yesterday's condo

Yesterday, after Jude's dental, we came home, and he didn't want to eat. I didn't think too much of it since he'd just had a dental, and I suspected his mouth was sore, so I gave him some Mirataz to stimulate his appetite, and by shot time, he was eating. He seemed a bit off as the night progressed, so I gave him some gaba, thinking that he might have a sore mouth from the dental. This morning, he was inappetent again and just wasn't himself; I syringe fed him and he ground his teeth while I was doing that, so I assumed he was nauseous. I got enough food in him to give his shot + Ondansetron + gaba. I thought he might start feeling a bit better once the Ondansetron got into his system, but he appeared to be feeling worse through the morning. I decided to take him to the walk-in clinic, since Jude's vet is closed on Saturdays. The vet took Jude's temp, and it was 105. He told me he has some sort of infection. He did no bloodwork--he hardly examined Jude, really. He gave Jude a Metacam injection and sent us away with Onsior (anti-inflammatory) and Doxycycline liquid. I tried to explain to the vet that Jude had had a bad reaction to Clavamox a couple of weeks ago, but he didn't respond. This is kind of how that clinic works--they see volumes of people in this area, and they don't, often, spend much time with their patients. And the vet I saw today is one that goes especially fast and doesn't leave much room for questions. So, I left having no real idea what's wrong with Jude other than he has a fever, and the vet suspects an infection. When I got home, I emailed Jude's regular vet to ask him about the Doxy, and I'm still waiting to hear back.

It's always something.

Sorry to hear that Mary. 105 is a high temperature. Did he give any subq? If not, I would. When my boy had 105.3.they immediately gave him fluids. It will help both bring his temp down as well as make him feel better overall. I'm not saying it's a fix, but it will definitely help.
Jude should be fine on the Doxy. It's a totally different drug than the Clavamox.
Also, I get why you syringe fed. He needs that before the insulin. But the anesthesia typically takes up to 24hrs to leave the system. And his lack of appetite can last 48.
Hope he feels better soon

Are you able to take his temp using rectal thermometer? I agree that is pretty high. If he has recently been under anesthesia, there can be risk of aspiration pneumonia. Also a risk whenever “force feeding”. It is serious and needs strong antibiotic. Chest xray is how to determine. When Minner’s mom got it, she was put on marbofloxacin.

I mention this b/c of the high fever.

Sorry to keep responding, but if there is chance he could have aspiration pneumonia, the doxy won’t work. I don’t want to scare you, I’m just worried. I’m sorry.

It happened to Mama Pip twice, both times after a diagnostic procedure under anesthesia. High fever showed up 24-48 hours later. Something about aspirating her own saliva or mucus while still being semi unconscious or during that time period when coming out of anesthesia.

I very much appreciate the input and advice, Laura. I would have responded sooner, but I had to go buy a new thermometer. I just checked him, and his temp is down to 100.2 (edited to add, I checked him a second time and it's 101.2). I did go ahead and start him on the doxy; 1st dose was 12:30 p.m., so a couple of hours ago. I think it's a good sign that his temp is down, right? Here's the issue: we don't have an ER vet in this area, so I'm on my own unless Jude's vet gets back to me. The vet who performed the dental is not the one who treats Jude's diabetes; he is one we have used a lot in the past and is close by, and for convenience sake and because he was charging a bit less on the dental, we went to him. I've called his vet tech and left a message with her. I do think this is related to the dental; it's too coincidental that he would spike a fever and have an infection the day after.

Oh Mary I’m sorry you have another day of difficulties! You’re asking all the right questions and I hope you get some real answers, Jude responds quickly and feels much better.
Yes, it’s always something 🥲
Sending you many healing vines 🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃🍃
I really hope this is just a quick setback and Jude heals quickly 🥰❤️‍🩹🙏

Awesome news on the temp being down to 100-101 range. That’s totally normal range for cat. Dancing the happy jig. 105 is approaching serious danger so I was scared and pneumonia can do that and doxy won’t help.

Sounds like you are good. I personally think doxy is a great drug for cats as it does good stuff for many things … the mouth and lots of upper respiratory. It also will kill chlamydia in cats, a stealthy pest, altho it takes 6-8 weeks to do it. Yes, Mama Pip had all those things too. Plus its got anti inflammatory properties. I never noticed any gastro side effects at all. The one downfall, we used pills and had to cut in half for right dose. We had to follow thoroughly with 3cc water or be very sure food was eaten after because doxy will cause esophageal ulcers and/or strictures if it gets lodged or dissolves in esophagus vs stomach.

I wanted to mention something that happened to Jude yesterday that was STRANGE. After he came back from his dental, when I tested him, his blood wouldn't form a little bead of blood when I pricked him. Instead, it sort of flowed from the pricked spot, almost like water, like it was thinned. It was so fluid and thin, that I had a difficult time getting it on the test strip. One time I went through four test strips (and four pricks--poor Jude) before I could get the blood to adhere to and soak up into the test strip.

I wonder what caused that? It did it a little bit this morning, too, at the PS, but it finally beaded-up like normal as his +2 test. Could it have been the anesthesia from yesterday thinning his blood???

I’m sorry to see that you and Jude have a day and sorry to read that vet seemed somewhat dismissive and rushed during his appointment. Hope the meds make him feel better soon ❤️‍🩹

If Jude was on fluids yesterday during and a bit after his dental, that could be the cause for the thinning of his blood, unless they gave him meds that can cause blood thinning.

Sending big hugs to you both 🤗 and hopes for calm evening.

Oh no. I'm sorry to read this Mary. I was hoping that after the dental he'll be on the mend and his numbers and eating will improve.
Is it possible there's an infection after the dental. Is it possible for you to look into his mouth see if you see any iflamation? I know it's not easy after he's just had a dental.
Regardless it's good that his temp has come down.
Sending lots of healing vines in the meantime.

Thanks, Karolina. The vet looked inside his mouth today; I don't think he saw anything remarkable--at least he didn't mention it to me. It's possible that some of the bacteria from his mouth got into his bloodstream when they did the cleaning, I suppose. I don't know. He's still feeling poorly  I haven't checked his temp in a few hours (he's been resting, which is something he wasn't able to do earlier, so I've left him alone). I'll check him when I give him his shot. I just hope it hasn't spiked again. If we can just make it through the weekend, I'll get him to his regular vet's on Monday morning.

Thanks, Kat. Yes, that makes perfect sense about his blood being thinned by the fluids--I assume he was on them. I don't remember noticing the thinning back in February when he had his last dental, but it's possible I wasn't paying as close attention.

Hope he feels better tomorrow once the doxy kicks in. I've never given doxy to a cat 🍀🍀 but many times to my dogs and they would often lose their appetite and sometimes get some gastro issue.... probiotic was of course important. :bighug:

@Tyleete, is this the CBD oil you were talking about? CBD Oil Tinctures & Drops for Cats
I can't see the ingredients; I wonder if it has anything sugary in it?
That's it. OK, no making fun of my (lack thereof) nails. We were clearing out my library today so my husband can rip up the carpet and replace it with laminate for my asthmatic kitties. I took pics of my own bottle and the box it comes in.
