face adversity. In may 2020, I sent an email saying that the mass was larger and that it seemed very itchy but I do not recall any concerns being brought up. She acknowledged that she should have pushed more. I feel extremely guilty to not have done tests. When he got his dental, the dentist said it was benign so again, I did not think this was a major concern. I am heartbroken. Although this cancer is normally local, it seems to be spreading at a fast pace - he has water retention which may indicate that its in the lymph nodes, he has lost muscles. He meows differently- wondering if because he is trapped in his body, not being able to jump or because he is trying to tell me something. He has a great appetite, drinks and still walks but cannot jump.
I was hoping that the antibiotics could have helped but the tumor is still big and the legs swollen. I just feel like I will not be able to forgive myself because it could have been potentially prevented and he will die shortly.

Also, I do not know what to do re: next steps. My parents said I should stop spending money but I honestly do not care about their opinion. I have no idea what can be done but the vet did mention she was v concerned.
I booked an appointment with the oncologist, not knowing what this could lead to.

Any recommendation as to what can be done at this point? Should I go see an oncologist even though this is too late? And please...do not listen to vets when they say your cats tumor is benign - check further. Do not make that same mistake!

Oh Marj! I am so very sorry to hear this devastating news. Please don't blame yourself. Of course we have to trust what our vets tell us. From what little I know, the majority of mast cell tumors are benign, but a fine needle biopsy is the only way to be 100% certain that it's cancerous.

Sending positive healing vines your way and big hugs.

This is NOT your fault. Was the diagnosis from a needle aspirate? I’m crushed for you. How far in advance is the oncologist appointment? If anything can be done it sounds like time is crucial here My advice is to do what you need to do to get all your questions answered. Do not blame yourself. You have been the best cat mom to Djoko he could have ever wished for. :bighug:

They did the needle aspiration and it is cancer.

I could have an appointment 2 hrs away - involves asking new bf to drive there (no driver licence here) ... I am tempted to do it. I have booked the appointment in case.

if bf cannot go, I also booked a train tix and Djoko is allowed to come. Not ideal but what can we do..

I figured as much when you said cytology. I fear it could also be splenic or intestinal from your description. I’m so sorry. :bighug:.:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
I know. I am wondering if it has spread because it has been there so long or just because Djoko was unlucky. Still wondering why dentist specialist said it was benign...I can tell he is of.. He sleeps in weird spots..poor love

I'm am so sorry for everything your boy and you are going through. I understand the anger. I felt something similar when my kitty was diagnosed with the IBD/Lymphoma after months of trying to contain her diabetes. And then, neither of my vets wanted to treat these new diseases. WHY? I still have so much anger as I feel you do too. I think you must do what you have to to get the answers you need. It may be too late but I don't want you to have any regrets- not that you have anything to regret. You have obviously done everything you could to help your kitty. I am praying for your boy and for you. Such a sad, sad situation.

Oh, Marj. I am so sorry. This is devastating. I would go for the oncologist consult to find out what can be done. If I didn't, I don't know if I could live with myself. Right now, you don't know. Maybe he can be treated and still have good quality of life. Don't worry about what other people say - even family who may mean well in their own way, but the don't really understand. He is your cat and it's your business.

I agree that time is of the essence.

Djoko and you will have my prayers.

I have some really good friends, cat owners themselves, who told me that there are "options" when I found out that Ruby had cancer. I still love those friends but didn't listen to them, obviously. Medicine has made huge advances in the last 10 years with regard to diseases that strike older cats and dogs. Situations that seemed hopeless years ago are no longer so. I hope the oncologist you are seeing is a good one and can put your mind at some ease. :bighug:

Yes. Radiation or chemotherapy might be an option if surgery is out. :bighug: That’s why you need a consult with an oncologist.

An appointment with an oncologist will give you answers and help you with any decisions you need to make. :bighug: My current kitty has been living with cancer (same type as Ruby) for three and a half years now.
Was he treated? I will create a new thread.
