Garland is getting sick again. I only have had 3 of the strips left for my ketone meter, and given how expensive they are, I've been urine testing. Last one 2 days ago was negative. Since the fur shot yesterday, and her recent high numbers, AND she's been really out of it today, I did a meter check 5.7  Normal is below 0.6

She's hardly eaten today and threw up right after I gave her her pm shot. It's a new pen tonight. The old pen only had a few drops left, but I wonder if the insulin had gone bad the last couple days bc her numbers have been so bad. It was opened Nov 6, but it's the one my hubby got bubbles in. Maybe it got contaminated ?

Yesterday she seemed fine. I've only noticed this change today.

I do. The bag isn't connected to the tube like the one the vet gave me. How do I do that? Should I be worried about the throw up? Did her pm shot cause that?

I doubt that vomiting is related to insulin. However, you might want to give some Pepsid and see if you can get Garland to eat. Do you have any baby food (the kind that's just protein and broth -- Gerber Stage 2 or something similar). It's easy on the tummy.

I don't know anything about how to administer fluids. Is there anyone that was giving you info on this?

For the fluids, just remove the tab at the bottom of the bag and remove the cover off the spike end of the tubing. Insert the spike in the end of the IV bag, turn it upright and squeeze the chamber till it fills halfway with fluid. Remove the end cap of the tubing, attach the needle and remove the needle cap, then open the roller on the tubing to let all the bubbles out. Close off the tubing with the roller and put the cap on the needle till you use it. Don't touch any of the ends of the tubing as these are sterile. Hope this makes sense.

I know how to give the fluids, just not how to get the tube connected to the bag. So many were helping . Kim, Marjorie, and others...

Edit- thanks Linda and Laura!!

Wow.....Uhh...... nailbite_smile

Sorry if that's confusing... The video is great - just ignore the vitamins part. Hope Garland feels better after the squids. Ketones are scary.

I haven't given squids for ketones before so i'm not sure. I used to give Oreo 100 cc/ml for dehydration and when his Bg was high.

Claudia emailed me about your post.

Do you have any ondansetron left? I'd give that right away. Fluids will help.

She has to keep the food down though. Can you feed her small amounts every hour even. Syringe feed, finger feed, remember its not the carb content but when dealing with DKA its the calories. Do you have Recovery RS food left you can syringe feed? Wellness Chicken and Wellness Turkey up there but not at the Recovery calorie level.

Any repeats on a past prescription?

I gave 100cc

She's in a funk. Not very vocal, not eating. She was FINE yesterday. It's so discouraging she keeps getting sick. What am I doing wrong? This is the 3rd time in 5 months  The last time she was acting and eating fine, but her ketones were high. Today is very reminiscent of how she was when she got sick that first time. I hope she starts eating soon. That's what's worrying me the most....

Karrie: we must have been posting at the same time. I don't have any O left, but I'll call the pharmacy right when they open in the morning to see if I've got a refill.

I tried offering her different foods, she wasn't interested. She threw up, so I'm gonna wait another hour for her tummy to settle before I attempt force feeding. I'm so upset about this. It came out of nowhere

(((((violet)))))

sending feel better vibes to garland. you do such a fantastic job of taking care of her . . . no one could do better than you, violet. hugs!

Try the pepcid also - it can't hurt but you should get the ondansetron. I'm not sure how DKA makes a cat feel or if it helps. Do you have cerenia?
