Member Since 2014
He was 50 this morning and he didn't get a 11am snack.
I am starting to worry if something else could be wrong with him.
How normal is it for a cat in early stages of remission to get that low?
It seems like his body is either producing too much insulin or it's somehow not regulating it right?

How is Obie acting? Is he eating, playing, being social? How are his litter box habits and his water consumption? I don't have any answers for you, but maybe some others have an idea about Obie's BG readings. Any information you can provide will certainly help!

He is hungry and acting normal. I didn't know if there is any precedence for a cat to naturally be that low after being without insulin for about a week.

Holy moly! I'm sure that 36 gave your heart a little shock. From what I recall, some cats are just that low sometimes.

It sure did. I gave him a little syrup hidden in a treat to boot him up a little.
I am going to get another reading during his evening snack.

Amy's got good questions - can you update us on how he's behaving?

I've just now checked spreadsheets for 3 cats that are OTJ and I don't see any numbers below 50 and only one in the 50's. That doesn't say that it couldn't be ok, but at least on those there isn't anything that low. A while ago, I checked a friend's cat locally that was in the low 40's - not diabetic but they were concerned. I also just looked at punkin's lab tab on the ss, and it shows the normal glucose reference range as 70-150 but that would be using an AT equivalent. I suspect that would be equivalent to something over 40 on a human glucometer.

That seems pretty low to me, and although we typically don't think of a cat not getting insulin as being able to become hypoglycemic, there are some unusual medical conditions that can cause low blood sugar. We used to have a member whose cat had a special condition and the cat did have a hypo while not on insulin. I think i'd give a call to your vet, but make sure before they panic at the 34, that you remind them it's on a human glucometer. If you still have good strips on your AT you might test with that first.

ah, i see you updated while i was researching & typing.

I think i'd still give a call to your vet. I'm not sure about carbing him very much. i'd call the vet for advice about that.

Shelly's Jersey occasionally tests in the high 30's and she's been OTJ a while now. I think she got HC during her trial too.

From what I've read in other condos, you don't have to worry so much about low numbers if they have been off insulin. Some cats are just naturally low. If Obie is acting normally, I wouldn't really worry. Just keep an eye on him and make sure he keeps acting normal.

I do remember Devon's Mocha getting pretty low at times, too...I don't know if she hits the 30s, but I vaguely recall at least some low 40s....

I'll do all of that.
Obie eats in another 40 minutes. I'm going to break out the Alphatrak 2 and see where it says he's at.

I'm scanning those ss - i just spotted a 39 on Mocha's. Quite a few in the 40's and 50's. Mocha

I see a 31 and a retest with a 32 for Jersey. In fact, she has quite a few 30's.

So maybe nothing to worry about. If you see any behavioral issues, I'd phone the vet asap, however.

That makes me feel a bit better, Julie.
He is going in for a check up real soon anyways.
He hasn't been to his vet since he was diagnosed.
I will watch him closely.

I guess another thing I need to keep in mind is that since I'm not giving him insulin that he doesn't really have a AM/PMPS time.
Also, before those low numbers that Obie hadn't ate in almost 9 hours. At night he might go 8 hours without eating but usually it's 5-6 hours.
I guess I might need to give him a treat to keep his stomach busy before I leave. The snack would be 2 hours after his morning slopping.

The OTJ trial instructions suggest feeding several small meals throughout the day, so that might help him. Even though you don't have a PS anymore, it's still good to compare the pre-meal times.

i'd go for at least 4 meals somewhat evenly spaced throughout a day to help even out his blood sugar and reduce the burden of a big meal on his pancreas.

I don't think you have to worry about the 37. Besides Mocha and Jersey, we also had a kitty named Tuffy who liked to be in the 20s and 30s when she was on insulin and the 30s once she was off.

Next time, just give him some LC food.
