12/30/24 New Member question about Libre

Hello, my name is Nancy and I’m new here, sort of. I’ve been lurking in the shadows reading and gleaning as much info as I can from the posts. My cat Mojo is a semi-feral lovable little monster who doesn’t do well with handheld monitoring, so I’ve been using the Libre 3. I just put one on three days ago, and today I got the error message “Your sensor runs continuous quality checks and it has shut itself down for your safety.” Never got that one before. Ooofta.
So here’s my question: can I apply a new sensor on the same side as the newly broken one just this once? I’m afraid my cat will not tolerate going through the whole shaving process again since he just barely got through it three days ago. His Libre application two weeks ago had me in the ER because his bite was so intense I developed an infection. I just want to put a new one on near the same shaved spot to do it quickly without him getting much time to go berserk. Thank you for your help!

It sounds like Mojo hasn't lost his feral roots! If you've not yet found it, there is a good Facebook group for people who are using the Libre for their diabetic pet. They will have information about the error message. I doubt there's a problem with putting the monitor in the same place. Humans do not tend to move their sensor to different body parts.

When Corky was first diagnosed he used the Libre, I always place it in the same spot, of course you will have to re-shave the area again, The Libre monitor can be replaced, free of charge they are guaranteed, you can call the customer service number on the box. you will need all the number behind the box such as serial number etc, but you cannot say is for your cat or they will not replace it.:bighug::cat::cat:

Hi Nancy, welcome! Happy you found the libre to be helpful for Mojo! I think the error message you get is a new feature of the app. I use the reader so I can just say what I heard from other users. It replaced the "Read again in 10 minutes."-message you get if the blood sugar is changing rapidly. It can also occur, if the sensor is not that tight anymore and while the filament is moving a little bit the sensor gets strange readings. Do you get the error all the time or are there readings in between? Does the graph move? Maybe the sensor is still working.

To answer your question: It is recommended to alternate sites of the sensor, so the skin can recover. How big is the shaved patch? Maybe you can reapply the sensor on the same site but still move it a bit from where the old sensor was? What did you use to apply the sensor? Is it just the adhesive from the sensor or barrier wipes or did you use some kind of glue, which requires hars removel? I think if no glue was used and the skin looks good, it is acceptable to use the same site, maybe moved a little in the shaved spot, once. The old sensor was on just for three days, so I hope the skin is not so stressed.

My cat is also not super excited about the whole process. What I do is to do the process in multiple steps. Shaving one day, applying the other. That makes it a lot easier for me than to do it in just one go.

Sienne already recommended the facebook group freestyle libre for cats and dogs. They have excellent material about the application and removal of the sensor. Unfortunately the group is paused at the moment, so you can't ask questions but you can read all the helpful material. If you have more questions, I am happy to help!

And sorry you had to go to the ER. :( You are a brave cat mom to keep on trying! All the best! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am a member of the FB Libre group. Unfortunately they are on a pause until February. I went ahead and applied it near the same spot, first removing the Skin Tac I used as an adhesive. I hope it works!

I put the new sensor a little to the left of the previous one. I use Skin Tac as an adhesive, so first I removed that with Brava. When I’ve tried Gabapentin with Mojo in the past he became increasingly more violent with each dose (my first vet kept increasing his dose to the point that I felt uncomfortable and then left the vet after she told me the only option I have left is euthanasia). I also tried Xanax and that didn’t work either.
Good to know about the new message. I kept getting my message for about ten hours before I called it quits. The Libre also registered fantastic numbers (which he never gets!) 24 hours prior to the fail. I tested with my ReliOn and it was a 200 point higher difference. That’s when I knew for sure the sensor was not working.
This is all so new and quite stressful for me as I try to help my Mojo get regulated. I also joined the FB Libre group and was saddened to see their pause.

I have had so many replacements from Abbott that I think they surely have red flagged me!

Hi Nancy. Sorry to hear about all the troubles. But It sounds like you did a great job replacing the sensor.
The Skin Tac is actually not an adhesive. It’s just a skin barrier. It helps protect the skin just so you know. I’m glad you joined the Facebook group.
There is so much good information on there and I also saw the message about them being on pause. (I can’t figure out what that’s all about but it’s the first time I’ve seen that happen the two years that I’ve been on that site).

I’m sorry you were bitten by Mojo. Do you have anyone who could help you hold him when you apply the sensor?

Hopefully he will get used to the process and not be as upset in the future.
My Ivy it’s not a terribly tolerant cat either, but somehow she does tolerate me putting a sensor on her. I do rotate from one side and then the other side the next time if possible. I do like to give one side a rest, but since it’s only been three days, it’s probably fine what you just did :)

Your previous vet and her ideas of what you should be doing for your kitty sound just awful and I’m glad to hear you left that practice. Obviously, you are finding there are many more options available to you and Mojo.

If you have more questions, please let us know, we are happy to help :bighug:

I am so sorry this is all so stressful and your vet was not really helpful as well. Good job you applied the sensor yourself! Might be that the last one got loose somehow even though it sounds you did a good job with the skin tak. It can happen. I wish you good luck with the next one. If the skin looks good, I would give it a try. Sometimes we have to do compromises with challenging cats. I know what I am talking about. :cat: All the best and always ask, if you have questions. We have lots of libre users here. I am so glad I could learn from others.

Oh wow I thought Skin Tac was an adhesive this whole time! It’s so sticky to the touch that I thought it helped keep the Libre on. At least that’s what I was told from a Feline Diabetes support group on Facebook. ‍♀️

Thank you! I’m trying to learn everything I can!

I have a spreadsheet from a Feline Diabetes group on Facebook. Can I use that?
@Mojo the Terrible’s Mom

Not really it's different than ours, I'll give you the link
Please use ours

https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/how-to-create-a-spreadsheet.241706/

If you are feeding any kibble you need to follow the SLGS method for Lantus , please add that to your signature and spreadsheet when you set our spreadsheet up

Here is the link about the dosing methods for you to read about
They will tell you when an increase or decrease is needed. You can always post and ask if you're not sure

I think I’m missing the dosing link?

I think I am setting up the spreadsheet correctly. Do you mind taking a look before I start putting in my data? Also, how far back should I go? I have Libre numbers since October 2024. Thanks!

Do I need to put every hour? I do check his Libre every hour (kind of obsessed) but am not sure if you need that much detail. Happy to do it if it helps.
No you don’t need to put every hour if you don’t want to.
(I do put every hour on my spreadsheet, it helps me at a glance to see what’s going on, but it’s up to you)

I can only see today’s data on your spreadsheet.
Have you made it visible to everyone?
