12/30 Pumbaa - Up and down like an elevator

Pumbaa's last thread.

Well, Pumbaa earned a dose reduction the night of 12/28. I didn't reduce him the next cycle since he was going into bounce mode. And when I did reduce him, I only dropped him from 2.75U to a fat 2.50U, because I really didn't want to lose momentum.

While he did hit green last night (71 @ +8), I guess that was the shed from the 2.75U talking.

While I am concerned about his prolonged bounce today, he also had a prolonged bounce on 12/21 when he was coming down from the 3.0U dose. He's been active and feisty today, so I'm not too worried, yet. I also baked cookies today, for the first time since Pumbaa was diagnosed. As always, when I am cooking/baking, I made sure that anything that hit the floor (flour, etc.) was cleaned up immediately, and made sure that Pumbaa had no chance to get into the cookie dough or the cookies that were cooling on the counter. He was, quite frankly, disinterested, which was blessing. So I really don't think that my cookie baking had anything to do with his highs today.

I just wish he would stop emulating an elevator/SuperBall and quite the bouncing/dropping. I know, I know, "they bounce until they don't". But it's still my fervent prayer that Pumbaa levels out at some point so I can actually sleep through the night without setting the alarm for middle of the night testing, since I never know when he's going to drop. Last night, for example. Did he go a lot lower than that 71 before the +8 and I missed it? I can't analyze and react if I don't test, and I can't test 24/7, and he doesn't have a carved-in-stone nadir.

I'm just tired and in whining mode, once again. :( I am so thankful that Pumbaa has no other health issues other than the diabetes. I am thankful that I work at home, and can test him more frequently than those of you who work outside the home. I am thankful that Pumbaa doesn't mind the Levemir injections as much as he did the Lantus. I'm thankful for so many things. But I'm still going to whine about those things I don't like and can't change! haha_smiley

Hi Suze

Sounds fun to bake all those yummies!

I think next time he clears, if he doesn't come down onto green, I'd be tempted to take him back up to 2.75u so he doesn't lose momentum.

Congrats on being able to make cookies. It's amazing how many place there are in a kitchen to hide dough or completed cookies. Our microwave gets lots of service, as well as a corner pantry on top of the wok. I can so relate to having to be very careful while cooking.

And on the bouncing, I can SOOOO sympathize, we've been on Lantus since February and still waiting.....

Marje, my house smelled great tonight!

I'm already thinking the same thing. But, at the same time, it took him 16 cycles to drop below 50 at the 2.75U dose. And it took him 8 cycles to go green on that dose (on 12/24). And we already know that 3.0U was too much for him. *sigh* I just wish I didn't have to worry about him diving too low. I may just hitch up my patience pants and wait this out for many cycles. I don't know!

Wendy: Isn't it fun playing "hide the carbs"? I'll never forget one of Mel's cats figuring out how to open the microwave and get at a bowl of spaghetti, and the ensuing high numbers. That cat was determined!

May 2013 bring an end to bounces for both of our kitties!

Hoping that the new dose will help bring his #s down. It could be the 15% carb food that is making him bounce all over the place. I hope that he settles down for you very soon. Have a good day!

Hey Suze, hope he settles down for you soon. Have a HAPPY NEW YEAR's Eve!

Thank you, Angela and Jo!

Angela, I try to only give Pumbaa small amounts of the higher carbed food to either slow down a dive or bring his numbers up a bit. Gee, I hope that isn't what is making him bounce!

Hi Suze,

I never did the "carb the lows" thing with Bob. I was pretty ignorant when he was on the juice, and it was PZI, not Lantus/Lev, and I pretty much just shot the preshots, adjusted accordingly, and fed him the same thing (all low carb) every day. I remember a couple of 40 nadirs that I just gave him an extra snack for, but it was low carb too. So I'm saying this is based on just what I think, not what I did...

I don't think the HC food would cause a real bounce. When cats go low, we tell people to slow the drop, or try to raise the numbers, by giving the kitty HC food or gravy, right? And we do that because it hits the system (the gravy) faster than LC food. But we also tell them that when they see the numbers come up, not to become complacent. Keep testing because the carb boost isn't going to last long, and the numbers can come back down once the HC does the trick. So... while I agree that the HC food, or the HC gravy, is going to boost the numbers up quickly, I also don't think the carb boost is going to stick around. Not any longer than the carb boost from LC food. Maybe it'll raise the numbers more, but I don't get how it would raise them longer, or keep raising them to "bounce-type numbers".

I'm thinking the bounce comes from the lows, and that the bounce from the lows will stick around a lot longer than any boost from any type of food would. I think dry food, which should take longer to digest, would probably keep the numbers up longer and confuse mattters. But not the canned food.

Of course, I could be completely wrong. ;-)

Carl, I totally agree.

Pumbaa is a bouncer even when he doesn't get high carbed food. And the little amounts of high carbed food I give him to try and bring up the lows should not cause these kinds of spikes in numbers. I think the absolute best example of using higher carbed food to slow down drops, and how short term the effects are would be Pumbaa's AM cycle on 12/20.

Angela's post made me stop and think, and your post made me stop and think some more. I'm pretty sure these ugly numbers are just Pumbaa being Pumbaa and bouncing, and lows that I've missed overnight due to a lack of testing. As well as a bounce not clearing. And not due to the small amount of higher carbed food he's been given.

I'm going to go and post a thread for today, but I think I need to bump him up to either 2.75U or a fat 2.75U in the morning. Pumbaa cleared his bounces quicker at 2.75U, and didn't spend this long in the unhealthy numbers. Yes, he earned a dose decrease on PM 12/28, and he's only on his 5th cycle at a FAT 2.50U, but I can't bear to see all of these readings over 300. *sigh*

Hey, It's your New Year's Eve Suze! Relax & enjoy the last night of 2012. You've done a lot of Pumbba, both of you have been great! Sit back, relax & be happy your achievements!
Wish you a better year of 2013!

Helen: (((HUGS))) to you and Rosy and the rest of your family! And a very Happy New Year to you all!

I know, I should be relaxing, and enjoying the night, but I still have lots to do! :)

Just so you know, I am totally appreciating that no one could look at Pumbaa as see that there is anything wrong with him. He looks and acts like the picture of health! And you're right, that is a great achievement! (((HUGS)))
