Thread '12/29-BEAR- AMBG 61- food trial

A busy day in Bear world today! Well probably not for him, I assume his day went a little something like this..
Sleep, beg for more food, fight one or two of his civvies, sleep, play with new toy, meow ferociously for food, more toy, fight, food beggings, sleep under xmas tree.

Back to work for me today, hence no am update! Propped him up a bit during the night.. and again this morning before I left with some mc/lc mix.. i think he is doing better with a bit more support with the mc added to his lc food.

NS again today.. lets see where this goes!

A-ha now I can post what I’ve been waiting all day to post! It is time to make it official 🥳🎉. Here are the OTJ trial instructions for you:
  • Start the trial on the next green pre shot (we did a food trial so let’s give Bear-Bear credit and today we can say is day 3 🐻)
  • If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
  • Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. Please use the “OTJ Trial” dropdown prefix on your subject line every day so we can closely monitor the trial.
  • He may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.
  • After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!
Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Once he is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a visit to the vet!

Good luck with the trial!

OKAY, wow 🥹🥹
So today is day 3 of the 14 day otj?
So no more +8 food test I assume?

Obviously I can test more often if I would like? I want to keep an eye on those limes 👀
I have been bulking him up a bit with more food, higher lc.. especially over night and on work days..
what if this affects the trial? I suppose if he’s ready to be OTJ it shouldn’t 🤷‍♀️
And if he has a bluey then we bring it to the tribunal to see if he gets insulin? Lol

Later feeding isn’t necessary, since we have good indication the pancreas is working. Yes, if you want to test in between, you sure can. Usually people look forward to the pokie break, but given your wonky meter issues at low numbers for peace of mind there isn’t anything wrong with testing in between. Higher LC shouldn’t do much to strain a functioning pancreas, remember some cats actually do better with higher LC.

Depends on the blue, an occasional number between 100-120 isn’t anything to worry about, feed and test in 3-4 hours, if the number goes back into greens it means the pancreas is working.

Yes, I would say day 3 since he’s been green and no depot possibly influencing. Wendy @Wendy&Neko might be slightly more generous and say it’s day 4 :D
