I hope the lab results are good, but in the meantime it is always nice to see interest in food again. Hope she's feeling better soon and you can stop worrying, too!

The labs are back. Gabby's kidney function has markedly declined. The vet is coming over to show me how to administer sub-q fluids and we'll start Gabby on a lower phos diet -- probably adding a phos binder to her food. It's possible that there's an underlying kidney infection so we'll try to get a urine sample. The last vet visits, Gabby didn't have a full bladder so that needs to be ruled out.

Sienne, as I said before, our vet--who is very good--said my little dog had maybe months to live and Emmett lived three years with kidney failure. It never really worsened and it wasn't what got him in the end. So, think positive thoughts! Sending many vines and a virtual hug today for you, although feel free to share that with Gabby.

We tuck Hyde's Phosphorous binder capsule in her food and she eats it up. Hopefully Gabby will cooperate likewise, if you have to go this route!

I'm so sorry...but Gabby has an awesome bean who is on top of things. Fluids can make a huge difference, as can getting her BP controlled. In fact, when Trix was first diagnosed with CRF, getting her BP down improved her kidney values from Stage IV to Stage III. For her, she gets a combination of amlodipine (I know that didn't agree with Gabby) and benazepril. For her binder, I use Bock Labs ConSeal AIH rather than the powdered binder - Trix definitely eats much better with the ConSeal than she did with the powder. Also, I religiously give her 5mg Pepcid BID and cerenia every 24-36 hours no matter what (I follow a tight insulin-like dosing schedule with these meds), to stay ahead of tummy acid and nausea, and to keep her eating. It seems to work well - she's going on almost 2 years now with barely-functioning kidneys with a relatively "normal'/high QOL. She sometimes has minor appy issues, but rarely gets sick or flat out refuses to eat. Of course she does also require plate-holding, but what can ya do?

BTW, at least for now, the best prices I've recently found on fluids is through Valley Vet Supply. I haven't been able to get them locally myself, but I know others have....

With all that said...as backwards as it sounds, I hope it's an infection that can be cleared up with ABs......

I, too, echo the sentiments. Hope it is an infection.:bighug::bighug:
Feel better vines for Gabby!:)

Hi sweet Gabby, silly Gizmo and Sienne! Well this news stinks but she couldn't be in better hands.

BIG HUGS Sienne and headbutts to Gabby and Giz!

and adding our prayers and vines for just an "infection", but whatever the outcome, she has an amazing bean to look after her. Hugs to you both :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Adding to the "infection please" chorus. But whatever, she's got the best care. I've been fluiding a friend's stage 3 going on 4 for a year and a half. Peanute's been stable throughout!

Vines. And more.

Marilyn and Polly

One more vote for infection versus CRF. With several kitties here having compromised kidneys, I can tell you it's not as scary as it sounds - if you can manage FD, you can manage CRF. Hopefully, you won't have to.

Sad to see that, Sienne.
Hope whatever it is, it winds up manageable for a long, long time.

So sorry Gabby's kidney function has declined but there is a lot you can do. I am sure it is a blow none the less.
If you add cooked mashed egg white to her food it will lower the phosphorus but still give excellent protein. I give Sheba one cooked egg white a day mashed throughout her food. I hard boil the eggs then scoop out the yoke and just use the white.

Sending many prayers and vines for Gabby.
I hope and pray that sub-q fluids will make her feel much better.

I greatly appreciate the thoughts and hopes that it's an infection but I suspect at the age of 15, a decline in kidney function isn't unexpected. The speed of the change is concerning which is why the vet is considering the possibility of an infection. The other factor is that she has high blood pressure and I strongly suspect that's effecting her kidney function. She didn't have a good reaction to the first BP med so I'm waiting for a new med to be compounded. Once her BP is better controlled, I'm hoping that her kidney values improve.

The good news is I passed my lesson in giving sub-q fluids. However, Gabby, the kitchen counter, and I were all a bit wet as a result of the process.
