Re: 12/8 Slashy AMPS 314 Syringe question?

I really think the needle length is a personal preference. I used to use 1/2" needles, and I gave a lot more fur shots with the longer needle than with the shorter ones (5/16"). It's easier to push the needle through the tent and out the other side with the longer needle. But other people may have the opposite opinion...so I would suggest you try the shorter needles and see how you like them...make up your own mind.

RIck...some people say the longer needles allow for better absorption but I use the short ones, too, to avoid a fur shot and because I can't imagine putting the entire 1/2" needle into Gracie...she is a tiny girl and is sensitive to the stick but with a 31g, 5/16" needle, she doesn't care. Where did you find 1/2" needles at 31g? I've always been told that the smallest gauge you can get for 1/2" is 29g...very interesting. BTW, someone mentioned to me that the better absorption with the longer needles was, theoretically because the kitty was "chubby".

Marjorie,
I am not sure where half inch came from.. I have been using 8mm, 31 gauge. There was a mistake at the drug store and they had 5/16", 31 gauge ready for me. I held off because I have a few left and thought I would pose the question to the group. Just wondering if folks thought the 8mm was too short to get the insulin in there. Been doing this for a long time and am trying to avoid getting into ruts.

Thank you for your input!

You may want to post over on Health, as well.

If I recall, some of the people who have long hair cats prefer the 1/2 inch needles. Often, there's a lot of fur to get through and the longer needles do a better job.
